Abstract: In this first chapter we will explain the concept of Personal Learning Environment (PLE, hereinafter). To do this, we will first analyze the context in which this concept emerges, how it has evolved over time, and propose a comprehensive definition. Finally, we will relate the PLE concept to some key ideas about teaching and learning in the 21st century.
