Terminología e ideología. Cinco interpretaciones de la antítesis conceptual alemana entre Kultur y Zivilisation durante la Primera guerra mundial

Abstract

En este artículo se tratará de poner de relieve el rol de la ideología en la evolución semántica de «cultura» y «civilización», dos términos clave en la historia intelectual contemporánea. El autor he elegido para ello una lengua, la alemana, y un periodo histórico concreto, la Primera guerra mundial, porque es precisamente entonces cuando Kultur y Zivilisation se convierten en palabras de combate. La segunda parte del trabajo se centra en el análisis de las causas que, según los principales autores que han estudiado la cuestión, han provocado la génesis, desarrollo y pervivencia de la oposición conceptual entre ambos términos en alemán. Se aludirá, en primer lugar, a la tendencia antitética característica de la lengua alemana; en segundo lugar, a la trascendencia del modelo de la cultura animi; en tercer lugar, a la separación de ambos conceptos en dos sistemas de pensamiento históricamente divergentes (el alemán, por una parte, y francés y anglosajón, por otra); en cuarto lugar, a otras causas de tipo político y social; y, por último, al papel de la propia Primera guerra mundial en la definitiva idealización del término Kultur y la consecuente infravaloración de Zivilisation. El artículo finaliza con un breve apartado en el que se destaca la especificidad evidente de esta antítesis conceptual a la luz de la historia de las ciencias humanas y sociales, dada la escaso influencia o transferencia semántica que ejerció sobre las respectivas equivalencias conceptuales en lengua inglesa o francesa.

ABSTRACT This article attempts to highlight the role of ideology in the semantic evolution of "culture" and "civilization", two key terms in contemporary intellectual history. The author has chosen for the purpose a particular language, German, and a specific historical period, the First World War, since it is then when Kultur and Zivilisation became fighting words. The second part of the paper focuses on the analysis of the causes which, according to the main authors who have dealt with the topic, have triggered the genesis, development and survival of the conceptual opposition between the two terms in German. Reference will be made firstly to the antithetical tendency typical of the German language; secondly, to the importance of the model of cultura animi; thirdly, to the division of both concepts into two systems of historically divergent thinking (German, on the one hand, and Anglo-Saxon and French, on the other); fourthly, to other causes of political and social nature; and finally, to the role of the First World War itself in the final idealization of the term Kultur and the consequent undervaluation of Zivilisation. The article concludes with a brief section in which the apparent specificity of this conceptual antithesis in light of the history of the humanities and social sciences is highlighted, given the scarce influence or semantic transfer exerted on the same conceptual equivalence in English or French.
