Description
Abstract
Corpora are an undoubtedly valuable tool in order to enhance communication research. In this regard, the creation of corpora paves the way for further observing the characteristics of interpreter-mediated encounters, providing real material, a precious resource for both research and training. Nonetheless, interpreting studies working with corpora are still limited, especially, in dialogue interpreting. From this viewpoint, we ponder the rationale behind this still slow development of corpus-driven studies in our field, thus analysing the challenges posed by the configuration of corpora. Namely, we focus on the first two stages of this process: the retrieval and the processing of the information. We understand these phases are the point of departure to allow for the creation of corpora gathering the communication that occurs in interpreter-mediated encounters. To analyse these stages, we identify the difficulties of accessing the meeting in the different settings in which this interpretation takes place, as well as the absence of conventions in our field with regard to the transcription of such communication, a reality that leads us to highlight the significance of establishing an efficient system to transcribe the dialogue. To this end, we conduct a comprehensive literature review and present a proposal in which we approach the systematic transcript of the interpretermediated encounter, transcripts that will become corpora, favouring research on dialogue interpreting.
