Association between Covid-19 sources of information, beliefs, and vaccination rates: an EU-wide survey.
(Oxford University Press, 2023-07-14) Moreno Llamas, Antonio; Devine, Emily Beth; Cruz Sánchez, Ernesto de la; Mendiola Olivares, Jaime; García Mayor, Jesús; Torres Cantero, Alberto Manuel; Ciencias Sociosanitarias
Background: Misinformation hampers vaccine uptake. The European Union (EU) employed a coordinated effort to curb misinformation during the Covid-19 pandemic. In this context, we investigated relationships between sources of information, vaccine safety/effectiveness, satisfaction with government vaccination strategy, and vaccination intent. Methods: We used cross-sectional survey data (May 2021) from Flash Eurobarometer 494, a populationadjusted dataset comprised of a representative sample of those  15 years from 27 EU nations. We employed a latent class analysis to create clusters of information sources as the independent variable and beliefs in vaccine safety/efficacy, satisfaction with government vaccination strategy, and vaccine intent as four outcome variables. We first estimated the association between source clusters and each of the first three outcomes separately. Then, using these three as intermediate variables, we employed structural equation modeling to estimate the relationship between sources and vaccine intent. We adjusted for individual and country-level variables. Results: Among 23 012 respondents, four clusters of information sources emerged: (1) national authorities/health professionals (n¼9602; 42%), (2) mostly health professionals (6184; 27%), (3) mixed (n¼1705; 17%) and (4) social media/family/ friends (n¼5524; 24%). Using cluster (3) as the referent, we found decreasing odds of beliefs in vaccine safety/effectiveness, satisfaction and vaccine intent across clusters (1), (2) and (4), respectively. Demographics played a role. Conclusion: In the context of the Covid pandemic, these results provide the first EU-wide estimates of the association between sources of information about vaccine safety/effectiveness, satisfaction and vaccine intent. The coordinated approach promulgated by the EU to minimize misinformation provides a model for managing future pandemics.

Does the anogenital distance change across pregnancy?
(Elsevier, 2020-05-25) Sánchez Ferrer, María Luisa; Arense Gonzalo, Julián Jesús; Prieto Sánchez, María Teresa; Alfosea-Marhuenda, Emilia; Gómez-Carrascosa, Inmaculada; Iniesta, Miguel A.; Mendiola Olivares, Jaime; Torres Cantero, Alberto Manuel; Ciencias Sociosanitarias; Facultad de Farmacia
Research question: Does the length of the anogenital distance (AGD), an anthropometric biomarker of fetal androgen exposure, change across pregnancy? It has been suggested that AGD remains stable during adulthood with no changes across the menstrual cycle. No studies, however, have been carried out during pregnancy, during which women are exposed to important hormonal and anthropometric variations. Design: A cohort study of 186 singleton pregnant women recruited in the first trimester of pregnancy. Measurements from the anterior clitoral surface to the upper verge of the anus (AGDAC), and from the posterior fourchette to the upper verge of the anus (AGDAF) and body mass index (BMI) were obtained in each trimester. Generalized linear model for repeated measures was carried out to assess differences in AGDs and BMI across the three trimesters of the pregnancy. Results: In crude analyses, AGDAC was progressively and significantly longer as the pregnancy developed (first trimester: 87.69 ± 13.14mm; second trimester: 89.69 ± 13.47mm; third trimester: 91.95 ± 13.25 mm; P < 0.001), whereas AGDAF did not significantly change throughout pregnancy (first trimester: 28.37 ± 6.94 mm; second trimester: 28.09 ± 7.66 mm; third trimester: 28.94 ± 6.7 mm). In the multivariable mixed-effect models for fixed effect (trimester) and time-covariate (BMI), AGDs did not show significant associations with trimesters of pregnancy when BMI was included in the model. Conclusions: Our results suggest that AGDAF and AGDAC, when adjusted by BMI, do not change throughout gestation despite maternal anthropometric variations during pregnancy. AGDAF may be a meaningful measurement at any time during pregnancy without considering BMI. Therefore, maternal AGDAF may be used as a prenatal biomarker of the mother's in-uteru hormonal exposure even during pregnancy.

Is maternal use of Paracetamol during pregnancy associated with anogenital distance in male newborns? The results from the NELA Birth Cohort
(MDPI, 2021-06-11) Navarro Lafuente, Fuensanta; Arense Gonzalo, Julián Jesús; Adoamnei, Evdochia; Prieto Sánchez, María Teresa; Sánchez Ferrer, María Luisa; García-Marcos Álvarez, Luis Vicente; Morales Bartolomé, Eva; Mendiola Olivares, Jaime; Torres Cantero, Alberto Manuel; Ciencias Sociosanitarias
Paracetamol is the one of the most commonly used medications during pregnancy. However, its potential antiandrogenic effect has been suggested. The objective of this study was to evaluate associations between maternal paracetamol use during pregnancy and anogenital distance (AGD) in male newborns from a Spanish birth cohort. The study included two hundred and seventy-seven mother-male child pairs with self-reported paracetamol use and frequency during each trimester of pregnancy. AGD measurements were taken employing standardized methods. The associations between maternal paracetamol use and AGD measures were evaluated using linear regression models, adjusting for potential confounders and covariates. Overall, 61.7% of pregnant women consumed paracetamol at any time of pregnancy with an average of 9.43 (SD = 15.33) days throughout pregnancy. No associations between the maternal use of paracetamol or its frequency and AGD measures among different trimesters or during the whole pregnancy were found in the adjusted final models. A non-differential misclassification error may have occurred—the recall of paracetamol intake independent of AGD measurements—introducing bias towards the null hypothesis. Nevertheless, the current evidence suggests that paracetamol might have a potential antiandrogenic effect especially in the early stages of fetal development. Thus, it would be highly recommendable to pursue further studies to elucidate the potential effects of paracetamol in human perinatal health and its use among pregnant women.

The research was developed using qualitative methodology, carrying out twenty five in-depth interviews with adult females, residents of the Murcia region, of Spanish nationality, who have been victims of domestic abuse at the hands of a partner, and who have agreed to participate. The overall objective was to understand the process of leaving the abusive relationship. The specific objectives were: 1) To identify the attitudes and aims of the women in the process, 2) To identify attitudes of the people close to her, 3) Identify which institutions or professionals took part in the process and how this intervention contributed to the same. The WHO recommendations on ethics and safety for research on violence against women have been taken into account. The interviews were collected with prior informed consent. At the time of interview, the ages of the women ranged from 19 to 64 years of age. Twenty three of the women had separated from their aggressors, while two of them maintained the affected relationship. The majority had offspring. The sample ranged from women who had not completed compulsory education to others who were university graduates. A small number were housewives and the majority were also in paid employment. Some lived in urban areas and others in rural. The abuser had been the husband in the majority of cases, in others it was a live-in partner and in four cases it was the victim’s boyfriend. The abused women always attempted to avoid the aggressions of their partner but because of their learned gender roles the answers they gave were never effective. Some of the women attempted suicide as a consequence of the abuse. All of the interviewed women eventually found themselves in a dangerous situation and lost faith in the relationship, which is why they decided to separate from their partner. Fear, the mourning of their own traditional ideals, the opinion of relatives and friends, the religious community, in-laws, and young children were major obstacles to the process. Recognizing negative changes in themselves, building relationships with people who appreciate them, learning from their experiences, putting boundaries on others, children close to adolescence age, and seeking professional help were factors that contributed to the breakdown of the couple. The immediate family as well as the in-laws were fundamental for all of the women interviewed, as much for what they did, as for what they did not do. Many of them hid it from their immediate family, so they could not be of support to them before the breakdown of the couple. However, they did provide a great amount of support during the separation and in the aftermath, a dangerous time for women. The involvement of the in-law family, when there, was almost always negative. Also the people in the environment, their opinions and actions proved decisive. If their opinion was in favour of maintaining the relationship, the woman prolonged her silence and suffering, increasing the isolation and blame. If her relatives are critical of the abuse, it allows her become aware of her situation sooner, decreases guilt, gives recognition as a person with self worth and who deserves to be believed. Most women report having had problems with public services, while recognizing that they need to speak with some professional. When they are the ones who decide which service to use and when, the services prove very useful. Leaving the abusive relationship involves a change in the woman, a change in the relationship with oneself, with others, that is, a disidentification with the hegemonic role of gender. The women studied understand, at the end of the process, the strategy of the abuser and that domestic violence was the cause of their hardship.

Salivary Ferritin Changes in Patients with COVID-19
(MDPI, 2021-12-21) Franco Martínez, Lorena; Cerón, José J.; Vicente Romero, Maria R.; Bernal, Enrique; Tecles, Fernando; Sánchez Resalt, Cristina; Martínez, Mónica; Tvarijonaviciute, Asta; Martínez Subiela, Silvia; Torres Cantero, Alberto Manuel; Medicina y Cirugía Animal; Tchounwou, Paul B.
High ferritin serum levels can be found in patients with macrophage activation syndrome, and increased serum ferritin due to cytokine storm have been reported in severe COVID-19 patients. Saliva is being increasingly used in COVID-19 tests as a diagnostic sample for virus detection and quantification. This study aimed to evaluate the possible changes in ferritin in saliva in COVID-19 patients. In addition, the effects of different inactivation SARS-CoV-2 treatments in ferritin measurements in saliva, the correlation between ferritin in saliva and serum, and the possible effects of correction of ferritin values by total protein were assessed. Ferritin was measured in saliva from healthy (n = 30) and COVID-19 (n = 65) patients with severe, (n = 18) or mild (n = 47) disease, depending on the need for nasal flow oxygen or assisted respiration. Ferritin was also measured in paired serum and saliva samples (n = 32) from healthy and COVID-19 patients. The evaluated inactivation protocols did not affect the assay’s results except the addition of 0.5% SDS. Significantly higher ferritin was found in the saliva of COVID-19 patients (median; 25–75th percentile) (27.75; 9.77–52.2 µg/L), compared with healthy controls (4.21; 2.6–8.08 µg/L). Individuals with severe COVID-19 showed higher ferritin values in saliva (48.7; 18.7–53.9) than mild ones (15.5; 5.28–41.3 µg/L). Significant correlation (r = 0.425; p < 0.001) was found between serum and saliva in ferritin. Ferritin levels were higher in COVID-19 patients in serum and saliva, and the highest values were found in those patients presenting severe symptomatology. In conclusion, ferritin in saliva has the potential to be a biomarker to evaluate severity in patients with COVID-19.
