- PublicationOpen AccessCaregiving subsidies and spousal early retirement intentions(Cambridge University Press, 2022-07-29) Costa-Font, Joan; Vilaplana Prieto, Cristina; Fundamentos del Análisis EconómicoBalancing caregiving duties and employment can be both financially and emotionally burdensome, especially when care is provided to a spouse at home. Caregiving subsidies can play a role in helping caregivers to cope with such duties. This paper demonstrates how providing financial respite for caregivers can influence individuals' decisions to retire early. We investigate the impact of a reform that extended longterm care (LTC) benefits (in the form of subsidies and supports) on the intention of a caregiving spouse to retire early in Spain. We subsequently examine the effect of austerity spending cuts reducing such publicly funded benefits, and we compare the estimates to the effects of an early retirement reform among private sector workers around the same time. Our preferred estimates suggest evidence of a 10pp reduction in early retirement intentions after the extension of LTC benefits even though the effect is heterogeneous by type of benefit. Consistently, austerity spending cuts in benefits are found to weaken retirement intentions. Even more importantly, our estimates suggest that cuts in caregiving subsidies exert a much stronger effect on early retirement intentions than actual early retirement reforms.
- PublicationEmbargoGrandparent caregivers: the consequences of providing child care in a metropolitan area of southeast Spain(Routledge. Taylor & Francis Group, 2019-10) Martínez Martínez, Antonio L.; Bote Díaz, Marcos; Sánchez Vera, Pedro; SociologíaIn southern European countries, grandparents frequently serve as caregivers for their grandchildren. However, while extensive research has been carried out in other countries, few studies have been undertaken in Spain on the perceived consequences of this caregiving by grandparents on the family unit. This work emphasizes the importance and evolution of intergenerational relationships. Through a mix of quantitative and qualitative techniques, this study seeks to obtain knowledge as to the causes and consequences of providing part-time care for grandchildren in the metropolitan city of Murcia. Results suggest that the provision of care tends to be the result of economic limitations of parents. The consequences of providing child care tend to be perceived positively, although grandparents often report physical overload and the feeling of being emotionally overwhelmed as a result of this caregiving.
- PublicationOpen AccessSocial costs associated with fibromyalgia in Spain(BMC, 2024-07-13) Oliva-Moreno, J.; Vilaplana Prieto, Cristina; Fundamentos del Análisis EconómicoBackground: Fibromyalgia is a chronic rheumatic disease of unknown aetiology, highly disabling and mainly afecting women. The aim of our work is to estimate, on a national scale, the economic impact of this disease on the employment of patients and nonprofessional (informal) care dimension. Methods: Survey on Disabilities, Autonomy and Dependency carried out in Spain in 2020/21 was used to obtain information on disabled individuals with AD and their informal caregivers. Six estimation scenarios were defned as base case, depending on whether the maximum daily informal caregiving time was censored or not, and on the approach chosen for the valuation of informal caregiving time (contingent valuation and replacement time). Another six conservative scenarios were developed using the minimum wage for the estimation of labour losses. Results: Our estimates range from 2,443.6 (willingness to pay, censored informal care time) to 7,164.8 million euros (replacement cost, uncensored informal care time) (base year 2021). Multivariate analyses identifed that the degree of dependency of the person sufering from fbromyalgia is the main explanatory variable for both the probability of being employed and the time spent in informal care. Conservative scenarios estimates range from 1,807 to 6,528 million euros. Conclusions: The high economic impact revealed should help to position a health problem that is relatively unknown in society and for which there are signifcant research and care gaps to be flled.
- PublicationOpen AccessTime value of informal care of people with alzheimer’s disease in Spain: a population-based analysis(Springer, 2024-08-09) Vilaplana Prieto, Cristina; Oliva-Moreno, J.; Fundamentos del Análisis EconómicoThe aims of this paper are to estimate the monetary value of informal care for people with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) in Spain, to compare results with those obtained in 2008 and to analyse the main determinants of the time of the value of informal care. The Survey on Disabilities, Autonomy and Dependency carried out in Spain in 2020/21 was used to obtain information about disabled individuals with AD and their informal caregivers. Assessment of informal care time was carried out using two alternative approaches: the replacement method, and the contingent valuation method (willingness to pay & willingness to accept). The number of people with AD residing in Spanish households and receiving informal care rose to more than 200,000, representing an increase of 43% compared with 2008. The average number of hours of informal care per week ranged from 86 to 101 h, with an estimated value of between €31,584 - €37,019 per year per caregiver (willingness to accept) or €71,653 - €83,984 per year (replacement). The annual total number of caregiving hours ranged between 896 and 1,061 million hours, representing between 0.52 and 0.62 of GDP in 2021 (willingness to accept) or 1.19–1.40 of GDP (replacement). The level of care needs plays a central role in explaining heterogeneity in estimates. These results should be taken into account by decision-makers for long-term care planning in the coming years.
