El cuerpo femenino como herramienta política y social en el siglo XXI: de las suffragettes al activismo feminista contemporáneo

Abstract

El movimiento feminista se ha consolidado como una fuerza de cambio que trasciende lo simbólico, transformando el espacio público en un escenario clave de lucha y reivindicación. Desde las primeras décadas del siglo XXI, numerosos colectivos y movimientos feministas han emergido, situando el cuerpo femenino como un eje fundamental de resistencia y expresión política, utilizando tanto el espacio físico como el virtual para sus reivindicaciones.

En la presente tesis doctoral se analiza, desde una perspectiva teórica y feminista, cómo las estrategias corporales del activismo feminista contemporáneo, empleadas como herramientas de transformación social y política, replican patrones de períodos previos. La investigación parte del supuesto de que el antecedente más relevante del activismo feminista contemporáneo reside en el activismo del sufragismo británico, específicamente en las acciones desarrolladas por las integrantes de la Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU), conocidas como suffragettes, quienes desafiaron las normas sociales de su época al transformar el espacio público en un escenario político a través de actos performativos. Estas acciones, que incluían marchas y desfiles cuidadosamente coreografiados donde se utilizaban de forma simbólica el vestuario, la música, las prácticas textiles y la corporalidad, transformaron el espacio urbano en un escenario de resistencia y denuncia.

Para confirmar nuestra hipótesis, esta investigación combina la revisión bibliográfica y el estudio de casos con el desarrollo del proyecto artístico The Subversive Stitch, donde empleamos el textil como lenguaje principal. El proyecto establece un vínculo conceptual y material con las banderas utilizadas por las sufragistas durante sus marchas, lo que permite trazar conexiones entre el activismo del sufragismo británico y las estrategias actuales del activismo feminista.

Objetivos La tesis tiene como objetivos principales establecer el movimiento sufragista británico como antecedente histórico para el activismo feminista contemporáneo, analizar la utilización del cuerpo femenino en el espacio público como herramienta de protesta política y social en el siglo XXI y desarrollar el proyecto artístico The Subversive Stitch, cuyos contenidos se encuentran en relación con la investigación teórica llevada a cabo.

Metodología La metodología empleada en la presente investigación se ha trabajado a partir de una metodología mixta, que combina, por un lado, el análisis de contenido, a través de la revisión de diferentes fuentes bibliográficas y el estudio de casos, y, por otro lado, el desarrollo de una investigación práctica a través del proyecto artístico The Subversive Stitch, donde empleamos el textil como lenguaje principal.

Conclusiones En nuestra investigación hemos podido demostrar que los colectivos y movimientos analizados destacan por situar el cuerpo femenino como un eje central de sus estrategias comunicativas, utilizándolo no solo como un medio de expresión, sino también como un territorio político que desafía normas patriarcales y estructuras de poder. Estas prácticas performativas integran elementos como la música, el uso de la palabra, el vestuario y una estética cuidadosamente diseñada para captar la atención mediática y visibilizar sus reivindicaciones. En un contexto contemporáneo, estas acciones se complementan con el uso estratégico de plataformas digitales, lo que amplifica su impacto y les permite trascender fronteras, alcanzando una audiencia global. A través de nuestro estudio, constatamos que estas tácticas no son un fenómeno exclusivo del presente, sino que encuentran un antecedente directo en el movimiento sufragista británico.

Por otro lado, hemos comprobado que el proyecto artístico The Subversive Stitch se fundamenta directamente en estos pilares conceptuales, constituyendo una extensión práctica de nuestras conclusiones teóricas. A través de un enfoque interdisciplinar, el proyecto establece conexiones simbólicas y materiales entre las estrategias performativas del sufragismo británico y las acciones de colectivos feministas contemporáneos, tomando como referencia central las banderas utilizadas en las marchas sufragistas como herramientas políticas y estéticas.

The feminist movement has established itself as a transformative force that transcends the symbolic, reshaping public space into a pivotal arena for struggle and advocacy. Since the early decades of the 21st century, numerous feminist collectives and movements have emerged, positioning the female body as a fundamental axis of resistance and political expression, utilizing both physical and virtual spaces for their demands.

This doctoral thesis examines, from a theoretical and feminist perspective, how the corporeal strategies of contemporary feminist activism, employed as tools for social and political transformation, replicate patterns from earlier periods. The research is based on the premise that the most significant antecedent of contemporary feminist activism lies in the British suffragist movement, particularly in the actions carried out by members of the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU), known as the suffragettes. These women challenged the social norms of their time by transforming public space into a political stage through performative acts. These actions included carefully choreographed marches and parades where clothing, music, textile practices, and corporeality were symbolically employed, turning urban spaces into arenas of resistance and denunciation.

To confirm our hypothesis, this research combines a bibliographic review and case study analysis with the development of the artistic project The Subversive Stitch, in which textiles are used as the primary language. The project establishes a conceptual and material link with the banners used by the suffragists during their marches, allowing us to trace connections between the activism of the British suffragist movement and the strategies employed by contemporary feminist activism.

Objectives The primary objectives of this thesis are to establish the British suffragist movement as a historical antecedent to contemporary feminist activism, to analyze the use of the female body in public spaces as a tool for political and social protest in the 21st century, and to develop the artistic project The Subversive Stitch, whose contents are closely related to the theoretical research undertaken. Methodology The methodology employed in this research follows a mixed approach, combining, on one hand, content analysis through the review of various bibliographic sources and case studies, and, on the other, practical research through the development of the artistic project The Subversive Stitch, where textiles are utilized as the primary medium.

Conclusions Our research demonstrates that the collectives and movements analyzed highlight the female body as a central axis of their communicative strategies, employing it not only as a means of expression but also as a political territory that challenges patriarchal norms and power structures. These performative practices incorporate elements such as music, speech, clothing, and a carefully crafted aesthetic to attract media attention and give visibility to their demands. In the contemporary context, these actions are further complemented by the strategic use of digital platforms, which amplify their impact and allow them to transcend borders, reaching a global audience. Our study confirms that these tactics are not exclusive to the present but can be directly traced back to the British suffragist movement.

Moreover, we have found that the artistic project The Subversive Stitch is directly grounded in these conceptual pillars, serving as a practical extension of our theoretical conclusions. Through an interdisciplinary approach, the project establishes symbolic and material connections between the performative strategies of British suffragism and the actions of contemporary feminist collectives, with the banners used in suffragist marches serving as central political and aesthetic tools.
