Léxico de los fragmentos papiráceos de novela griega

Abstract

Esta tesis doctoral tiene como objetivo central el estudio del léxico de los fragmentos papiráceos de novela griega, aunque va más allá porque, partiendo del tratamiento lexicográfico de palabras y contextos, estudia numerosas cuestiones literarias e interpretativas que afectan a estos textos, e intenta también hacer aportaciones a los problemas de definición genérica de la novela griega en general y de estos fragmentos en particular. El estudio, presentado en formato de léxico, recopila la totalidad de los vocablos griegos atestiguados en los papiros de novelas fragmentarias. Estos términos son traducidos al castellano y al inglés, y aparecen acompañados de indicaciones de uso, de contextos con su traducción. Se añaden comentarios sobre cuestiones de crítica textual, fonética, morfología y sintaxis, así como interpretaciones y paralelos literarios. El corpus de textos se basa en la edición reciente de Stephens y Winkler (1995), Ancient Greek Novels: The Fragments, a los que se suman aquellos papiros que pueden atribuirse con total o casi total seguridad a la novela griega y que han sido publicados desde entonces: POxy.4760, 4761, 4762, 4811, 4945, 5262, 5263, 5264, 5354, 5355, 5356. El léxico se ha elaborado a partir de un índice propio de los textos, contrastado a su vez con los índices de las ediciones de referencia. Los contextos se basan en la edición de López Martínez (1998) Fragmentos papiráceos de novela griega, por ser la más reciente y la única que hasta la fecha presenta un aparato crítico positivo. Esta edición ha sido contrastada de forma sistemática con la de Stephens y Winkler (1995) para señalar las diferencias textuales. A su vez, las citas remiten a ambas ediciones, con la finalidad de que el léxico resulte de utilidad independientemente de la edición consultada. También se ha comparado el texto de López Martínez (1998) con otras ediciones, anteriores y posteriores, procedentes de recopilaciones o de ediciones independientes, frecuentemente acompañadas de comentarios. En algunos casos he examinado personalmente los propios papiros, durante mis estancias en la Universidad de Oxford; en otros, he revisado las fotografías disponibles en bases de datos y repositorios en línea. Para la presentación formal del léxico se ha tomado como modelo el Diccionario Griego-Español (DGE). Igualmente sigue, como este, una organización de los artículos jerarquizada, se ajusta a las convenciones adaptadas por este diccionario y se sirve de sus listas de abreviaturas. Al tratarse de un léxico especializado, resultan de particular interés los comentarios que se agregan a los lemas para explicar problemas de crítica textual, introducir precisiones sobre el contexto del papiro e indagar sobre otras posibles interpretaciones que ofrecen los términos, al compararlos con el uso que tienen en las novelas conservadas completas o en autores contemporáneos. En la última parte, denominada Notablia Lexicographica, han sido estudiados los términos más relevantes. Así, se han comentado en detalle los hapax legomena, es decir, aquellas palabras que no se atestiguan en fuentes literarias ni documentales de las que tengamos constancia, sino únicamente en los fragmentos papiráceos de novela griega. Se han recogido, a su vez, todos los vocablos ausentes de las novelas conservadas completas, pero presentes en los papiros de novelas fragmentarias. Han resultado de especial interés los nombres personales, al ser un gran número de ellos hapax legomena y, en su mayor parte, nombres ficticios o nombres parlantes. Además, se ha indagado sobre la posibilidad de realizar una clasificación tipológica de los fragmentos papiráceos de novela griega, analizando el estatus social de los personajes. Finalmente, se han incorporado listas de teónimos, topónimos y gentilicios.

Abstract The main objective of this doctoral thesis is the analysis of the lexicon of the papyrus fragments of Greek novels. It goes beyond that, however, since, by having the basis of the lexicographical treatment of words and contexts, it addresses numerous literary and interpretative questions that affect these texts, and it also intends to contribute to the problems of the generic definition of the Greek novel in general and of these fragments in particular. The study, presented in the form of lexicon, compiles the totality of Greek words attested in the papyri of fragmentary novels. These terms are translated into Spanish and English, and are coupled with usage indications, with contexts and their translation. Commentaries are added concerning problems of textual criticism, phonetics, morphology and syntax, as well as interpretations and literary parallels. The corpus of texts is based on the recent edition of Stephens and Winkler (1995), Ancient Greek Novels: The Fragments, in addition to those papyri that can be assigned most certainly or quite certainly to the Greek novel and that have been published since then: POxy.4760, 4761, 4762, 4811, 4945, 5262, 5263, 5264, 5354, 5355, 5356. The lexicon has been written from an individually prepared index, which has been compared to the indexes of the reference editions. The contexts are based on the edition of López Martínez (1998), for being the latest and the only so far that presents a positive apparatus criticus. This edition has been systematically compared to the one of Stephens and Winkler (1995) to indicate the textual differences. Besides, the quotes refer to both editions, so that the lexicon shall be helpful regardless of the edition one might be using. Also, other previous or later editions have been compared to the text of López Martínez (1998), coming from compilations or independent editions, frequently with commentaries. In some cases, I have personally examined the papyri themselves, during my research stays at the University of Oxford; in others, I have revised the available images at databases and other online repositories. For the formal presentation of the lexicon, I have taken the Greek-Spanish Dictionary (DGE) as reference. As such, it follows a hierarchical organization of the articles, it is adjusted to the conventions adapted in this dictionary and it uses its abbreviation lists. Being a specialised lexicon, the commentaries, which are added to the lemmas, are of particular interest to explain problems of textual criticism, to introduce precisions about the context of the papyrus and to analyse other possible interpretations the terms might have when compared to their usage in the extant novels or in contemporaneous authors. In the last section, called Notablia Lexicographica, I have studied the most relevant terms. As such, I have commented in detail the hapax legomena, that is, those words that are not attested in literary nor documentary sources that we know of, but only in the papyrus fragments of Greek novels. Furthermore, all words absent from the extant novels but attested in the papyri of fragmentary novels have been compiled. Of special interest turned out to be the personal names, being a great amount of them hapax legomena and, mostly, fictitious names or speaking names. Moreover, the possibility of presenting a typlological classification of the papyrus fragments of Greek novels has been investigated, analysing the social status of the characters. Eventually, lists of theonyms, toponyms and ethnonyms have been included.
