La figura del tyrannus en la tradición literaria del Reino Visigodo de Toledo a la luz de las obras de Juan de Bíclaro, Isidoro de Sevilla y Julián de Toledo

Abstract

Bajo el título “La figura del tyrannus en la tradición literaria del reino visigodo de Toledo a la luz de las obras de Juan de Bíclaro, Isidoro de Sevilla y Julián de Toledo” hemos acometido el estudio de la figura del tirano en el reino visigodo de Toledo dada su gran importancia histórica ya que conforma uno de los axiomas, junto al del rey ungido, de la teología política visigoda. Para realizar este trabajo de investigación nos hemos basado en la visión que tenían de estos personajes tres de los intelectuales visigodos más influyentes de la historia de este reino: Juan de Bíclaro, Isidoro de Sevilla y Julián de Toledo. Por este motivo, el estudio se estructura en 6 grandes partes. Una primera que son las bases intelectuales necesarias para enteder el pensamiento historiológico de las fuentes primarias que vamos a tratar. Una segunda parte que está dedicada propiamente dicha a las fuentes literarias que se sitúan como cuerpo de estudio de la investigación. La tercera parte es capital en nuestra tesis ya que integra el catálogo de los tiranos que aparecen en las fuentes que conforman el presupuesto teórico de nuestro estudio. La cuarta parte son las conclusiones perteneciendo la quinta y sexta parte al aparato crítico y anexos del trabajo. De este modo, ha sido el propósito de este estudio analizar a aquellos personajes que se alzan contra el poder central puesto que representan una realidad acuciante de la historia de este reino. Dicho proceso al que estamos haciendo referencia es al de la erosión del poder monárquico a favor de una serie de facciones nobiliarias que aspiran a obtener más autonomía. Demostraremos como las rebeliones que precipitan estos enfrentamientos no son de naturaleza religiosa como las ha tomado la historiografía tradicional en la mayoría de casos (por ejemplo la de Sunna, la habida en Caracasona, la de Hermenegildo, etc) sino que la auténtica naturaleza de estas rebeliones es política y se enmarca dentro del enfrentamiento común entre nobleza y monarquía que se daba en el seno del reino toledano. También se expondrá la parte intelectual en la creación de estos personajes dentro de las fuentes primarias ya que será el enfrentamiento entre ambos grupos lo que de lugar a la génesis de estos tiranos que encabezarán estos movimientos. Sin embargo, estos serán tildados como tiranos únicamente cuando sus rebeliones fracasen. De ahí que estos personajes gocen de una serie de esteriotipos literarios que se confrontan a los del rey siendo ambos categorías de poder que se necesitan para realzar y fortalecer sus propias virtudes y defectos. Por lo tanto, ha sido nuestro objetivo, demostrar como la conformación de estos tiranos es una creación literaria por parte de las esferas intelectuales godas. De igual manera, las derrotas de estos personajes se insertan dentro de un pensamiento historiológico clave en la Antigüedad Tardía que es el juicio de Dios como categoría histórica. Dicho pensamiento a su vez está asociado a un esquema pecado-castigo. De ahí que podamos observar la importancia que tendrá la teología y el derecho penal para poder abordar con éxito la conformación de esta tesis como se verá a lo largo de ella. Gracias a este análisis, obtendremos información acerca del pensamiento historiológico, de las categorías de poder y de su concepción dentro del imaginario de las fuentes primarias visigodas, así como trazar conclusiones sobre la concepción del tyrannus y su sacralización/demonización en el reino visigodo de Toledo en particular y en la Antigüedad Tardía en general donde el lenguaje civil y político se carga de tintes bíblicos.

Under the title "The figure of the tyrannus in the literary tradition of the Visigothic kingdom of Toledo in light of the works of Juan de Bíclaro, Isidoro de Sevilla and Julián de Toledo" we have undertaken the study of the figure of the tyrant in the Visigothic kingdom of Toledo given its great historical importance as it forms one of the axioms, along with the anointed king, Visigothic political theology. To carry out this research work we have based on the vision of these characters three of the most influential Visigoth intellectuals in the history of this kingdom: Juan de Bíclaro, Isidoro de Sevilla and Julián de Toledo. For this reason, the study is structured in 6 parts. The first one is the intellectual bases necessary to understand the historical thought of the primary sources that we are going to deal with. A second part that is properly dedicated to the literary sources that are situated as the body of study of research. The third part is capital in our thesis since it integrates the catalog of tyrants that appear in the sources that make up the theoretical budget of our study. The fourth part is the conclusions belonging to the fifth and sixth part to the critical apparatus and annexes of the work. In this way, it has been the purpose of this study to analyze those characters who rise up against the central power since they represent a pressing reality of the history of this kingdom. This process we are referring to is that of the erosion of monarchical power in favor of a series of noble factions that aspire to obtain more autonomy. We will show how the rebellions that precipitate these confrontations are not of a religious nature as traditional historiography has taken them in most cases (for example: Sunna, Caracasona, Hermenegildo, etc.) but the authentic nature of these rebellions is political and is part of the common confrontation between nobility and monarchy that took place in the heart of the Toledo kingdom. The intellectual part in the creation of these characters within the primary sources will also be exposed since it will be the confrontation between both groups which will give rise to the genesis of these tyrants who will lead these movements. However, these will be branded as tyrants only when their rebellions fail. Hence, these characters enjoy a series of literary stereotypes that are compared to those of the king being both categories of power that are needed to enhance and strengthen their own virtues and defects. Therefore, it has been our objective, to demonstrate how the conformation of these tyrants is a literary creation on the part of the intellectual Gothic spheres. In the same way, the defeats of these characters are inserted within a key historical thought in Late Antiquity that is the judgment of God as historical category. This thought in turn is associated with a sin-punishment scheme. Hence we can observe the importance of theology and criminal law to be able to successfully address the formation of this thesis as will be seen throughout it. Thanks to this analysis, we will obtain information about the histological thinking, the categories of power and their conception within the imaginary of the Visigoth primary sources, as well as draw conclusions about the conception of the tyrannus and its sacralization / demonization in the Visigothic kingdom of Toledo in particular and in Late Antiquity in general where civil and political language is loaded with biblical overtones.
