We will analyze proper nouns and neologisms found in Brandon Sanderson’s novel known as Mistborn: The Alloy of Law (2011), and its Spanish translation Aleación de Ley (2012) by Rafael Marín Trechera. The main objective of our study is to explore the challenges that the translation of these newly created elements entails for the literary translator, as well as find out which approach the professional prefers for their translation: foreignization or domestication. An analysis of our corpus, which is composed of seventy-two terms taken from the already mentioned literary work as well as their Spanish translations, was conducted. The theoretical framework for this project explores what translation is, what fantastic literature and its subgenres are, as well as a definition, a classification, and an explanation of the formation and translation processes involved in fantastic proper nouns and neologisms. These fundaments will be applied later to the practical side of our thesis, which combines both quantitative and qualitative analysis. The quantitative analysis studies the presence of proper nouns, neologisms, and the many translation strategies and formation techniques used in the novel. The qualitative analysis will study the adequacy of the decisions made by the translator in the process of transferring the semantic information contained in the selected terms of our corpus. In cases where the solution rendered has turned out to be unfavorable, a new translation which expresses the information contained in the original term has been proposed. Thus, the complexity of a literary work of such magnitude will be proven, as well as the many translation challenges (be those linguistic or cultural), posed by these terms which the author has created in order to build his superb fantasy universe.

- PublicationOpen AccessCrimson Peak (2015): a reinterpretation of Wuthering Heights(2026-06-15) Lucía Ortiz Castillo; García Periago, Rosa María; Sin departamento asociado; Facultades de la UMU::Facultad de LetrasWuthering Heights, Emily Brontë’s sole novel, has not only earned the status of a literary “classic” but has also wielded considerable influence over the centuries. It has become an extremely popular trope for Western culture whether through songs, cinematic adaptations, or literary references. Following an examination of the concepts within the field of adaptation studies and a proper categorization of the work itself, this BA thesis will delve into Guillermo del Toro’s movie Crimson Peak and the reasons why it could be considered a reinterpretation of Wuthering Heights. An exhaustive analysis of both works will be provided, where the Gothic and its main tenets, the characters’ intertextuality and the resemblances behind their roles and psychology will be examined, in order to highlight how both works are intricately connected through these nuanced thematic parallels and narrative echoes. A new perspective on del Toro’s work will show us how Gothic romance and ghost stories remain a part of our entertainment through the centuries which provides the spectator with productive fodder for interpretation based on cultural and literary knowledge

The only effective therapy is a permanent gluten-free diet that shows numerous nutritional deficiencies. For all the above, the objective of developing a functional sourdough gluten-free bread formulation enriched with the by-product of the agro-food industry of Opuntia ficus-indica or purple prickly pear (HCM) is presented. For this, four formulations were developed in order to evaluate their effects: Control; P1, bread with dried HCM skin flour (H1); P2, bread with dried HCM skin encapsulated flour (H2); P3, bread with dried HCM skin flour pre-treated with PEF (H3); and, a Commercial formulation. In this way, a nutritional characterization was carried out by determining moisture, proteins, fat, ash, carbohydrates, energy value and fiber; the pH, total titratable acidity (ATT), color and mineral composition of the breads and by-products of HCM were analyzed; the microstructure (SEM) and starch, lactic acid and acetic content of the breads were evaluated; water and oil retention capacities (WHC and OHC) and solubility of the ingredients in the formulations were determined; and, the antioxidant capacity (FRAP, DPPH, ABTS) and total phenolic content (TFC) (Folin-Ciocalteau method) of the formulations, skin flours of HCM and other selected ingredients were evaluated. The most outstanding results were, in terms of nutritional properties, an increase of 10,48% of ash, 10,32% of FDI, 352,63% of FDS y 35,96% of FDT, as well as a decrease of 6,19% of moisture, 2,54% of carbohydrates and 7,77% of energy value when adding HCM skin flour treated with PEF prior to drying (H3). Significant increases in the content of Ca2+ and K+ were also highlighted due to the addition of H3 to the bread formulation, as well as the notable improvement in antioxidant capacity and TPC in P2 bread with encapsulated dried HCM skin flour. In conclusion, the incorporation of this by-product and the treatments to which it was subjected allowed the nutritional improvement of gluten-free breads, especially in terms of antioxidant capacity, TPC and mineral content.

La sierra de Alcaraz y el campo de Montiel(2022) Domenech Macías, Felipe; Ros, Pablo; Sin departamento asociadoIt is a fact that nature and sports tourism as an alternative to sun and beach tourism is increasingly a booming sector helped by the sensitivity to practice sustainable tourism disclosed by AGENDA 2030 and the need to conserve space. Under these precepts, star tourism is born, a tourism that can only be practiced if light and atmospheric pollution is avoided. And since it is very recent, it is necessary to study it in all its variants: from current trends, still very minor, to the ways of making it known among the population. A journey will be made from the beginnings to the present, the different existing certifications and the official conditions to become an official destination will be studied. A national inventory of all resources will be made. Some orographic conditions of Castilla La Mancha will be specified. A series of hypotheses will be raised and the profile and results of a survey carried out to refute some ideas that exist around this type of tourism will be analyzed. Finally, the opinions of a SWOT matrix answered by professionals from the field of Castilla La Mancha will be presented.

In this way, both consorts had true power and influence, exercising two crucial roles in favor of the stability of the Hispanic Monarchy. On the one hand, Empress Isabella of Portugal, wife of Emperor Charles V, established the model of Queen Regent with political and administrative power through delegated sovereignty. On the other hand, Queen Elisabeth of Valois, wife of King Philip II, represented the model of Queen of Peace with diplomatic influence acting as a nexus of union between two states, the Kingdom of France and the Hispanic Monarchy, through informal mediation. Furthermore, the role of both queens consort was also crucial to dynastic continuity, since both left an important dynastic legacy to their descendants.

This study aims to observe the presence of staphylococci and Enterobacteriaceae of clinical interest in griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus). Cloacal swabs from birds both in wild and in captivity were sampled. Eight staphylococcal species and six enterobacteria species were identified by classical biochemical tests or API,and their sensitivity profile to seventeen antibiotics was determined. The presence of these bacteria could involve a risk to Public Health, environment and wildlife. It would be necessary to study further the wildlife community to know the evolution of these infectious agents.

Facultad de Veterinaria, 2025-09-22) Andrés Zúñiga, Paula; Heras García, Sonia; Coy Fuster, María Pilar; Sin departamento asociado; Facultades de la UMU::Facultad de VeterinariaLocated at the ends of chromosomes, telomeres are a fundamental tool for protecting the integrity of genetic material. Their sequence is regenerated after each cell division by the enzyme telomerase and other molecular mechanisms, preventing the loss of genetic information. However, not all cells can restore their telomere length. This results in their progressive shortening, which, upon reaching a critical length, induces cell death mechanisms in cells. In the cattle industry, assisted reproductive technologies offer many advantages in terms of animal production and genetic characteristics. Nevertheless, it is unknown whether these technologies could induce and/or accelerate telomere shortening in individuals derived from them. The aim of this study was to analyse the possible influence of assisted reproductive technologies on relative telomere length in bovine leukocytes throughout the animals' lives. The relationship between telomere length and the sex and survival of the individuals was also evaluated. Samples were obtained from 19 cows and bulls from a previous study. Relative leukocyte telomere length was determined by quantitative PCR after DNA extraction. Two primers were designed, one to amplify telomeric fragments and the other for the single-copy reference gene GTF2I. A significant influence of assisted reproductive technologies on relative leukocyte telomere length was observed. Specifically, the transfer of embryos produced in vitro, with culture medium supplemented with reproductive fluids, was the technique associated with longer telomere length. In contrast, artificial insemination was associated with the shortest telomere length values. However, no significant associations were observed between telomere length and the sex or survival of the animals. These results suggest that relative leukocyte telomere length appears to be influenced by the type of assisted reproductive technology. Yet, further research would be desirable to complement and validate the differences observed and to investigate their possible relationship with sex and longevity.
