La formación de la clase obrera en Inglaterra : E. P. Thompson y la crisis del marxismo

Abstract

Este artículo aborda la importante y fundamental obra de E. P. Thompson desde la perspectiva de la crisis del marxismo en los años 1960, y la manera cómo esta crisis se refleja en el autor y en la obra. La novedad y la influencia de la obra más conocida de E. P. Thompson tienen que ser entendidas en este contexto específico y crítico, así como el intento revisionista que lleva a cabo como reacción a la crisis del marxismo. Tal revisionismo nos conduce a su apasionada lectura de William Morris. Mediante ésta, descubre una tradición alternativa al marxismo ortodoxo, tanto para investigar la historia de las clases, como para redefinir su propia idea del anti-capitalismo. Esta tradición alternativa fue considerada por E. P. Thompson compatible con las ideas originales de Karl Marx.

ABSTRACT This article addresses the important and fundamental work of E.P.Thompson from the perspective of the crisis of Marxism in the 1960s, and the way that this crisis is reflected by the author. The novelty and influence of E.P. Thompson’s most well-known work must be understood within this specific, critical context, just as one must understand, contextually, his revisionist attempt which he carried out in reaction to the crisis of Marxism. His revisionist views led to his fervent reading of William Morris. Through this, he discovered an alternative tradition to orthodox Marxism, both to investigate the history of the classes, as well as to redefine his own idea of anti-capitalism. This alternative tradition was considered by Thompson to be compatible with the original ideas of Karl Marx.
