Les voyages d'Edward Morgan Forster et Pierre Loti: des regards anglais et français sur l'Inde

Abstract

Los dos autores viajeros, Pierre Loti (1850 - 1923) y Edward Morgan Forster (1879 - 1970) vivieron la modernización de Europa y la expansión colonial, pero frente a este período de cambio y de confianza en el progreso de Occidente, Loti y Forster, entre otros autores, encontraron otras realidades en Oriente a través de sus viajes a la India, que dieron fruto a L'Inde (Sans les Anglais) (1903) de Loti, y A Passage to India (1924) de Forster. El desplazamiento a la India tiene motivaciones diferentes, pero el viaje permite una transformación para los viajeros, pues adquieren nuevas perspectivas y experiencias. Al viajar a la India, sus visiones del país son diversas a las reflejadas en las literaturas inglesa y francesa de sus contemporáneos o de los autores románticos, que han imaginado una India cargada de misterio y exotismo sin nunca visitar el país. Así, el desplazamiento, el viaje, permite el encuentro con el "otro" a la vez que una reflexión sobre sí mismo y la cultura propia. De este modo, alteridad e identidad son un tema constante durante el viaje y en el proceso de escritura del viaje.

Both travel writers, Pierre Loti (1850 - 1923) and Edward Morgan Forster (1870 - 1970) saw Europe's modernization and colonial expansion, but facing this period of change and confidence in the progress of the West, Loti and Forster, among other writers, found other realities in the East thanks to their travels in India, which inspired India (Without the English) (1903) to Loti, and A Passage to India (1924) to Forster. Travelling to India had different motivations, but the whole trip produces a transformation in the travellers, as they acquire new perspectives and experiences. By travelling to India, their visions of the country are different to those reflected in English and French literature of their contemporaries, as well as romantic authors' who imagined India as a mysterious and exotic land without even visiting it. In this sense, travelling allows the encounter with "the other" and at the same time reflecting on oneself and one's own culture. Thus, otherness and identity are constant concerns during the journey and in the process of travel writing.
