- PublicationOpen AccessExploración de las variaciones en el agotamiento entre deportes de equipo e individuales: las estrategias de afrontamiento como mediadoras entre el capital psicológico y el agotamiento en deportistas de nivel 3(Universidad de Murcia : servicio de publicaciones, 2026) Nambron, Arun; Vasanthi, Gavoutamane; Sreedharan, Sreerag C.; Kambitta Valappil, Ibnu Noufal; Sin departamento asociadoAthlete burnout remains a critical issue within the realm of elite sports, particularly among those participating in individual disciplines, who may be more susceptible compared to their counterparts in team sports. This cross-sectional survey research aimed to explore the disparity in burnout levels between individual and team sport athletes, examine how psychological capital (PsyCap) relates to athlete burnout, and determine whether coping strategies serve as a mediating factor in this relationship. A total of 119 tier 3 athletes participated in the study, completing standardized measures of PsyCap, coping mechanisms, and burnout symptoms. The findings indicated that athletes engaged in individual sports experienced notably higher levels of burnout than their counterparts in team sports (p<0.001). Athletes in individual sports experienced higher levels of exhaustion (*d* = 2.37, a large effect size). Moreover, we found that PsyCap was negatively associated with burnout (p<0.01), indicating that athletes with higher levels of psychological resources experienced fewer symptoms of burnout. Further examination revealed that coping strategies served as a full mediator in this relationship; athletes with elevated PsyCap were more likely to utilize effective coping methods, which in turn helped mitigate burnout. Overall, the model explained a substantial amount of the variance in burnout levels among the athletes. These results highlight the vital role of both PsyCap and effective coping techniques in mitigating burnout risks among elite athletes. Interventions aimed at enhancing these protective factors may help prevent or mitigate burnout among elite athletes, particularly those in individual sports.
- PublicationOpen AccessInfluence of age and maturation on perceived collective efficacy in youth basketball players(Murcia: Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Murcia, 2019) Salles, William das Neves; Soares, André L. A.; Collet, Carine; Milan, Fabrício J.; Palheta, Carlos E; Mendes, Felipe G.; Kós, Luísa D. E.; Nascimento, Juarez Vieira do; Carvalho, Humberto M.Growth and maturation impact the development of young athletes’ physique and function, and may also influence their psychological and behavioral characteristics. Collective efficacy (CE), a psychological measure and potential mediator of sports performance, may be influenced by maturity status. However, there is scarce information available regarding young players' perceptions of CE and the relationship between the CE and the young athletes’ maturity status. Therefore, this study examined the perceived CE variation between young basketballplayers accounting for the influence of chronological age and biological maturity status. The sample included fifty-seven adolescent basketball players aged 9.5 to 15.5 years. Chronological age, estimated age at peak height velocity (PHV) and CE through the Portuguese version of the Collective Efficacy Questionnaire for Sports were considered. Bayesian multilevel modeling was used to examine the athletes’ perceived CE dimensions variation by age and maturity status. Overall, the adolescent basketball players’ perceived CE scores were high for all dimensions: ability (8.77±1.15); effort (9.20±1.03); persistence (8.87±1.18); preparation (8.96±1.08); unity (8.88±1.22). The variability estimates were very large, suggesting that the influence of maturity status on variation may be residual. There was no substantial relation between chronological age and the CE variation scores, although the results suggest that perceived variation was independent of chronological age variation and between players variation in maturity status. Given the small, localized sample investigated, further studies examining the relations of chronological age, maturity status, and perceived CE are suggested for better understanding the young athletes’ development in sport.
- PublicationOpen AccessPersonality, Coping Strategies, and Mental Health in High-Performance Athletes During Confinement Derived From the COVID-19 Pandemic(Frontiers Media, 2021-01-08) Leguizamo, Federico; Olmedilla Zafra, Aurelio; Nuñez, Antonio; Ponseti Verdaguer, Francisco Javier; Gómez Espejo, Verónica; Ruiz Barquín, Roberto; García Mas, Alexandre; Personalidad, Evaluación y Tratamiento Psicológicos; Department of Evolutive and Educational Psychology, Autonomous University of Madrid, Madrid, Spain; GICAFE (Research Group of Sports Sciences), University of the Balearic Islands, Mallorca, SpainThe COVID-19 outbreak has affected the sports field unprecedentedly. The emergency alert has deprived athletes of training in a suitable environment, as they are faced with cancellations of relevant events in their sports careers. This situation can cause stress levels and other emotional disorders similar to those experienced by athletes during periods of injury. Since the relationship between psychological factors and sports injuries is well-studied, the Global Psychological Model of Sports Injury (MGPLD) is applied to this historical situation for athletes. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationships between perfectionism and trait anxiety with indicators of mental health (mood, depression, state anxiety, and stress) in high-performance athletes during confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as to explore the coping strategies that athletes have applied and whether they are perceived as useful for managing negative emotional states. A cross-sectional study was conducted through online questionnaires during April 2020, adapting the Psychological Assessment Protocol of the High-Performance Sports Center of Murcia (Spain), to assess the psychological effects of confinement in a cross-cultural sample of 310 athletes (141 women and 169 men) from different countries in Europe, Asia, and America, and from diverse sports disciplines. The protocol comprised six instruments that test perfectionism, trait anxiety, mood states, stress, depression, coping strategies, and sleep. It was answered online via Google Forms. The results show that maladaptive perfectionism was related to all the indicators of athletes’ mental health. However, athletes’ levels of anxiety, stress, and depressive symptoms are relatively low, and the use of coping strategies such as cognitive restructuring and emotional calm was associated with lower levels of negative emotional states. Besides, the Iceberg Profile, a suitable fit for the mental health model, is observed in the mood of athletes, both in men and in women, although women showed higher levels of anxiety, stress, and depression than men. A strong relationship was observed between maladaptive perfectionism and martial arts sports discipline, superior to other sports. In short, it can be concluded that high-performance athletes in the Leguizamo et al. High-Performance Athletes’ Psychological Impact of COVID-19 studied sample showed negative emotional state values below the expected average. Finally, the proposals for practical applications of the results collected are discussed.
- PublicationOpen AccessShaping student motivation to participate in sporting activities through educational psychology: Insights from a case study at Hanoi Metropolitan University(Universidad de Murcia. Servicio de Publicaciones, 2025) Hoan, Vu Thuy; Minh, Bui Thi Hong; Kien, Le Thanh; Sin departamento asociadoThis study investigated the impact of educational psychology on students' physical activity habits at Hanoi Metropolitan University. The research aimed to analyze psychological factors influencing motivation for physical activity, evaluate the role of teaching styles in physical education, identify barriers to physical activity participation, and propose solutions to help students maintain exercise habits. Using a mixed-methods approach, a survey was conducted with 300 students (135 male, 165 female) to measure motivation for physical activity, perceptions of instructor support, and levels of sports participation, while 30 students were interviewed in-depth to understand the influence of instructors, peer and social media impacts, and personal obstacles. The results indicate that students with higher intrinsic motivation tend to maintain physical activity more effectively, while autonomy-supportive teaching methods enhance motivation and long-term commitment to sports. However, barriers such as academic pressure, lack of sports facilities, and psychological stress negatively affect students' engagement in physical activity. The study concludes that integrating educational psychology principles, such as autonomy-supportive teaching, creating an encouraging environment for physical activity, and leveraging social influences, can help students develop sustainable exercise habits.
