Tomás de Aquino : comentario a Metafísica VI y IX. Texto bilingüe, estudio preliminar y notas

Abstract

Objetivos y Resultados Con esta tesis se pretende presentar al público español en formato bilingüe los comentarios de Tomás de Aquino a los dos mencionados libros de la Metafísica de Aristóteles, el VI y el IX. Se trata, por supuesto, de dotar al texto de una introducción histórica (autenticidad, cronología, fuentes…) y filosófica y, además, de un aparato crítico solvente para utilizarla como texto de estudio y trabajo filosóficos. Se trata, pues, de otorgar un texto bilingüe con un amplio aparato crítico y un estudio previo en el que se discutirán las principales cuestiones planteadas en la obra estudiada. El enfoque no es, pues, lingüístico o filológico, ni desde los problemas de la traducción, sino preparar una edición para profesionales de la filosofía. Esto no obsta, para que los términos filosóficos sean discutidos y expuestos, no sólo en su contenido doctrinal, sino también en su contenido semántico y en sus posibilidades hermenéuticas. En definitiva, se intenta ofrecer un instrumento filológico –una traducción castellana–, justificada y fiel al contenido filosófico, puesto que mantenemos la intención de poner el texto al alcance del estudio filosófico del mundo hispano. De este modo, el presente proyecto pretende cubrir una laguna en lengua española de un autor muy importante. Se aspira a aportar una traducción estable y una documentación suficiente que permita el estudio de los textos que nos ocupan, ofreciendo no sólo la traducción sino una versión del texto original que facilite cotejar y discutir el sentido semántico y filosófico de su contenido. En suma, el objetivo general es producir una edición científica, estable y fiel de los textos propuestos. Además, se pretende desarrollar, como hemos dicho, el núcleo teórico de la interpretación de Tomás de Aquino a la obra aristotélica en general y a la Metafísica en particular. Se trata, en fin, de aportar una herramienta de trabajo filosófica que nos ayude a comprender mejor la visión que Tomás de Aquino tuvo de la Metafísica de Aristóteles. Metodología La metodología viene exigida por el tipo de trabajo que se ha realizado. Se trata de un acceso directo al texto original de Tomás de Aquino, con la finalidad de comprenderlo, traducirlo y discutirlo críticamente. La base es, pues, la edición crítica del Comentario de Tomás a la Metafísica. Sin embargo, aunque pueda parecer increíble, no existe ninguna edición crítica de esa obra. No obstante, tenemos una edición que podríamos calificar de científica, pues tiene la suficiente calidad para acceder satisfactoriamente al texto que salió de la pluma –mejor de la boca, pues fue dictado– de Tomás de Aquino. Por esto, no sólo se ha tenido en cuenta la edición de M.-R. Cathala, que es la que podemos llamar científica, sobre todo tras la correcciones cuidadosísimas de Raymundus Spiazzi, editada por la casa Marietti, sino también otras ediciones, al menos la Vivès, Parma y Alarcón, cuyos textos han sido confrontado para detectar posibles variantes. En cuanto a la traducción, se ha tenido en cuenta la tradición española para la traducción de los términos filosóficos empleados en la metafísica, sin que eso obste para que discutamos la validez y exactitud de las versiones propuestas y, si es el caso, avancemos justificadamente nuevas traducciones. El problema de la fijación en español de un vocabulario metafísico se hace especialmente grave en el caso de la traducción de Aristóteles. Nuestra tesis no se centra en la traducción del texto aristotélico, no obstante, pensamos que debemos darlo al lector, junto con la versión latina que manejó Tomás de Aquino, para poder hacer más inteligible la exposición tomista. Nuestra versión del texto aristotélico ha sido la de Moerbeke, pero no tal como ha sido editada por García Yebra, puesto que éste ha introducido abundantes variaciones, desconocidas por Tomás de Aquino, que dificultan conocer lo que Tomás tenía ante los ojos cuando comentaba a Aristóteles. A partir de esa versión de Moerbeke hemos dado la versión española, para que el lector pueda saber qué es lo que Tomás estaba comentado. En general, se ha mantenido la estructura de la edición de Marietti, conservando el estilo, la numeración y los esquemas que introdujeron sus curadores. Sin embargo, nos hemos alejado de ella en aras de la comprensión y la cohesión filosófica, indicándolo en el aparato crítico. En cuanto a la introducción y comentario, la metodología ha ido destinada a incardinar la obra en su contexto, intentando desarrollar los puntos más interesantes a la luz de la tradición filosófica continental. No se trata de aportar una nueva interpretación del texto, sino de reconstruir su significado original y hacerlo accesible a los lectores y estudiosos españoles. Para ello nos apoyaremos en las interpretaciones de autores contemporáneos de la tradición Aristotélico-tomista como Enrico Berti, James Weisheipl, Jean Pierre Torrell o Jesús García López. También se han tenido en cuenta para la aproximación metodológica los trabajos realizados por el Grupo de Investigación Noesis de la Universidad de Murcia.

Objectives and Results This thesis is intended to present to the Spanish public in a bilingual format the comments of Thomas Aquinas on the VI and the IX books of Aristotle's Metaphysics. We would like, to provide the text itself with an historical introduction (authenticity, chronology, sources ...). And also a solvent critical apparatus to use as a text of study and philosophical work. It is intended, therefore, to grant a bilingual text with a broad critical apparatus and a previous study in which the main issues raised are discussed. The focus is not, therefore, linguistic or philological, but to prepare an edition useful for professionals of philosophy. Philosophical terms are discussed and exposed, not only in their doctrinal content, but also in their semantic content and in their hermeneutic possibilities. In short, we try to offer a philological instrument -a Castilian translation-, justified and faithful to the philosophical content, since we maintain the intention of putting the text within the reach of the philosophical study of the Hispanic world. The present project aims to cover a gap in the Spanish editions of a very important author. We aspire to provide a stable translation and a sufficient documentation that allows the study of the texts that occupy us, offering not only the translation but a version of the original text that facilitates collating and discussing the semantic and philosophical sense of its content. In short, the general objective is to produce a scientific, stable and faithful edition of the proposed texts. In addition, it is intended to develop, as we have said, the theoretical core of the interpretation of Thomas Aquinas to the Aristotelian work in general and to Metaphysics in particular.

Methodology

The methodology required by the kind of work that has been carried out is a direct access to the original text of Thomas Aquinas, in order to understand, translate and discuss it critically. The grounds are the critical edition of Thomas's Commentary on Metaphysics. However, although it may seem incredible, there is no critical edition of that work. However, we have an edition that we could describe as scientific, because it has the sufficient quality to satisfactorily access the text that came out of the pen by Thomas Aquinas. For this reason, we use not only the edition of M.-R. Cathala, which is what we can call scientific, especially after the very careful corrections of Raymundus Spiazzi, edited by the Marietti house, but also other editions, at least the Vivès, Parma and Alarcón, whose texts have been confronted to detect possible variants. As for the translation, the Spanish tradition has been taken into account for the translation of the philosophical terms used in metaphysics, without this obstructing us to discuss the validity and accuracy of the proposed versions and, if this is the case, to proceed justifiably new translations The problem of the fixation in Spanish of a metaphysical vocabulary becomes especially serious in the case of Aristotle's translation. Our thesis is not focused on the translation of the Aristotelian text, however, we think we should give it to the reader, along with the Latin version that Thomas Aquinas handled, in order to make the Thomistic exposition more intelligible. Our version of the Aristotelian text has been that of Moerbeke, but not as it has been edited by García Yebra, since he has introduced abundant variations, unknown by Thomas Aquinas, which make it difficult to know what Thomas had before his eyes when commenting on Aristotle . From that version of Moerbeke we have given the Spanish version, so that the reader can know what Tomás was saying. In general, the structure of the Marietti edition has been maintained, retaining the style, numbering and schemes introduced by its curators. However, we have moved away from it for the sake of understanding and philosophical cohesion, indicating it in the critical apparatus. As for the introduction and comment, the methodology has been oriented to include the work in its context, trying to develop the most interesting points in the light of the continental philosophical tradition. It is not a matter of providing a new interpretation of the text, but of reconstructing its original meaning and making it accessible to Spanish readers and scholars. For this we will rely on the interpretations of contemporary authors of the Aristotelian-Thomistic tradition such as Enrico Berti, James Weisheipl, Jean Pierre Torrell or Jesús García López.
