Del "Deus abconditus" al Ser que es palabra : el pensamiento religioso de José María Valverde en su poesía

Abstract

El objeto de estudio de esta tesis es el pensamiento religioso de José María Valverde que se desprende de su producción poética. El estudio del pensamiento religioso de José María Valverde aborda la aportación singular y única del poeta extremeño que aúna en su obra tanto la dimensión filosófica como la poética junto con una vivencia de la fe católica personalísima, que con los años paulatinamente se verá acrisolada y purificada hasta una consumada madurez. Los objetivos de la tesis son los siguientes: a) Repasar tanto la persona del poeta como el contexto en el que se desarrolla su obra. b) Analizar la vivencia del Dios escondido, que se manifiesta en la fe adolescencial, una imagen de Dios distante. c) Explorar la presencia divina en lo circundante reactivando el sentimiento de trascendencia en el poeta y convirtiéndolo así en un motivo poético transversal. d) Estudiar el sentimiento de espera y, más aún, de esperanza al superar tiempos pretéritos llenos de certezas y seguridades. e) Analizar cómo el sentimiento religioso que brota del poeta se deja verter o traducir en el lenguaje. f) Examinar la fe cristiana de Valverde puesta al servicio de los pobres y desheredados. En cuanto a la metodología utilizada se fundamenta en el estudio de los textos poéticos originales completos de José María Valverde, así como en los ensayos teóricos, innumerables artículos de opinión en revistas, la correspondencia mantenida con escritores, filósofos y hombres de la cultura y de la fe; y otros escritos cuya temática se circunscribe al objeto de investigación de esta tesis. Ha sido fundamental para el desarrollo de la misma el material leído y analizado proveniente del Fondo Personal Valverde, que está reunido en el CRAI -Biblioteca del Pabellón de la República. Los resultados o conclusiones de la tesis son, entre otros, los siguientes: 1. Los años de posguerra y el ambiente cultural enmarcado en el nacional-catolicismo influyen decisivamente en la visión del mundo de un joven poeta que empieza a adentrarse en el panorama cultural español.

2. En la experiencia religiosa, el silencio de Dios se convierte en uno de sus hitos culminantes. La ausencia de Dios va tiñendo de marcada angustia existencial la voz poética que no consigue desprenderse de un miedo cada vez más amenazador.

3. El Dios que se esconde deja abierta una senda por la que poder transitar en su busca, una pequeña abertura, una espita para intentar aproximarse a su presencia. La poética valverdiana pone su acento en lo pequeño, en la inmanencia, en la naturaleza como camino de acceso a lo divino.

4. El Dios que prefiere esconderse deja un invisible rastro a través de las criaturas y ofrece la virtud de la esperanza, condición eldípica propia del hombre. Pero la esperanza también tiene otra dimensión y es la que Valverde quiere acentuar, la esperanza en el ser humano a partir de la experiencia amorosa que da sentido a la existencia, la evitación del abismo que amenaza constantemente al ser humano.

5. El Dios de la esperanza es también el Dios que se hace lenguaje y crea al ser humano como ser-de-palabra. La toma de conciencia del lenguaje acarrea una serie de implicaciones que se asemejan a la noche oscura del alma, el caer en la cuenta de que la actividad espiritual es siempre lingüística pues no hay pensamiento sin lenguaje.

6. El Dios de la esperanza se transforma, ineludiblemente, en el Dios de los pobres. El cristianismo no puede eludir esta opción preferencial por los más desfavorecidos. Valverde se convierte en voz para los que han comprobado cómo les ha sido arrebatada la propia voz.

The object of study of this thesis is the religious thought of José María Valverde that emerges from his poetic production. The study of the religious thought of José María Valverde addresses the singular and unique contribution of the Extremaduran poet who combines in his work both the philosophical and poetic dimensions along with a very personal experience of the Catholic faith, which over the years will gradually be refined and purified to consummate maturity.

The objectives of the thesis are the following:

a) Review both the person of the poet and the context in which his work develops.

b) Analyze the experience of the hidden God, which manifests itself in adolescent faith, an image of distant God.

c) Explore the divine presence in the surroundings, reactivating the feeling of transcendence in the poet and thus converting it into a transversal poetic motif.

d) Study the feeling of waiting and, even more, of hope when overcoming past times full of certainties and securities.

e) Analyze how the religious feeling that emerges from the poet can be expressed or translated into language.

f) Examine Valverde's Christian faith placed at the service of the poor and disinherited.

Regarding the methodology used, it is based on the study of the complete original poetic texts of José María Valverde, as well as the theoretical essays, countless opinion articles in magazines, the correspondence maintained with writers, philosophers and men of culture and Faith; and other writings whose subject matter is limited to the research object of this thesis. The material read and analyzed from the Valverde Personal Fund, which is gathered in the CRAI - Library of the Pavilion of the Republic, has been fundamental for its development.

The results or conclusions of the thesis are, among others, the following:

1. The post-war years and the cultural environment framed in national-Catholicism decisively influence the world view of a young poet who begins to delve into the Spanish cultural panorama.

2. In the religious experience, God's silence becomes one of its culminating milestones. The absence of God colors the poetic voice with marked existential anguish that cannot free itself from an increasingly threatening fear.

3. The God who hides leaves open a path along which to travel in search of him, a small opening, a spigot to try to approach his presence. Valverdian poetics places its emphasis on the small, on immanence, on nature as a path to the divine.

4. The God who prefers to hide leaves an invisible trail through creatures and offers the virtue of hope, an elliptical condition characteristic of man. But hope also has another dimension and it is the one that Valverde wants to accentuate, hope in the human being based on the loving experience that gives meaning to existence, the avoidance of the abyss that constantly threatens the human being.

5. The God of hope is also the God who becomes language and creates the human being as a word-being. The awareness of language carries a series of implications that resemble the dark night of the soul, the realization that spiritual activity is always linguistic since there is no thought without language.

6. The God of hope inevitably transforms into the God of the poor. Christianity cannot avoid this preferential option for the most disadvantaged. Valverde becomes a voice for those who have seen how their own voice has been taken away from them.
