    Reliability, validity, and maturation-related differences of frontal and sagittal plane landing kinematic measures during drop jump and tuck jump screening tests in male youth soccer players

    Objectives: To determine the inter-rater and intra-rater reliability of frontal and sagittal plane landing kinematic measures during drop jump (DVJ) and tuck jump (TJA) tasks in male youth soccer players, to assess the concurrent validity between DVJ and TJA tests, and to evaluate the ability of both tasks to detect differences between players’ stage of maturation. Design: Cross-sectional study. Participants: 223 male youth soccer players. Main outcome measures: Frontal plane knee projection angles (FPPA), and hip (HF), knee (KF) and ankle (AF) flexion angles at initial contact (IC) and peak flexion (PF) (i.e., the deepest landing position) in the sagittal plane were assessed. Results: Good-to-excellent inter- and intra-rater reliability (ICC > 0.75; TEMST < 0.3; CVTE < 5%) for the FPPA, HF and KF during DVJ and TJA tasks were found. A low concurrent validity between DVJ and TJA measures was reported. Differences by maturity status (BF10 > 10; error < 10; d > 0.6) were only identified for the TJA. Pre-PHV group reported higher FPPA, HF-IC, HF-PF, and KF-IC values, as well as lower AF-IC than post-PHV. Pre-PHV also displayed greater HF-IC and KF-IC than circa-PHV group. Conclusions: Although both tests are reliable, the TJA might be viewed as a more informative tool given it shows greater FPPA and can also detect differences by maturity status.

    Procedimientos de exploración y valores de referencia del rango de movimiento de la abducción de la cadera en deportistas. ¿Una herramienta en la prevención de lesiones?

    El rango de movimiento limitado de la abducción de la cadera por una menor extensibilidad o cortedad de los aductores predispone a ciertas lesiones deportivas. Las pruebas angulares de la Abducción de la Cadera con Pierna Recta y la Abducción de la Cadera en Flexión deben incluirse en cualquier evaluación deportiva músculo-esquelética. La utilización de ambas pruebas exploratorias permitirá evaluar especificamente la extensibilidad aductora. Para la medición del rango será necesario el uso de un goniómetro de rama larga y de un inclinómetro con varilla telescópica. De manera general, se han encontrado elevados valores de fiabilidad relativa y absoluta en el test ABPR. Por el contrario, no se han encontrado estudios que analicen la fiabilidad del test ABF

    Efecto del nivel de experiencia clínica del examinador sobre la validez de criterio y fiabilidad inter-sesión de cinco medidas del rango de movimiento de la flexión dorsal del tobillo

    El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar el efecto que el diferente grado de experiencia del examinador tiene sobre la validez de criterio y fiabilidad inter-sesión de las medidas de rango de movimiento de la flexión dorsal del tobillo (ROMFDT) obtenidas en las pruebas: flexión dorsal del tobillo pasiva en decúbito prono y rodilla flexionada (FDPAS), zancada con inclinómetro (FDZAN-INC) y cinta métrica (FDZAN-MET), zancada modificada con taburete (FDZAN-TAB) y zancada modificada con cajón (FDZAN-CAJ). Un total de 17 deportistas recreativos completaron este estudio. Cada participante fue evaluado por dos examinadores con distinto nivel de experiencia (experto y novel) del ROMFDT empleando 5 pruebas exploratorias diferentes en dos sesiones distintas. Los resultados muestran bajos valores de validez para el examinador novel en todas las pruebas de valoración del ROMFDT excepto en la prueba FDZAN-INC (error típico de la estimación estandarizado = 0,5 [pequeño]; Pearson = 0,85 [moderado]; kappa = 0,74 [buena]). El examinador experto presentó niveles altos de fiabilidad inter-sesión en las pruebas FDZAN-INC, FDZAN-MET y FDZAN-CAJ y valores aceptables en las pruebas FDPAS y FDZAN-TAB. El examinador novel obtuvo valores aceptables de fiabilidad en toda las pruebas de valoración excepto en la prueba FDPAS, que fueron considerados como no aceptables. Por lo tanto, se recomienda que tanto los examinadores expertos como noveles utilicen la prueba FDZAN-INC para: (a) identificar a personas con restringida o normal movilidad de la flexión dorsal del tobillo; y (b) monitorizar la eficacia de los programas de intervención aplicados en caso de ser necesarios.

    A Meta-Analysis of the Reliability of Four Field-Based Trunk Extension Endurance Tests

    This meta-analysis aimed to estimate the inter- and intra-tester reliability of endurance measures obtained through trunk extension field-based tests and to explore the influence of the moderators on the reliability estimates. The reliability induction rate of trunk extension endurance measures was also calculated. A systematic search was conducted using various databases, and subsequently 28 studies were selected that reported intraclass correlation coefficients for trunk extension endurance measures. Separate meta-analyses were conducted using a random-effects model. When possible, analyses of potential moderator variables were carried out. The inter-tester average reliability of the endurance measure obtained from the Biering-Sorensen test was intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC)= 0.94. The intra-session reliability estimates of the endurance measures recorded using the Biering-Sorensen test, the prone isometric chest raise test, and the prone double straight-leg test were ICC= 0.88, 0.90, and 0.86, respectively. The inter-session average reliability of the endurance measures from the Biering-Sorensen test, the prone isometric chest raise test, and the dynamic extensor endurance test were ICC= 0.88, 0.95, and 0.99, respectively. However, due to the limited evidence available, the reliability estimates of the measures obtained through the prone isometric chest raise, prone double straight-leg, and dynamic extensor endurance tests should be considered with a degree of caution. Position control instruments, tools, and familiarization session demonstrated a statistical association with the inter-session reliability of the Biering-Sorensen test. The reliability induction rate was 72.8%. Only the trunk extension endurance measure obtained through the Biering-Sorensen test presented sufficient scientific evidence in terms of reliability to justify its use for research and practical purposes.

    Training effects of the FIFA 11+ Kids on physical performance in youth football players: a randomized control trial

    Objective: To analyze the training effects of the FIFA 11+ Kids on several parameters of physical performance in male youth football players. Materials and methods: Twenty-three youth players were randomized within each team into two groups (control vs. intervention). The intervention group performed the FIFA 11+ Kids programme 2 times a week for 4 weeks; the control groups completed their normal warm-up routines. Thirteen physical performance measures {range of motion (hip, knee, and ankle joints), dynamic postural control (measured throughout the Y balance test), 20 m sprint time, slalom dribble with a ball, agility, vertical jumping height [counter movement jump (CMJ) and drop jump (DJ)], horizontal jump distance, accuracy when volleying a ball [measured throughout the Wall Volley test]} were assessed. All physical performance parameters were compared via magnitude-based inference analysis. Results: Significant between-group differences in favor of the FIFA 11+ players were found for dynamic postural control {anterior [mean and 90% confidence intervals (CI) = 1 cm, from −1.6 to 3.5 cm] and posteromedial (mean and 90% CI = 5.1 cm, from −1.8 to 12 cm) and posterolateral (mean and 90% CI = 4.8 cm, from 0.6 to 9.0 cm) distances}, agility run (mean and 90% CI = 0.5 s, from −0.9 to 0 s), vertical jump height [CMJ (mean and 90% CI = 3.1 cm, from 0.2 to 6.1 cm) and DJ (mean and 90% CI = 1.7 cm, from −0.5 to 3.9 cm)], and horizontal jump distance (mean and 90% CI = 2.5 cm, from −8 to 15 cm). The control groups showed better performance in 20 m sprint time (mean and 90% CI = −0.05 s, from −0.11 to 0.07) and wall volley tests (mean and 90% CI = 0.2, from −0.2 to 0.6) compared to the intervention group. Conclusion: The main findings of this study suggest that just 4 weeks of implementation of the FIFA 11+ Kids produces improved physical performance compared with traditional warm-up routines in youth soccer players.

    Prediction of ACL-tear by lower limbs muscle strength and flexibility: a prospective cohort study in 95 female soccer players

    The aims of the study were to build models using logistic regression analysis of flexibility and strength tests to prospectively predict risk factors for anterior cruciate ligament tear (ACL-tear) in female soccer (FS) players, and to determine training cut-off for risk factors of the predictive model built. A prospective cohort study of 95 female players (aged 14–33 years) was conducted. Age, anthropometric data, soccer history, lower limb range of motion (ROM) and hip maximal isometric strength (MIS) were measured. At the prospective follow-up after 12 months, 7.4% of the players had developed an ACL-tear. The model showed a significant relationship (χ2(93) = 30.531, p < 0.001) between the ACL-tear and the predictor variables (leg length, HAD-NH [hip adduction] MIS, asymmetric ROM [ankle dorsiflexion with knee extended (AD-KE) and with knee flexed (AD-KF), and HE (hip extension)], hip ROM [HIR (internal rotation) and HAB (abduction)]). The Akaike Information Criteria (AIC) and Bayesian Information Criteria (BIC) for model fit were 30.24 and 51.79, respectively. The value R2 showed good model fit, 76.5% for Nagelkerke´s R2, 71.4% for McFadden´s R2 and 67.5% for Tjur´s R2. For the screening test, cut-off for leg length of ≥0.40 m, for HIR ROM of ≤44º and for asymmetry of HE ROM of ≥5° were set, which have an acceptable (AUC ≥ 0.755) discriminatory ability for the development of ACL-tear.
