Ilustrando milagros : las imágenes milagrosas de la Virgen en los manuscritos del siglo XIII de Gautier de Coinci

Abstract

La presente Tesis Doctoral aborda el estudio de las imágenes milagrosas de la Virgen en el texto y los manuscritos ilustrados del siglo XIII de Les Miracles de Nostre Dame, escrita por Gautier de Coinci antes de 1236. En torno al año 1000, el culto de estas representaciones incrementa gracias al resurgimiento de la escultura monumental, la atribución de propiedades taumatúrgicas y el rol mediador de María. Más tarde, la influencia de los postulados del II Concilio de Nicea, y las nuevas necesidades devocionales fueron los que legitimaron su estatus como objetos sagrados. La relación entre cultura escrita y visual ha generado una amplía historiografía en torno a la imagen medieval, donde la mirada no se centra en su condición de objeto artístico sino en los usos y funciones que desempeñaba. Por tanto, los objetivos de esta investigación son el análisis del papel de la imagen en el texto, la definición de las normas iconográficas y delimitar su aportación a la problemática de la Imago en la Baja Edad Media. La obra del monje benedictino es crucial para entender su construcción cultural; por un lado, su texto la presenta bajo tres características (objeto de devoción, agente y mediadora) y en cuyos argumentos une la tradición occidental con el ideario bizantino, por otro, las ilustraciones muestran la relación con su prototipo sagrado a través de diferentes pautas de representación. Ambos aspectos revelan que la imagen gótica se construyó por la confluencia de dos discursos, el teológico y el devocional, y su emergente cultura visual. This Thesis addresses the study of the miraculous images of the Virgin in the 13th century text and illuminated manuscripts of ‘Les Miracles de Nostre Dame”, a collection written by Gautier de Coinci before 1236. Around the year 1000, the cult of these representations increases thanks to the resurgence of monumental sculpture, the attribution of miraculous properties to the image and the role of Mary as an intercessor. Later on the influence of Byzantine postulates of the II Council of Nicea and new devotional necessities legitimated their status as sacred objects. The relation between written and visual culture has generated an ample historiography around medieval images, where the focus is not only placed on their artistic condition but on their uses and functions. Thus, the research objectives are, first, to analyse the role of the image in the text and then to define iconographic rules and delimit their contribution to the Early Middle Ages issue of Imago. The literary work by the Benedictine monk is crucial to understand this cultural construction. On one hand, his texts present Mary under three perspectives (object of devotion, agent, and intercessor) and, also, his arguments join the western tradition with Byzantine ideology. On the other hand, the illustrations show the relation with the holy prototype through different modes of representation. Both aspects reveal that the gothic image was constructed by the confluence of two discourses, the theological and the devotional, together with their emerging visual culture.
