- PublicationRestricted2030 Agenda of sustainable transport: Can current progress lead towards carbon neutrality?(Elsevier, 2023-09) Khurshid, Adnan; Khan, Khalid; Cifuentes Faura, Javier; Ciencia Política, Antropología Social y Hacienda Pública; Facultad de Economía y EmpresaThe sustainable development goal of combating climate change highlights the importance of the transportation sector. This study analyzes the impact of eco-innovations in transportation along with traffic-TRF (road, rail, air), infrastructure development, green finances, trade globalization on demand, transport emissions, and greenhouse gas emissions from 1994 to 2020 in EU25 economies. Furthermore, the policy impact of innovation and taxes and renewables are estimated using their interactions. We employed second-generation approaches, PMG-ARDL, Panel Corrected Standard Errors (PCSE) and Granger causality. The results reveal that green transport neutralizes pollutant emissions, and traffic increases emissions by 17.5%, while green taxes limit them to 15.3% and 39.3% in the long and short run. Green taxes are a short-run tool; however, long-run sustainable targets depend on green transport, renewables, and R&D. European economies must revisit their transport and environmental policies, as current progress may not lead toward sustainable transportation.
- PublicationOpen AccessA global probabilistic dataset for monitoring meteorological droughts(American Meteorological Society, 2020-10-09) Jerez Rodríguez, Sonia; Turco, Marco; Donat, Markus G.; Toreti, Andrea; Vicente-Serrano, Sergio M.; Doblas-Reyes, Francisco J.; FísicaAccurate and timely drought information is essential to move from postcrisis to preimpact drought-risk management. A number of drought datasets are already available. They cover the last three decades and provide data in near–real time (using different sources), but they are all “deterministic” (i.e., single realization), and input and output data partly differ between them. Here we first evaluate the quality of long-term and continuous climate data for timely meteorological drought monitoring considering the standardized precipitation index. Then, by applying an ensemble approach, mimicking weather/climate prediction studies, we develop Drought Probabilistic (DROP), a new global land gridded dataset, in which an ensemble of observation-based datasets is used to obtain the best near-real-time estimate together with its associated uncertainty. This approach makes the most of the available information and brings it to the end users. The highquality and probabilistic information provided by DROP is useful for monitoring applications, and may help to develop global policy decisions on adaptation priorities in alleviating drought impacts, especially in countries where meteorological monitoring is still challenging

---------------------------
- PublicationRestrictedCan green finance policy reduce corporate carbon emissions? Evidence from a quasi-natural experiment in China(Elsevier, 2024-12-04) Liu, Xiaoqian; Wan, Chang’an; Wan, Long; Cifuentes Faura, Javier; Ciencia Política, Antropología Social y Hacienda Pública; Facultad de Economía y EmpresaThe construction of pilot zones for green finance reform and innovation (PZGFRI) is China's regional exploration aimed at increasing financial support for green transformation and development. However, its impact on corporate carbon emission governance is uncertain. This paper examines the impact of the PZGFRI policy on corporate carbon emissions (CCEs) and its mechanisms based on the difference-in-differences model. The results indicate that this PZGFRI policy notably reduces the carbon emissions of enterprises in the pilot regions. Mechanism analysis reveals that this green finance policy reduces CCEs via alleviating corporate financing constraints, promoting corporate green innovation and corporate ESG performance. Heterogeneity results show that this negative impact is more pronounced for non-SOEs than SOEs. Furthermore, the PZGFRI policy dramatically reduces the carbon emissions of enterprises with short-sighted managers, while having insignificant performance on those with long-sighted management. Moreover, carbon reduction effect is notable for high-carbon industry enterprises, and this impact is insignificant for non-high carbon emission industry enterprises. Additionally, this policy has a prominent carbon reduction influence on enterprises in eastern and central regions, but its effect is minimal for those in western regions. This paper provides empirical evidence for other countries to implement green finance policies to promote low-carbon transformation development.

- PublicationRestrictedDynamic connectedness among climate change index, green financial assets and renewable energy markets: Novel evidence from sustainable development perspective(Elsevier Ltd, 2023-03-01) Balsalobre Lorente, Daniel; Mohammed, Kamel Si; Cifuentes Faura, Javier; Shahzad, Umer; Ciencia Política, Antropología Social y Hacienda PúblicaThis paper investigates the connectedness among the climate change index, green financial assets, renewable energy markets, and geopolitical risk index from June 1, 2012 to June 13, 2022, using Quantile Vector Autoregressive (QVAR) and wavelet coherence (WC). The Total connectedness index (TCI) varies as long as the highest TCI originates in the upper quantile. We also note that the higher TCI decreases after the second wave of COVID-19 and increases during the first 100 days of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Moreover, the results show that Geopolitical risk (GPR) is a net transmitter of the climate change index during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The green bond and clean energy markets are negatively connected to the GPR at extreme 10 th and 90 th quantiles. The wavelet coherence confirms the QVAR results that the climate change market can be a safe haven against GPR during the Russian invasion. The climate change index, green financial assets, and clean energy are strong influencers in the financial markets and are vital to international peace, reducing geopolitical risk. The study reports a few novel conclusions and implications from a sustainable development perspective.
- PublicationOpen AccessEconomic valuation of allotment gardens in peri-urban degraded agroecosystems: the role of citizens’ preferences in spatial planning(Elsevier, 2021-02-15) Albaladejo García, José Antonio; Alcon, Francisco; Martínez Paz, José Miguel; Economía Aplicada; Facultad de Economía y EmpresaAllotment gardens (AGs), one of the basic types of urban gardening, provide goods and services to the urban population beyond food supply. Therefore, the efficient planning and management of AGs must take into account both the social welfare provided by the ecosystem services (ES) associated with these spaces and spatial considerations. The distance of the AGs from the citizens, their accessibility and the presence of substitutes are aspects that have not been studied extensively in the scientific literature. In this context, this paper evaluates the creation of AGs in a peri-urban degraded agroecosystem in Murcia (SE-Spain). To this end, the values of ES are quantified economically, as are the influences of the socio-economic and spatial characteristics. A survey was undertaken on a representative sample of households in Murcia city, from which the willingness to pay (WTP) for owning an AG and the factors influencing the valuation were determined. The results indicate that provisioning services are the ES valued most highly, followed by regulating and cultural ES. The valuation of the project for the whole population is 5.4 €/household/month, with a WTP of 17.2 €/household/month for owning an AG plot. Multivariate analysis showed the importance of ES and spatial factors in this valuation. This WTP spatial study shows the existence of local patterns to be considered in the evaluation of new AGs location alternatives. These results will be useful to urban planners in their decision making.
- PublicationOpen AccessEffect of sow body weight at first service on body status and performance during first parity and lifetime(MDPI, 2022-12-02) Carrión López, María José; Orengo Femenia, Juan; Madrid Sánchez, Josefa; Vargas, Antonio; Martínez Miró, Silvia; Producción AnimalIn this retrospective study, we aimed to assess the effect of body weight (BW) at first service on body status development and sow performance during first parity and lifetime efficiency. A total of 360 DanBred gilts were used, which we categorized into three groups according to their BW: (1) Small sows (<135 kg BW; n = 108); (2) Medium sows (135–150 kg BW; n = 155); (3) Large sows (>150 kg BW; n = 63). We studied the gilts from first insemination to first weaning, and then monitored until culling. Sow body status, litter size and weight, farrowing rate, weaning-to-conception interval, lifetime performance, and hormones linked to metabolism were recorded. Sows in the Small group had the lowest body weight, backfat thickness, and loin depth during gestation. Moreover, they had the smallest number of total piglets born and longest weaning-to-conception interval at first parity. The Small sows also had, on average, one less piglet born during their productive life, and they tended to have a higher culling rate over three parities. For immunoglobulins, insulin, cortisol, and IGF-I levels, no differences were found. In conclusion, achieving optimal body weight at first service is essential for maximizing the sow’s lifetime performance.
- PublicationOpen AccessEffects of air pollution on dementia over Europe for present and future climate change scenarios(Elsevier, 2022-03) Guzmán, Patricia; Tarín Carrasco, Patricia; Morales-Suárez-Varela, María; Jiménez Guerrero, Pedro; FísicaThe scientific literature is scarce when referring to the influence of atmospheric pollutants on neurodegenerative diseases for present and future climate change scenarios. In this sense, this contribution evaluates the incidence of dementia (Alzheimer's disease, AD, and dementia from unspecified cause, DU) occurring in Europe associated with the exposure to air pollution (essentially NO2 and PM2.5) for the present climatic period (1991–2010) and for a future climate change scenario (RCP8.5, 2031–2050). The GEMM methodology has been applied to air pollution simulations using the chemistry/climate regional model WRF-Chem. Present population data were obtained from NASA's Center for Socioeconomic Data and Applications (SEDAC); while future population projections for the year 2050 were derived from the United Nations (UN) Department of Economic and Social Affairs-Population Dynamics. Overall, the estimated incidence rate (cases per year) of AD and DU associated with exposure to air pollution over Europe is 498,000 [95% confidence interval (95% CI) 348,600–647,400] and 314,000 (95% CI 257,500-401,900), respectively. An important increase in the future incidence rate is projected (around 72% for both types of dementia) when considering the effect of climate change together with the foreseen changes in the future population, because of the expected aging of European population. The climate penalty (impacts of future climate change alone on air quality) has a limited effect on the total changes of dementia (approx. 0.5%), because the large increase in the incidence rate over southern Europe is offset by its decrease over more northern countries, favored by an improvement of air pollution caused by the projected enhancement of rainfall.
- PublicationOpen AccessEnergy efficiency in software: a case study on sustainability in personal health records(Elsevier, 2021-02-01) García Berná, José Alberto; Fernández Alemán, José Luis; Carrillo de Gea, Juan Manuel; Toval Álvarez, Jose Ambrosio; Mancebo, Javier; Calero, Coral; García, Félix; Informática y SistemasA personal health record is an eHealth technology in which users can observe their progress over time for a given condition. A research gap was identified in the literature concerning the study of the amount of energy that these systems need for their operation, and the energy efficiency that may be attained depending on their design. After the selection of five representative personal health records, a total of 20 tasks commonly done, and based on previous work, were performed with regard to two proposed scenarios, namely patient use and health personnel usage. The power consumption of the main components of a host machine was measured during the performance of the proposed duties. To that end, a hardware tool called the Energy Efficiency Tester was employed. The data collected were analyzed statistically, and significant differences were found in the respective consumption of the display (χ2 (4) = 23.782, p = 0.000), the processor (χ2 (4) = 29.018, p = 0.000) and the whole PC (χ2 (4) = 28.582, p = 0.000). For all of these components, NoMoreClipBoard was the personal health record that required the least energy (57.699 W for the display, 3.162 W for the processor and 181.113 W for the whole PC). A total of two strong correlations were found in the energy consumption between the hard disk and the graphics card (r = 0.791, p < 0.001), and the processor and the PC (r = 0.950, p < 0.001). Some features generated special amounts of power consumption, such as the news wall found on PatientsLikeMe, or the use of load icons that had an impact on most PC components. In addition, an in-depth analysis of the user interfaces was performed. A discussion was carried out on the design of the user interfaces, also taking into account recommendations drawn from the literature, checking for their implementation in the personal health records selected. With the aim of promoting sustainability among software developers, a best practice guideline on sustainable software design was proposed. Basic sustainability recommendations were collected for professionals to consider when developing a software system in general, and a personal health record in particular.
- PublicationRestrictedEvaluating the relationship between income inequality, renewable energy and energy poverty in the V4 countries(Elsevier, 2024-06-20) Simionescu, Mihaela; Cifuentes Faura, Javier; Ciencia Política, Antropología Social y Hacienda Pública; Facultad de Economía y EmpresaThe European Union has prioritized addressing energy poverty, as outlined in the "Clean Energy for all Europeans Package". The recent international context dominated by the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia war in Ukraine, have exacerbated this issue because of the substantial energy prices growth. Since eradicating energy poverty necessitates long-term policy implementation, the primary objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of income inequality and other economic and social factors (output per capita, renewable energy use) on energy poverty as measured by three indicators (total utility bill arrears, utility bill arrears for households with dependent children, population unable to maintain adequate). The findings based on mean group estimators for the V4 (Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia) countries from 2005 to 2022 suggest that income inequality, proxied by the Gini index, exacerbates energy poverty. However, sustainable economic growth has the potential to alleviate energy poverty. Policy recommendations include reducing income inequality, reforming renewable energy policies, to encourage the development of renewable energy sector and green industries.
- PublicationRestrictedGovernment environmental attention and carbon emissions governance: Firm-level evidence from China(Elsevier Ltd, 2023-08-01) Liu, Xiaoqian; Cifuentes Faura, Javier; Zhao, Shikuan; Wang, Long; Ciencia Política, Antropología Social y Hacienda Pública; Facultad de Economía y EmpresaClimate change induced by carbon emissions has received extensive global attention. However, with the ever-increasing environmental attention from governments, whether firms, as main contributors to carbon emissions, have responded to the government’s call to achieve carbon abatement target is uncertain. To answer this question, we manually collected urban government work reports from 2007-2016 and extracted environment-related textual content to quantify government environmental attention (GEA). Employing firms’ carbon emission data from National Tax Survey Database (NTSD), this paper explores the impact of GEA on firms’ carbon emissions governance. We observe that the increase in GEA cuts firms’ carbon emissions. The results remain solid after using the instrumental variable method to alleviate endogeneity problems. The mechanism analysis reveals that GEA reduces firms’ carbon emissions via three environmental-related decision-making behaviors of government: environmental regulations, fiscal expenditure and subsidy policies, and energy structure transformation strategies. Heterogeneity analysis shows that GEA notably reduces firms’ carbon emissions from burning coal and oil energy. Moreover, firms in eastern-north, central, and western regions are more susceptible to GEA, while the impact is insignificant for firms in eastern regions. Furthermore, the carbon reduction performance is more pronounced for enterprises in capital-intensive, technology-intensive, and high polluting industries. This study provides a reference for policymakers to ensure the enforcement of carbon emissions governance of firms and to reach carbon abatement targets.
- PublicationOpen AccessGreen IT and sustainable technology development: bibliometric overview(Wiley, 2019-01-21) García Berná, José Alberto; Fernández Alemán, José Luis; Carrillo de Gea, Juan Manuel; Nicolás Ros, Joaquín; Moros Valle, Begoña; Toval Álvarez, Jose Ambrosio; Mancebo, Javier; García, Félix; Calero, Coral; Informática y SistemasGreen information technologies (GITs) constitute a field of research, whose objective is to reduce the environmental pollution caused by masses of people using and producing technology. This paper describes the search for literature related to GIT and technology sustainability in Scopus database. No restriction was imposed on the time period when carrying out the search. The data gathered revealed that the journal with the highest number of publications is Computer, and the most prolific author is Tomoya Enokido, with 45 publications. A total of 53.12% of the documents found in Scopus were Conference Paper. Although no statistically significant differences were detected, countries in the group with less CO2 kton emissions per inhabitant and less income per capita have a higher percentage of publications. The reduction of power consumption in the cloud data centers is a hot topic for future work, because the word cloud appeared in 9 out of the 10 most frequently cited papers.
