Shakespeare's Juliet and Her Representations in Spanish Theatrical Culture (1600s-1890s)

Abstract

La presente tesis doctoral, titulada La Julieta de Shakespeare y su representación en la cultura teatral española (desde el año 1600 hasta finales de la década de 1890), examina la primera fase de la recepción de la trágica historia de los amantes de Verona en la escena española. Nuestro estudio comienza en el siglo XVII con Castelvines y Monteses (1606 – 1612) de Lope de Vega, una tragicomedia que constituye la primera versión teatral de las fuentes italianas de la leyenda. La tesis finaliza en la última década del siglo XIX, con el análisis de las últimas representaciones de Las esposallas de la morta (1878) de Víctor Balaguer, la primera adaptación catalana de Romeo y Julieta, y la última escrita para la escena española de dicha centuria. Nos proponemos tres objetivos con esta investigación doctoral. El primero consiste en examinar en detalle las fuentes medievales italianas de la trágica leyenda de Romeo y Julieta, prestando especial atención a las primeras representaciones de Julieta en cada una de las novelle italianas. El segundo objetivo consiste en proporcionar un análisis pormenorizado de los distintos factores históricos, políticos y socioculturales que jugaron un papel fundamental en la recepción de Romeo y Julieta en España, desde las primeras manifestaciones de la obra en el siglo XVII hasta la última década del siglo XIX. El principal objetivo consiste en examinar las distintas representaciones de Julieta escritas para la escena teatral española desde 1600 hasta 1899. Se ha adoptado un enfoque diacrónico, junto con un análisis comparativo, con el fin de ofrecer una visión completa y detallada de la evolución que experimentó la historia de los amantes de Verona en la escena española a lo largo de tres siglos, centrándonos en las influencias derivadas de otros entornos teatrales europeos. Podemos extraer dos principales conclusiones de nuestra tesis doctoral. La primera es el papel determinante que ejerció Italia en la primera fase de difusión de la historia de los amantes de Verona en el teatro español. De hecho, la tradición italiana fue considerablemente más influyente en el proceso de recepción de la obra en España que el propio Romeo y Julieta de Shakespeare. La aportación más significativa de nuestra investigación consiste en haber demostrado la centralidad que ocupa el personaje de Julieta en casi todas las adaptaciones teatrales de Romeo y Julieta escritas en España entre los años 1600 y 1899, ya que la mayoría de adaptadores reescribieron la obra convirtiendo a Julieta en la auténtica protagonista.

This doctoral thesis entitled Shakespeare’s Juliet and Her Representations in Spanish Theatrical Culture (1600s – 1890s) examines the early phase of the reception of the tragic story of the star-crossed lovers of Verona on the Spanish stage. This study begins in the seventeenth century with Lope de Vega’s Castelvines y Monteses (1606 – 1612), a tragicomedy that constitutes the earliest theatrical rendition of the Italian sources of the tale. The dissertation ends in the last decade of the nineteenth century, exploring the final performances of Víctor Balaguer’s Las esposallas de la morta (1878), the first Catalan adaptation of Romeo and Juliet and the last written for the nineteenth-century Spanish stage. There are three specific aims that this doctoral thesis proposes. The first is to examine in detail the medieval Italian sources of the tragic legend of Romeo and Juliet, devoting special attention to the portrayal of the earliest representations of Juliet in each of these Italian novelle. The second specific aim is to provide a detailed discussion of the historical, political and cultural factors that played a fundamental role in the theatrical reception of Romeo and Juliet in Spain, since its earliest manifestations in the seventeenth century until the final decades of the nineteenth century. The third specific – and most important – aim is to examine the different representations of Juliet written for the Spanish stage since the 1600s until the 1890s. A diachronic examination and a comparative approach have been adopted, so as to offer a complete and detailed picture of the evolution that the story of the lovers of Verona experimented on the Spanish stage throughout three centuries, paying special attention to the influences introduced from other European theatrical milieux. There are two main conclusions derived from this doctoral thesis. The first is the paramount role played by Italy in the early phase of the dissemination of the story of the lovers of Verona on the Spanish stage. In fact, the Italian tradition was considerably more influential than Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in the process of reception. The most important contribution of this thesis is that it has demonstrated the centrality that the character of Juliet occupies in the majority of stage adaptations of Romeo and Juliet written in Spain between 1600 and 1899, as most Spanish adaptors chose to turn Juliet into the absolute protagonist of the play.
