L’étranger, la mort pour révélateurs identitaires dans Traversée de la Mangrove de Maryse Condé

Abstract

Novela del regreso a Guadalupe de Maryse Condé, Traversée de la Mangrove traza los rasgos de una aldea aislada perturbada por la muerte de Francis Sancher, un extranjero venido de un lugar indefinido, que reúne a la población en un velatorio donde los asistentes dejan vagar sus pensamientos, revelan secretos, se cuestionan sobre su vida y, poco a poco, desvelan los misterios del difunto. A partir de esa polifonía, donde aparece la influencia de Faulkner y una intertextualidad caribeña, Maryse Condé establece una reflexión sobre la identidad antillana y las diversas corrientes que han recorrido su literatura (Negridud, Antillanidad, Creoli-dad). Afirma así su independencia, su desapego frente a las teorías, para concentrarse en lo humano. Capta así el carácter específico de su isla, plural e hibrida, modernizando el concepto de rizoma defendido por Glissant, con una lengua francesa que dice haber “canibalizado” para expresar las contradicciones, las errancias y los errores de una tierra enfrentada a lo desconocido y ávida de ideales.

A novel about Maryse Condé’s return to Gua-deloupe, in which she paints the picture of an isolated village disturbed by the death of Francis Sancher, an outsider coming from an undefined elsewhere, and who brings the population together in a funeral wake during which the participants let their thoughts wander, reveal secrets and question their own lives and gradually reveal the secrets of the deceased. From this polyphony in which one can detect the influence of Faulkner and a Caribbean intertextuality, Maryse Condé sets out a reflection on the Antilles identity and the different currents present in its literature (Negritude, Antillanity and Creolity) and thus affirms her indepen-dence, her detachment from theories in order to concentrate on the human. She thus captures the specific character of her island, both composite and hybrid, by renewing the concept of the rhizome defended by Glissant in a French language, which she herself admits to having “cannibalised” to express the contradictions, the errancies and the errors of a land confronted by the unknown and in search of ideals
