La Ley de Gresham y el efecto del tiempo de circulación en las monedas de 5 pesetas de plata (1870-1899)

Abstract

En este artículo se analizan los datos de 344 ejemplares de 5 pesetas del Gobierno Provisional, Amadeo I, Alfonso XII y Alfonso XIII. Se cuenta con 138 ejemplares que cuentan con todos los números de sus estrellas visibles y 206 ejemplares con ninguna o parte de las cifras de sus est rellas visibles, como una aproximación objetiva a la graduación de la conservación de las monedas. Se calcula el peso medio y el cumplimiento del decreto de Reforma del sistema monetario español, del 19 de octubre de 1868, acerca de la retirada de circulac ión de monedas con un alto desgaste. Se lleva a cabo el análisis para esta moneda de inversión tanto de forma global como distinguiendo tipos y grados de conservación. Se muestra como los ejemplares más antiguos tienen menor peso y cómo las monedas llegada s a la actualidad siguen la Ley de Gresham.

We analyze the data of 344 specimens of 5 peseta from the periods of Provisional Government, A madeo I, Alfonso XII and Alfonso XIII. There are 138 units with all the numbers of their stars distinguishable at a glance and 206 units with none or part of the figures in their stars recognizable. We use this as an objective approximation to the coins’ g rade. We compute the average weight of the different types and check if they fulfill the criterium about the withdrawal of worn coins set out by the decree of Reformation of the Spanish monetary system, of 19 of October of 1868. The analysis for these coin s is carried out both altogether and distinguishing type and grade. It is shown how the older coins have a lower weight and the ones that have survived until today follow Gresham’s Law
