El Santuario de Atargatis en Carthago Nova : un complejo escenográfico en el Mediterráneo tardorrepublicano

Abstract

El objetivo de este trabajo es el estudio del santuario de Atargatis en Carthago Nova, estructurándose en una introducción y cuatro capítulos. En la Introducción se analiza el santuario de Carthago Nova en su contexto, presentando la ciudad en general, así como la evolución a lo largo de la historia de la colina del Molinete, en cuya cima se desarrolla el complejo santuarial. El primer capítulo está centrado en el santuario y en él se presenta y analiza toda la documentación archivística y arqueológica recuperada, restituyendo la historia de las excavaciones llevadas a cabo en el santuario, la descripción e interpretación de las estructuras encontradas, el inventario de los materiales referibles a las UE de pertenencia y una propuesta de periodización de sus diferentes fases. El segundo capítulo se concentra en el culto de Atargatis, tanto a través de un breve análisis historiográfico, como a través de un excursus de los contextos arqueológicos y las evidencias monumentales relativas, tratando de captar sus peculiaridades. En el tercer capítulo se examinan los complejos santuariales escenográficos de tradición helenística en el Mediterráneo occidental, y más en particular los ejemplos de este tipo edilicio en Lazio y en la península ibérica. En el último capítulo se proponen algunas consideraciones conclusivas, en línea con lo discutido en los capítulos anteriores, comparando el santuario de Atargatis y sus especificidades monumentales con los complejos escenográficos y la tipología templaria de los contextos centro-italianos e ibéricos.

The objective of this work is the study of the sanctuary of Atargatis in Carthago Nova and is structured into an introduction and four chapters. The introductory chapter outlines the sanctuary of Carthago Nova in its context, presenting the city in general, as well as the evolution throughout the history of the Molinete hill, on whose summit the sanctuary complex develops. The first chapter focuses on the sanctuary and presents and analyses all the archival and archaeological documentation recovered, reconstructing the history of the excavations conducted in the sanctuary, the description and interpretation of the found structures, the inventory of materials referable to the pertinent SU, and a proposed periodization of its different phases. The second chapter concentrates on the cult of Atargatis, both through a brief historiographical analysis and through an excursus of the archaeological contexts and related monumental evidence, trying to capture their peculiarities. The third chapter examines the scenographic sanctuary complexes of Hellenistic tradition in the western Mediterranean, and more particularly the examples of this building type in Lazio and the Iberian Peninsula. In the last chapter, some concluding considerations are proposed, in line with what was discussed in the previous chapters, comparing the sanctuary of Atargatis and its monumental specificities with the scenographic complexes and temple typology of the central Italian and Iberian contexts.
