Adolescents’ assessment of several step tracker mobile applications based on their previous level of Physical Activity
(MDPI, 2025-04-25) Gómez Cuesta, Nerea ; Mateo Orcajada, Adrián; Meroño, Lourdes ; Abenza Cano, Lucía ; Vaquero Cristóbal, Raquel; Actividad Física y Deporte; Facultad de Ciencias del Deporte
Background: Adolescents’ use of step tracker mobile applications (apps) could be influenced by their assessment of the mobile app used. Objectives: To analyze differences in the dropout rate, app assessment, and problematic mobile phone use based on prior physical activity levels and the app used. Methods: A study with a quasi-experimental design was carried out with the participation of 240 adolescents, who were further categorized as either active or inactive. The adolescents carried out a 10-week intervention promoted as a part of the physical education curriculum, three days a week, in which they randomly used the Pokémon Go, MapMyWalk, Pacer, or Strava mobile apps after school for cardiorespiratory training. Results: The results showed a higher dropout rate from Pokémon Go in the group of inactive adolescents (p = 0.012). No differences were found in the assessment of apps based on the level of activity of the adolescents, neither overall nor when analyzing this question based on the app used (p > 0.05). As for problematic mobile phone use, only previously inactive adolescents assigned to the Pacer group significantly increased their final score after the intervention (p = 0.044), with no changes being identified in the other groups or apps (p > 0.05). Furthermore, the active adolescents showed a positive relationship between the volume of training and problematic mobile phone use (p = 0.023), specifically with the conflicting use of this device (p = 0.017). Conclusions: The inactive adolescents had a higher dropout rate when using Pokémon Go. There were no differences in app assessment between the active and the inactive participants. However, the active adolescents showed a link between their training volume and problematic mobile phone use.

Influence of maturity status and gender on body composition and physical fitness adaptations to a mobile-app-based physical activity intervention in adolescents
(MDPI, 2026-07-24) López Lombó, Victoria ; Mateo Orcajada, Adrián; Abenza Cano, Lucía ; Abraldes Valeiras, José Arturo; Albaladejo Saura, Mario ; Vaquero Cristóbal, Raquel; Actividad Física y Deporte; Facultad de Ciencias del Deporte
The use of mobile applications to promote physical activity in adolescents has shown promising results regarding body composition and fitness. However, current evidence is limited by treating adolescents as a homogeneous group, often overlooking whether biological maturity status modulates these effects. This randomized controlled trial analyzed whether biological maturity status and gender modulate the effects of a 10-week step-tracker app intervention in 395 adolescents (13.95 ± 1.20 years). The experimental group (EG) completed walking sessions at least three times per week recorded via the app, while the control group (CG) maintained habitual activities. Somatic maturation was estimated via predicted age at peak height velocity. The 10-week intervention consisted of an app-based step-tracker program (≥3 sessions/week, with goals scaling up to 12,500 steps day). Biological maturity status does not act as a global moderator of the intervention, with its influence being strictly restricted to minor, outcome-specific variations in adiposity metrics among early-maturing males. Males in the EG achieved significant reductions in fat mass (p = 0.002; 𝜂2𝑝 = 0.025) and skinfold thickness (p = 0.005; 𝜂2𝑝 = 0.021) compared to the CG. While physical fitness gains in adolescent males across both groups were predominantly driven by natural pubertal growth, females in the EG demonstrated specific intervention-induced improvements in abdominal muscular endurance (p = 0.001–0.042; 𝜂2𝑝 = 0.011–0.028) and handgrip strength (p = 0.009–0.031; 𝜂2𝑝 = 0.012–0.018) that were absent in controls. In conclusion, biological maturity status and gender show outcome-specific interactive effects on adolescent adiposity and physical fitness, though the associated effect sizes remain consistently small to trivial. Given these results, a standardized mobile step-tracking strategy remains a viable and inclusive tool for educational settings, while the design of gender-tailored digital frameworks should be treated cautiously as a hypothesis for future research.

Mobile applications in oncology: a systematic review of health science databases
(Elsevier, 2020-01) Folch-Ayora, Ana; Macia-Soler, Loreto; López-Montesinos, María José; Salas Medina, Pablo; Moles Julio, María Pilar; Seva Llor, Ana Myriam; Enfermería
Introduction: In recent years there has been an exponential growth in the number of mobile applications (apps) relating to the early diagnosis of cancer and prevention of side effects during cancer treatment. For health care professionals and users, it can thus be difficult to determine the most appropriate app for given needs and assess the level of scientific evidence supporting their use. Therefore, this review aims to examine the research studies that deal with this issue and determine the characteristics of the apps involved. Methodology: This study involved a systematic review of the scientific literature on randomized clinical trials that use apps to improve cancer management among patients, using the Pubmed (Medline), Latin America and the Caribbean in Health Sciences (LILACS), and Cochrane databases. The search was limited to articles written in English and Spanish published in the last 10 years. A search of the App Store for iOS devices and Google Play for Android devices was performed to find the apps identified in the included research articles. Results: In total, 54 articles were found to analyze the development of an application in the field of oncology. These articles were most frequently related to the use of apps for the early detection of cancer (n=28), particularly melanoma (n=9). In total, 21 studies reflected the application used. The apps featured in nine articles were located using the App Store and Google Play (n=9), of which five were created to manage cancer-related issues. The rest of the apps were designed for use in the general population (n=4). Conclusions: There is an increasing number of research articles that study the use of apps in the field of oncology; however, these mobile applications tend to disappear from app stores after the studies are completed.

Privacy paradox in the mobile environment: The influence of the emotions
(EPI SCP, 2019-03-25) Sarabia Sánchez, Francisco José; Aguado, Juan Miguel; Martínez Martínez, Inmaculada José; Comunicación
The privacy paradox designates the contradiction between a negative perception of online privacy exploitation by users and a relaxed or passive attitude of users towards the protection of their digital privacy. Since regulation alone is not sufficient to effectively manage the digital privacy problem, promoting responsible, conscious and active behaviour towards the protection of one's own online privacy is a key element of the digital ecosystem. In this sense, understanding and helping to eliminate the privacy paradox have been research and policy objectives for digital services since the beginning of this century, which has intensified with the development of Big Data and AI. However, the existing literature has approached the privacy paradox from the perspective of perceived benefit and thus from a rational calculus perspective. This paper, in contrast, approaches the study of the privacy paradox from the perspective of emotions, their nature (active versus passive emotions) and their intensity (high or moderate). The paper develops a complex structured questionnaire with a relevant international sample of digital users. The aim is to measure the emotional response (intensity and nature of emotions involved) to an incident of unauthorised disclosure of their private data (data breach), comparing this response with the behaviour of changing privacy settings and the propensity to allow access to personal data by using the mobile device in their applications/social networks. The paper concludes that there is a clear disconnect between informational behavioural decisions about privacy management and emotions associated with perceptions of privacy in social networks and mobile apps, even when these are more intense or active in nature. This emotional dissociation reinforces the mechanics of the privacy paradox, making it difficult to intervene to promote consistent digital behaviours. The candidate has been involved in the development of the state of the question, the conceptual framework and the design of the questionnaire, as well as in the analysis of the results and the drawing of conclusions.

-----------------------
