El comentario de Broukhusius a Propercio III: edición, traducción y estudio

Abstract

Nuestra Tesis consiste, como se indica en el título, en la edición del Comentario del tercer libro de las Elegías de Propercio realizado por Janus Broukhusius, humanista de la segunda mitad del siglo XVII y primeros años del XVIII. La obra, publicada en 1727, es una ampliación de la primera edición de 1702. El gran acervo cultural de Broukhusius, aplicado al estudio de la elegía, supone un desafío para los lectores contemporáneos; hemos asumido esta empresa tratando de identificar, localizar y explicar todas las referencias a obras, manuscritos y ediciones citados por nuestro erudito, en su afán de explicar, de forma rigurosa y científica, a uno de los poetas latinos de más difícil comprensión por la erudición mitológica, sintaxis condensada y sutil sensibilidad; todas estas dificultades se ven acrecentadas por la controvertida transmisión textual de la obra de Propercio. El estudio de Broukhusius sienta las bases de la crítica textual contemporánea, pues insiste en la identificación rigurosa de los manuscritos, de comentarios anteriores y obras que ha utilizado para determinar el texto genuino de Propercio. El conocimiento profundo de su Comentario proporciona un material riquísimo a los filólogos; por ello, hemos considerado de especial interés acercarlo a los lectores actuales. Hemos traducido el texto, localizando tanto las citas de obras clásicas como las referencias a autores posteriores, que, o bien han estudiado y comentado al elegíaco, o bien lo han evocado en su creación literaria; toda esta información la proporcionamos en notas a la traducción. Las conclusiones de nuestro trabajo afianzan la tesis de que la obra de Broukhusius es novedosa en su tiempo por la defensa del texto properciano basada en los testimonios de los manuscritos concienzudamente identificados; a la vez, enuncia conjeturas para los lugares más controvertidos del mismo, que se han visto refrendadas por los más insignes y actuales estudiosos del poeta al asumirlas en sus ediciones. Nuestro objetivo principal era, pues, dar a conocer la obra de un humanista, que supone un punto culminante y que abre camino a la Filología posterior; para ello, nos propusimos situar a Broukhusius en su tiempo; presentar ediciones y comentarios anteriores, incluso los editados en los albores de la imprenta; editar el Comentario, lo que implica adaptarlo a las normas científicas modernas; localizar autores y obras; así mismo, mostrar la officina de Broukhusius y cómo se sirve de ella; evidenciar su preocupación por el texto y la utilización de manuscritos y, en especial, las aportaciones al texto de Propercio; poner de relieve la mejor, o distinta, comprensión de pasajes controvertidos o en los que no se han detenido demasiado otros estudiosos; y, finalmente, poner al servicio de la Filología una edición moderna, completa, acompañada de una traducción lo más correcta y adecuada posible. Así pues, hemos seguido el método filológico, que consiste en estas pautas: - Lectura de la bibliografía pertinente. - Edición y traducción del texto. - Localización de textos y ediciones antiguas empleadas por el autor. - Valoración de sus criterios atendiendo a los autores modernos. - Elaboración de la bibliografía, índices de autores citados, léxicos contemporáneos al autor y actuales. - Clasificación de materiales y enunciado de temas desarrollados por el autor. - Comentario científico de estos temas que se encuentran en la obra del humanista. En nuestras conclusiones damos cuenta de las lectiones defendidas por Broukhusius; clasificamos los múltiples niveles de estudio de su comentario; identificamos los manuscritos que sostienen sus conjeturas; explicamos la officina o materiales de los que se valió; y reconocemos la influencia del humanista en la crítica posterior.

Our Thesis consists, as stated in the title, in the edition of the Commentary of the third book of the Elegies of Propertius made by Janus Broukhusius, a humanist of the second half of the 17th century and the first years of the 18th. The work, published in 1727, is an extension of the first edition of 1702. The great cultural heritage of Broukhusius, applied to the study of the elegy, poses a challenge for contemporary readers; we have undertaken this task trying to identify, locate and explain all the references to works, manuscripts and editions quoted by our scholar, in his eagerness to explain, in a rigorous and scientific way, one of the most difficult Latin poets to understand due to mythological erudition, condensed syntax and subtle sensitivity; all these difficulties are increased by the controversial textual transmission of the work of Propertius.

Broukhusius's study lays the groundwork for contemporary textual criticism by insisting on rigorous identification of the manuscripts, earlier commentaries, and works he has used to determine the genuine text of Propertius. The profound knowledge of his Commentary provides a rich material to philologists; for this reason, we have considered it of special interest to bring it closer to current readers. We have translated the text, locating both the quotes from classic works and the references to later authors, who have either studied and commented on the elegiac, or have evoked it in their literary creation; all this information is provided in notes to the translation. The conclusions of our work strengthen the thesis that the work of Broukhusius is novel in its time for the defense of the Propertian text based on the testimonies of the conscientiously identified manuscripts; at the same time, he states guess work for the most controversial places of the same, that are they have been endorsed by the most distinguished and current scholars of the poet by assuming them in their editions.

Our main objective was, therefore, to publicize the work of a humanist, who is a culminating point and who paves the way for later Philology; for this, we set out to place Broukhusius in his time; present previous editions and comments, even those published at the dawn of the printing press; edit the Commentary, which means adapting it to modern scientific standards; locate authors and works; likewise, it shows Broukhusius's office and how he uses it; show his concern for the text and the use of manuscripts and, especially, the contributions to the text of Propertius; highlight the best, or different, understanding of controversial passages or in which other scholars have not stopped too much; and, finally, put at the service of Philology a modern, complete edition, accompanied by a translation that is as correct and adequate as possible.

Thus, we have followed the philological method consisting of these guidelines: - Reading of the pertinent bibliography. - Editing and translation of the text. - Location of old texts and editions used by the author. - Assessment of their criteria according to modern authors. - Elaboration of the bibliography, indices of quoted authors, contemporary lexicons to the author and current ones. - Classification of materials and statement of topics developed by the author. - Scientific commentary on these issues found in the work of the humanist.

In our conclusions we give an account of the lessons defended by Broukhusius; we classify the multiple levels of study of your comment; we identify the manuscripts that support their conjectures; we explain the office or materials used; and we acknowledge the influence of the humanist on later criticism.
