Claves musicales en la novelística de Alejo Carpentier

Abstract

RESUMEN La presente Tesis Doctoral aborda el estudio de la importancia de la música en la novelística de Alejo Carpentier. Dicho autor cubano, además de escritor, fue musicólogo, y por tanto estas imbricaciones pueden verse de manera notable en su producción literaria. La música tendrá gran relevancia en su obra, constituyendo junto con la arquitectura y la conciencia histórico-social los ejes de su narrativa, y a su análisis hemos procedido con nuestro trabajo de investigación. Siguiendo una metodología de hermenéutica textual, hemos abordado las diferentes manifestaciones y claves musicales de su discurso narrativo desde una visión interdisciplinar. Así, podemos encontrar en las novelas carpenterianas la música en todas sus manifestaciones. De este modo, resultan relevantes las elecciones de muchos de los personajes, de las partituras que aparecen en interacción, las referencias a distintos compositores de música culta como a diversas variantes de música popular –desde la afroamericana a las canciones populares europeas o las canciones para el trabajo, y diversos estilos como el jazz, la salsa, el son, etc.-, el modo de recepción de la música, las relaciones entre la música y la sociedad, la manera en que ésta va cambiando y transculturándose, las diversas funciones que lo musical adopta en determinados momentos, así como las cuestiones rítmicas y la importancia del tempo. Atendiendo a estas cuestiones, llenando un vacío que existía en la crítica academicista sobre dicha temática, hemos concluido que la música constituye una forma de discurso en la novelística de Alejo Carpentier, proporcionando su propia identidad en los textos, y siendo incluso en muchas ocasiones una razón de ser de la misma literatura, relacionándose con los propios planteamientos teóricos del autor. La música vertebra el pensamiento y la escritura carpenteriana. El eje que se establece entre las dos artes -literatura y música- es primordial, así como sus propias impresiones arrojadas en sus textos ensayísticos, conferencias, conversaciones… Por tanto, música y literatura marcan un punto base desde el que leer e interpretar toda la obra de Alejo Carpentier, y sus novelas son una buena muestra de ello.

SUMMARY This Doctoral Thesis deals with the study of the importance of music in Alejo Carpentier's novels. This Cuban author was a musicologist as well as writer, and therefore these imbrications can be seen in a remarkable way in his literary production. Music will have great relevance in his work, constituting together with the architecture and the historical-social consciousness the axes of his narrative, and we have proceeded to its analysis with our research work. Following a methodology of textual hermeneutics, we have tackled the different manifestations and musical keys of his narrative discourse from an interdisciplinary view. Thus, we can find music in all its manifestations in Carpentier's novels. In this way, the choices of many of the characters, the scores that appear in interaction, the references to different composers of highbrow music as well as to several variations of popular music -from the Afroamerican music to the European popular songs or the songs for working, and different styles such as jazz, salsa, son, etc.-, the way of receiving music, the relationships between music and society, the way it changes and going transcultural, the different functions that musical matters adopt in certain moments, as well as the rhythmic questions and the importance of the tempo seem relevant. In light of these questions, filling a gap that existed in the academic critics on the subject, we have concluded that music is a form of discourse in Alejo Carpentier's novels, providing its own identity in the texts, and even being in many cases a raison d’être of the literature itself, relating to the author's own theoretical approaches. Music is the basis of Carpentier's thought and writing. The axis that is established between the two arts- literature and music - is essential, as well as his own impressions shown in his essays, lectures, conversations ... Therefore, music and literature mark a base point from which to read and interpret all the work of Alejo Carpentier, and his novels are a good example of this.
