This dissertation examines the relationship between the fantastic and the autofictional elements in two contemporary authors, principally Mario Bellatin and César Aira. Although there are already several essays and critical studies dealing with autofiction as a modality of the autobiography, this Thesis focuses on the fictive frame of autofiction. To better understand this complex literary subgenre, a first section of this work explores the rapport between autofiction and the fantastic, trying to unveil the links between both, along with their origins, evolution, and early literary manifestations. This section also includes a diachronic study of classic authors from different traditions who have constructed "fictions of the self" in fantastic or imaginary key. Thus, the initial part of this thesis offers a "genealogical tree" of early texts and authors that weave together autofiction and fantasy with the purpose of providing a theoretical base to study in depth the main authors of this thesis. Subsequent sections study the development of fantastic autofiction in both Spain and Latin America, including authors who have not yet been framed within this sub-genre. After laying the overall historical and theorical groundwork, the second, and larger part of the Thesis, analyzes the fantastic autofictional works of the Argentinian César Aira and the Mexican Mario Bellatin. The methodology followed is based on an analytical reading of their works, which are placed in relation to the existing critical literature on the relation between autofiction and fantasy. In particular, the readings offered in the Thesis are framed in relation to Doležel's theories of "possible worlds", Genette and Todorov's classic narratological categories, and against pioneering studies in the field of autofiction by Vincent Colonna, Serge Doubrovsky, Ana Casas, José María Pozuelo Yvancos, Philip Gasparini or Manuel Alberca, among others. Further theoretical reference points are the studies on the fantastic by Todorov, David Roas, Víctor Bravo, or Irène Bessière. Besides, the analyses presented here take into account, and differ from, essays on Bellatin and Aira by Julio Premat, José Amícola, Sandra Contreras, Mariano García, Francisco José López Alonso or Diana Palaversich, to name the most outstanding. This thesis sheds light on the paradoxical and little studied binomy formed by autofiction and the fantastic; it demonstrates that this combination may be already found in antiquity. One of the most important conclusions is that the author, including himself as a character (homodiegetically or heterodiegetically) increases the fantastic tenor of the story, due to the breakdown of ontological orders that it provokes. Also, when studying autofiction as fiction –rather than as autobiography- it becomes evident that the author deconstructs and adulterates his identity, recreating, in a more playful than referential procedure, an avatar of himself, a fictional entity.
