Harmonia Rosales : la realidad histórica a través del sincretismo religioso en The Harvest

Abstract

La artista afrocubana estadounidense Harmonia Rosales centra su obra en la reinterpretación de obras maestras del Renacimiento. En concreto, sus pinturas cuestionan el eurocentrismo blanco que sigue ejerciendo abusos de poder hoy en día hacia minorías desde tiempos del período colonial. El objetivo de este estudio es evidenciar el sincretismo religioso entre la religión cristiana y yoruba presente en la obra The Harvest, realizada por Rosales en el año 2018. En ella, la artista presenta a una mujer negra como protagonista, señalando los abusos ejercidos por el hombre occidental a través de la imposición de la religión cristiana en América. Del mismo modo, también cuestiona el canon de belleza que esta expansión de creencias estableció, proponiendo una idea de santidad, belleza y poder diversa ligada al movimiento feminista negro.

The Afro-Cuban American artist Harmonia Rosales focuses her artwork on the reinterpretation of Renaissance masterpieces. Specifically, her paintings question the white Eurocentrism that continues to exert abuses of power today towards minorities since colonial times. The goal of this study is to evidence the religious syncretism between the Christian and Yoruba religions present in the artwork The Harvest, created by Rosales in 2018. In it, the artist presents a black woman as the protagonist, pointing out the abuses exercised by Western men through the imposition of the Christian religion in America. In the same way, she also questions the canon of beauty that this belief expansion established, proposing a diverse idea of holiness, beauty, and power linked to the black feminist movement.
