The health, social, economic and political consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic invite us to reflect on the nature of social change. This introduction foregrounds how the different chapters in this volume reject the narrative of exceptionalism, emphasise the capacity of public institutions to respond to the crisis in spite of decades of neglect and point to the importance of growing socio-political polarisation. It also provides a brief presentation of each of the chapters, drawing attention to the way that some address the socio-political context of the pandemic while others explore how it has affected different spheres of social life.
