The Argentinian Copi and the Italian Nella Nobili both immigrated to France and to the French language. But if a large part of their work was written in this foreign language, their mother tongue and other languages, far from disappearing, fuel these writers’ creativity, in a hidden but also in a visible way. The text’s literary plurilingualism is one of the reasons why such works remained in the margins of French literature, a phenomenon that was accentuated by the fact that Copi and Nobili, as foreigners, wrote about marginalization. Minor and on the margins, their works express political and aesthetic protest.

The main aim of this article is to explore the notion of literary plurilingualism through the experience of French-speaking writers. The way this discursive methodology works in an enunciative and narratological framework reveals the how these writers relate to the different languages that are featured within their texts. We provide a context to this literary plurilingualism among a range of authors to understand its different dimensions and functions. Our approach aims to prove that it contributes to a close relationship between language(s) and literature, and also to compelling one between the languages themselves. Finally, we consider linguistic and textual issues by addressing topics related to miscegenation, hybridism and alterity, as well as heterolingualism, literary and textual diglossia, and contrastive heteroglossia.

Sicily has always been a territory under dispute by multiple peoples that eventually managed to mold the culture of the inhabitants of the island. As a result, the Sicilian language absorbed the language of the ensuing settlers, particularly Spanish and French. In view of this, this article addresses the analysis of the Spanish, French and Occitan traces, three Romance variants that, through the semantic superstratum, have had an impact on the linguistic confguration of the Sicilian language. With the focus on the dialectal lexicon used by the Palermitan writer, Giuseppina Torregrossa, in her debut novel, L’Assaggiatrice, this study confrms what previous specialized authorities on the feld observed in past times: that the Ibero-Romance and Gallo-Romance infuence have been, and still are, key to the shaping of the Sicilian language, a linguistic variant that is most frequently used in insular literature regardless of the growing social interest in standard Italian after the unifcation.
