María (1867), by Jorge Isaacs, and Cumandá, o un drama entre salvajes (1877), by Juan León Mera, are the sentimental dramas of Hispanic-American romanticism that are most representative of their countries, Colombia and Ecuador respectively. In them, love shares a leading role with the racial question and nature, and can also be read as works of national formation of the new republics. Our objective will be to analyze and compare these novels, focusing on one aspect: the voice they have and the representation that is constructed of the female characters that pass through them. It is concluded that in an extreme way the protagonists, who give title to the novels, together with the female characters of their families, embody the Christian virtues that the new states should have, as well as urge the real women of the nation to imitate them (purity , self-denial, sacrifice…). But there is another group of women who, although they do not have a leading role in the stories, and crossed by other factors that infers more subalternity, ethnicity (indigenous and blacks) and social class, come to be exotic, in how much they come close to those Christian ideals, or demonized, being awarded, from a socially accepted double standard, characteristics that would contravene that “order” that it is intended to establish. |
