Paseos a contra-tiempo : Sophie Calle, W. G. Sebald y Robert Smithson, caminantes con ecos de Walter Benjamin

Abstract

Esta tesis es una investigación de raíces ensayísticas que indaga en el concepto de desplazamiento en dos artistas –Sophie Calle y Robert Smithson– y un escritor, W. G. Sebald. Se trata de analizar el caminar como una herramienta que trasciende la práctica estética, contemplativa o bucólica, para situarse como una metodología que posibilita la reflexión, el empoderamiento, y la elaboración crítica de la realidad urbana y social. Se constituye, por tanto, como una estrategia subversiva hacia el modelo espacial heredado que se basa en el racionalismo, la funcionalidad, y el valor productivista del mismo.

Se ha establecido, como marco inicial teórico de esta tesis, las transformaciones urbanas y sociales que surgen en el siglo XIX en el contexto de la ciudad de París, puesto que es en esa escenografía cuando tiene lugar la conformación de un sujeto urbano surgido gracias a estos cambios tecnológicos y económicos. De este modo, y a través del estudio llevado a cabo por Walter Benjamin, entre otros teóricos, se plantea cómo la ciudad cambia los modos de percepción y experiencia en los individuos. Se quiere establecer un paralelismo entre las diferentes figuras urbanas de la modernidad y posmodernidad –por ejemplo el caso del flâneur o del detective– antecedentes directos de estos artistas que utilizan el desplazamiento por la ciudad y su periferia como herramienta de reflexión sobre la realidad urbana desde una perspectiva crítica.

El principal objetivo es analizar las obras de los artistas estudiados. Así, en el caso de la artista francesa Sophie Calle, se analiza su primera producción artística donde destaca la subversión del mandato de género aplicado al espacio urbano, su reivindicación del derecho a la ciudad, posibilitando la aprehensión y la apropiación de la ciudad como territorio donde experimentar el juego y lo azaroso. En el caso del escritor W.G Sebald, se analiza una novela titulada Los Anillos de Saturno, en la que, en clave autobiográfica, se relata el paseo por pueblos y zonas periféricas del condado inglés de Suffolk. Y por último en las obras de Robert Smithson se analiza el desplazamiento suburbial por la periferia norteamericana, donde se enfrenta a la realidad de forma dialéctica: contraponiendo los desequilibrios generados por el sistema capitalista basado en el progreso y el desarrollo biológico de los procesos presentes de la naturaleza. Ruinas y deshechos industriales en su proceso irreversible, de degradación y de entropía.

Metodología

Esta tesis responde ante un parámetro metodológico interdisciplinar, cuyo objetivo no es el de analizar un objeto de estudio desde el punto de vista historicista, sino que aborda una visión crítica de los autores escogidos, para que, en última instancia, se ahonde en un cuestionamiento sobre las relaciones entre urbanismo y el capitalismo en la sociedad posfordista, las dimensiones del paisaje y sus transformaciones antropogénicas, y las condiciones materiales y temporales de estos cambios.

Conclusiones

Las prácticas artísticas aquí analizadas conforman una constelación de experiencias que relatan otras maneras de crear, construir y producir subjetividad en una época donde el atrofia de la experiencia, tal como predecía Walter Benjamin, es un hecho constatable. Los tres autores coinciden en valerse del desplazamiento a pie para elaborar sus obras, ya sean estas foto ensayos, novelas, o instalaciones. Caminar por la ciudad y su periferia como forma de producir fuera de la lógica acumulativa, que apela a la recreación, reflexión y subversión de los parámetros heredados por el racionalismo. También constituyen fórmulas de representación y de narración que señalan y apuntan a la fractura de una época, a la visibilización de un cambio de paradigma.

This thesis is an investigation of essay roots that investigates the concept of displacement in two artists -Sophie Calle and Robert Smithson- and a writer, W. G. Sebald. The aim is to analyze walking as a tool that transcends aesthetic, contemplative or bucolic practice, to situate itself as a methodology that enables reflection, empowerment, and the critical elaboration of urban and social reality. It is constituted, therefore, as a subversive strategy towards the inherited spatial model that is based on rationalism, functionality, and the productivist value of it.

The urban and social transformations that emerged in the nineteenth century in the context of the city of Paris have been established as the initial theoretical framework of this thesis, since it is in this scenography that the conformation of an urban subject arises thanks to These technological and economic changes. In this way, and through the study carried out by Walter Benjamin, among other theorists, it is considered how the city changes the modes of perception and experience in individuals. We want to establish a parallelism between the different urban figures of modernity and postmodernity -for example the case of the flâneur or the detective- direct backgrounds of these artists who use the displacement by the city and its periphery as a tool for reflection on the urban reality from a critical perspective.

The main objective is to analyze the works of the artists studied. Thus, in the case of the French artist Sophie Calle, her first artistic production is analyzed, highlighting the subversion of the gender mandate applied to the urban space, her vindication of the right to the city, making possible the apprehension and appropriation of the city as a territory where to experience the game and the random. In the case of the writer W.G Sebald, a novel entitled The Rings of Saturn is analyzed, in which, in an autobiographical key, the walk through villages and outlying areas of the English county of Suffolk is related. And finally, in the works of Robert Smithson, suburbial displacement is analyzed by the American periphery, where reality is confronted dialectically: by counterbalancing the imbalances generated by the capitalist system based on the progress and biological development of the present processes of nature. Ruins and industrial waste in its irreversible process, degradation and entropy.

Methodology

This thesis responds to an interdisciplinary methodological parameter, whose objective is not to analyze an object of study from the historicist point of view, but rather to approach a critical vision of the chosen authors, so that, in the end, it is deepened in a questioning on the relations between urbanism and capitalism in post-Fordist society, the dimensions of the landscape and its anthropogenic transformations, and the material and temporal conditions of these changes

Conclusions

The artistic practices analyzed here define a constellation of experiences that relate other ways of creating, producing and producing subjectivity in an era where the atrophy of experience, as predicted by Walter Benjamin, is a verifiable fact. The three authors agree to use the displacement on foot to make their works, whether these photos, novels or installations. Walking through the city and its periphery as a way of producing outside the cumulative logic, which appeals to recreation, reflection and subversion of the parameters inherited by rationalism. They are also formulas of representation and narration that point out the fracture of an era, to the visibility of a paradigm shift.
