El grupo de mujeres de Tebas: caza e imaginería animal en Las Bacantes de Eurípides

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to study the hunting metaphor and the animal imagery related to the Theban women in Euripides' Bacchae. For this purpose, the specific characteristics of these women's hunting are analyzed and an interpretation for the animal similes attributed to them is offered. In this regard, it is evidenced that the bestial qualities of the Theban women, the type of hunting that they perform and their relationship with snakes is common in the representation of female hunting demons. This leads to the conclusion that in the Euripidean representation of this myth, the women from Thebes take the shape of a dreadful divine weapon sent by Dionysus.

El objetivo de este artículo es estudiar la metáfora cinegética y la imaginería animal referida a las mujeres de Tebas en las Bacantes de Eurípides. Para ello, se analizan las características específicas de la caza de las tebanas en esta pieza y se ofrece una interpretación para los símiles animales que les son atribuidos. Se constata, en este sentido, que las cualidades bestiales de las tebanas, el tipo de caza que llevan a cabo así como su relación con las serpientes son comunes en la representación de diversos demonios femeninos de naturaleza cazadora. Esto permite concluir que en la adaptación euripídea del mito, las mujeres de Tebas toman la forma de una temible arma divina enviada por Dioniso.
