Metal y metalurgia medieval en el Reino de Murcia: estudio de los objetos metálicos de la judería del castillo de Lorca (siglos XIV-XV)

Abstract

El objetivo de esta Tesis Doctoral es el estudio del metal y de su ciclo productivo en el reino de Murcia durante la Baja Edad Media (siglos XIV-XV). Para ello, hemos realizado un análisis histórico-arqueológico que pone de manifiesto la importancia de conocer las diferentes fases de ese ciclo: extracción, distribución, elaboración, venta, utilización y reciclado. Para estudiar el objeto final, u objeto elaborado, hemos analizado las piezas metálicas recuperadas en la judería del castillo de Lorca (Murcia): contexto arqueológico muy bien definido y de especial significación. El motivo del estudio es la escasa información que tenemos, en primer lugar, sobre el metal arqueológico peninsular, y, en segundo lugar, sobre la producción metálica en el reino de Murcia. Los primeros capítulos de la tesis recogen los objetivos, las fuentes empleadas y la metodología seguida, que consistió en el estudio interdisciplinar de las fuentes escritas y arqueológicas. En estos primeros capítulos también se incluye la recopilación y análisis del estado de la cuestión o punto de partida de la investigación. El cuerpo de la Tesis Doctoral se divide en dos bloques: el primero explica las fases del ciclo productivo, especialmente la obtención del metal, su distribución y su trabajo en los talleres de las ciudades de Murcia y Lorca, elegidas como casos de estudio; y el segundo bloque centra su atención en el objeto elaborado, donde se analizan las piezas metálicas recuperadas en la judería bajomedieval del castillo de Lorca. El bloque inicia con una introducción sobre el contexto arqueológico, que quedó como despoblado tras la expulsión de la comunidad judía a finales del siglo XV, y después se centra en el análisis de la distribución espacial de los metales, su clasificación en grupos funcionales (actividad constructiva, textil, agropecuaria, etc.) y su análisis comparado. La Tesis Doctoral finaliza con las conclusiones, donde se confirma la importancia del estudio los objetos metálicos en su contexto y de su ciclo productivo. Por último, la investigación se completa con la bibliografía, los índices y un anexo que contiene un catálogo de piezas de selección y un catálogo general de todo el material metálico analizado.

The aim of this Doctoral Thesis is the study of metal and its production cycle in the kingdom of Murcia during the late Middle Ages (14th-15th centuries). To this end, we have carried out a historical-archaeological analysis that highlights the importance of knowing the different phases of this cycle: mining, distribution, production, sale, use and recycling. In order to study the final object, we have analysed the metal pieces recovered in the Jewish quarter of the castle of Lorca (Murcia): a very well-defined archaeological context of special significance. The reason for this study is the scarce information we have, firstly, on archaeological metalwork on the Iberian Peninsula and, secondly, on metal production in the kingdom of Murcia. The first chapters of the thesis cover the objectives, the sources used, and the methodology followed, which consisted of an interdisciplinary study of written and archaeological sources. These first chapters also include the compilation and analysis of the state of the art or the starting point of the research. The body of the Doctoral Thesis is divided into two blocks: the first explains the phases of the production cycle, especially the obtaining of the metal, its distribution and its work in the workshops of the cities of Murcia and Lorca, chosen as case studies; and the second block focuses its attention on the object produced, where the metal pieces recovered in the late medieval Jewish quarter of Lorca Castle are analysed. The block begins with an introduction to the archaeological context, which remained uninhabited after the expulsion of the Jewish community at the end of the 15th century, and then focuses on the analysis of the spatial distribution of the metals, their classification into functional groups (construction, textile, agricultural and livestock activity, etc.) and their comparative analysis. The Doctoral Thesis ends with the conclusions, which confirm the importance of the study of metal objects in their context and their production cycle. Finally, the research is completed with a bibliography, indexes and an appendix containing a catalogue of selected pieces and a general catalogue of all the metallic material analysed.
