Juego de Tronos, personajes femeninos y polémicas mediáticas. Estudio de recepción entre la audiencia hispanohablante

Abstract

Como fenómeno global, Juego de Tronos acumula un gran seguimiento entre las audiencias hispanohablantes. Nuestro objetivo es explorar cómo es la recepción y características de las audiencias castellanoparlantes a propósito de algunas de las reacciones y polémicas mediáticas que rodean a la serie, a menudo centradas en muestras de violencia explícita contra las mujeres y el tratamiento estereotipado de los personajes femeninos. El análisis cualitativo y cuantitativo de 1.492 respuestas de 18 países hispanohablantes al cuestionario online de The Game of Thrones Audience Project muestra un escenario lleno de matices. Los resultados revelan un amplio seguimiento femenino y adulto de los debates generados por la serie y sugieren una comprensión compleja de sus principios narrativos. La audiencia considera que la serie exhibe un discurso empoderador para las mujeres si bien recalca que este protagonismo de los personajes femeninos está ligado a la representación de violencia de género.

As a global phenomenon, Game of Thrones counts with an intense following among Spanish speaking audiences. Our aim is to map the reception and characteristics of Spanish speaking audiences vis-a-vis with some of the reactions and media controversies surrounding the show, often centred on its exhibitions of sheer violence and the cruel and stereotypical treatment of female characters. Drawing on 1,581 responses from 18 Spanish-speaking countries of the online questionnaire of The Game of Thrones Audience Research Project, a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the data presents a more nuanced trend. Results reveal a large female and adult following which keeps up with the debates on the show and displays a complex understanding of its narrative tenets. The show is largely deemed as empowering for women while emphasising that the central role of female characters still comes at the expense of gender-based representations of violence and brutality.
