Relaciones semánticas entre los términos de aritmética y álgebra documentados en textos tecnocientíficos del Renacimiento

Abstract

The vernacularization -and profuse diffusion- of the knowledge related to the exact sciences in the sixteenth century triggered two revolutionary facts: on the one hand, the democratization of calculus (promoted by the triumph of the algorists and positional decimal number system of Indo Arabic origin, compared to ineffective use of the abacus) and, on the other, the creation of a suitable terminology for the expression of arithmetic and algebraic concepts, among others. Thus, from a linguistic point of view, the aim of this paper is to high- light and study the semantic relations who contract some of the technical terms that make up this emerging terminology -specifically, the terms of arithmetic and algebra- to get a better knowledge of the history of mathematical specialized vocabulary at the beginning of his expression in Spanish.

La vernacularización -y profusa difusión- de los saberes vinculados a las ciencias exactas en el siglo XVI desencadenó dos hechos revolucionarios: por un lado, la democratización del cálculo (promovido por el triunfo de los algoristas y el sistema numérico decimal posicional de origen indo-arábigo, frente al ineficaz uso del ábaco) y, por otro, la creación de una terminología apta para la expresión de conceptos aritmético algebraicos, entre otros. Desde un punto de vista lingüístico, el objetivo de este trabajo consiste en poner de manifiesto y estudiar las relaciones semánticas que contraen algunos de los tecnicismos que integran esta incipiente terminología -concretamente, los términos de aritmética y álgebra-, para obtener, así, un conocimiento más adecuado de la historia del léxico especializado matemático en los albores de su expresión en lengua española.
