"Le Fort inexpugnable de l’Honneur du sexe Femenin" de François de Billon en la Querelle des femmes. Tradición e influencias

Abstract

Al final de la segunda Querelle des femmes en Francia, François de Billon escribe "Le Fort inexpugnable de l’honneur du sexe femenin" (1555) en honor de Catherine de Médicis y otras mujeres de elevado nivel social. En esta obra ofrece al lector argumentos para resistir el embate y asedio misógino. Billon detalla los argumentos a favor (y contra) las mujeres con el fin de combatir los prejuicios misóginos. La superioridad de las mujeres que él defiende se basa fundamentalmente en sus cualidades intelectuales, morales, técnicas, inventivas, poéticas, artísticas, jurídicas y retóricas. En su obra podemos hallar la influencia de autores como Cornelius Agrippa para rebatir argumentos clásicos, como los procedentes de Platón o Aristóteles. Sin embargo, no solo se ciñe a estos argumentos “heredados” ya que, gracias a su inmensa cultura, incorpora motivos originales. Incluye en esta obra a muchos autores contemporáneos por medio del elogio a quienes escribieron en favor de las mujeres (Héroët, Ronsard, du Bellay, Saint-Gelais, Jodelle, Baïf, Thiard, Pelletier…) y de la crítica a quienes lo hicieron en contra (Gratien du Pont de Drusac, Rabelais o Erasmo, por ejemplo). El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar los argumentos de su apología tratando de establecer la corriente de influencias.

At the end of the second Querelle des femmes in France, François de Billon wrote "Le Fort inexpugnable de l'Honneur du Sexe Femenin" (1555) in honor of Catherine de Médicis and other women of high social standing. In this work he offers the reader arguments to resist the misogynist onslaught and siege. Billon details the arguments for (and against) women in order to combat misogynist prejudices. The superiority of women that he defends is based primarily on intellectual, moral, technical, inventive, poetic, artistic, legal and rhetorical grounds. In his work, we can find the influence of authors such as Cornelius Agrippa to combat classical arguments such as those coming from Plato or Aristotle. However, he does not only stick to these "inherited" arguments since, thanks to his immense culture, he incorporates original motifs. She includes in this work many contemporary authors by praising those who wrote in favor of women (Héroët, Ronsard, du Bellay, Saint-Gelais, Jodelle, Baïf, Thiard, Pelletier...) and by criticizing those who displayed a misogynist position (Gratien du Pont de Drusac, Rabelais or Erasmus, for example). The aim of this work is none other than to analyze the arguments of his apologia, trying to establish the flow of influences.
