Paolo Segneri y la oratoria sagrada en España.

Abstract

En este trabajo, tras señalar la importancia que han adquirido en los últimos años los estudios literarios sobre la oratoria sagrada en España y teniendo presente la relevancia de la preceptiva retórica en este género, se analiza en primer lugar su situación en nuestro país a finales del siglo XVII cuando se empieza a traducir la obra del predicador más importante del siglo, el jesuita italiano Paolo Segneri (1624-1694), conocido por su discurso acalorado y por su elocuencia, a veces polémica e impetuosa, orientada a enseñar, deleitar o persuadir a sus oyentes. Del mismo modo, se constata también que la labor traductora de la mayor parte de sus textos se va a continuar durante todo el siglo XVIII y se prolongará, aunque en menor medida, en el siglo XIX, evidenciándose así la enorme difusión en España de un autor considerado el máximo exponente del clasicismo lingüístico italiano, contrario, por tanto, al gusto pretencioso y excesivamente conceptista de la elocuencia barroca.

After identifying the momentum gained in recent years in literary studies regarding the Sacred rhetoric in Spain, and in view of the relevance of the precepts of this particular genre, its situation in our country at the end of the 17th century is hereby analyzed. It is then that the works of Paolo Segneri (1624 - 1694), the most important preacher of the century, start to be translated. Known for his passionate and eloquent speech, sometimes controversial and unruly - yet educational and moving - he usually succeeded at persuading his readers. Likewise, it is also established that the translating endeavor in most of his works continues through the 18th and most of the 19th centuries. This shows the broad dissemination in Spain that an author considered as the epitome of Italian linguistic classicism had, in spite of the pretentious and perhaps too conceptual taste of the baroque eloquence.
