An explanatory model of the effect of psychosocial variables on non-verbal communicative factors in university teachers of education degrees
(Universidad de Zaragoza, Asociación Universitaria de Formación del Profesorado (AUFOP), 2025) González Valero, Gabriel; Melguizo Ibáñez, Eduardo; Puertas Molero, Pilar; Alonso Vargas, José Manuel; Sin departamento asociado
Several studies have highlighted the alarming work situation of university teachers. The teaching field, together with research work, increases levels of stress and burnout. It is essential to study how some psychosocial factors may affect the non-verbal language of university teachers. The objectives of this research were (a) to develop and adjust an explanatory model of the relationship between stress levels, burnout syndrome, emotional intelligence and non-verbal communication and (b) to study the differences in the theoretical model according to the sex of the participants. This exploratory and cross-sectional research was carried out on 1316 Spanish university teachers. The following instruments were used for data collection: Perceived Stress Scale, Maslach Burnout Inventory, Trait Meta-Mood Scale and Non-verbal Immediacy Scale Self-report. The results showed a direct relationship between stress and emotional exhaustion. An indirect relationship was also found between depersonalization and self-efficacy,the latter being stronger in women. The effect of emotional repair on emotional exhaustion was inverse and stronger for males. As conclusions, there are differences in the effect of psychosocial variables on the non-verbal communicative processes of university teachers according to gender.

Burnout and job satisfaction among nurses in three Spanish regions
(Wiley, 2021-05-17) Acea-López, Lorena; Pastor Bravo, María del Mar; Rubinat-Arnaldo, Esther; Bellon, Filip; Blanco-Blanco, Joan; Gea-Sánchez, Montserrat; Briones-Vozmediano, Erica; Enfermería; Facultad de Enfermería
Aims: To determine the levels of job satisfaction and burnout syndrome and related factors among nurses in three Spanish regions. Background: The nursing profession involves high work stress due to emotional involvement, workload and available resources. Methods: Descriptive multicentric cross-sectional study. Sociodemographic and migration data were collected and participants completed the Job Satisfaction Questionnaire S20/23 and Maslach Burnout Inventory. The data were analysed using descriptive statistical methods using the program SPSS. Results: The sample included 228 nurses (187 women and 41 men), with a mean age of 37.11 ± 10.87. Reported job satisfaction was medium to high. Overall, values were low in emotional fatigue and medium in depersonalization and personal fulfilment. In terms of migration, 21.59% of the participants had already moved to other Spanish regions or another country, while 18.58% had the intention of doing so. Conclusion: Nurses with a temporary contract showed a high burnout rate, and high levels of emotional fatigue, depersonalization and lack of personal fulfilment. Implications for Nursing Management: Strategies are needed to improve working and contractual conditions such as enhancing teamwork, management and leadership skills in nurses; achieving internal promotion; and having higher participation in decision-making and a better balance of power between health institution managers and health professionals.

Burnout and physical symptoms in healthcare professionals: a cross-sectional study
(Wiley, 2025-11-23) Puigtió Rebollo, Núria; Serdà Ferrer, Bernat Carles; Sitjar Suñer, Miquel; Gacto Sánchez, Mariano Luis; Fisioterapia
Aim: The Burnout syndrome (BOS) generates sustained stress and an inability to cope with demands. The aims of this cross-sectional study were (1) to describe the prevalence of BOS; (2) to explore the relation of the BOS with physical symptoms; and (3) to determine the profile favouring the development of the BOS. Design: A cross-sectional descriptive study. Methods: The study was conducted among a sample of 759 healthcare professionals. Data on sociodemographic variables, physical symptoms, the Maslach Burnout Inventory, Cervical Disability Index and Numeric Pain Rating Scale were collected. Results: The prevalence of BOS was high, since more than one out of two participants experienced the syndrome. Mild-moderate levels of burnout were the most prevalent, whilst a low percentage of healthcare professionals displayed signs of severe burnout. High Emotional Exhaustion was the most common dimension, followed by high Depersonalisation, and low levels of Personal Fulfilment. Roughly three out of four participants experienced muscle pain. A nurse of young age working in a hospital or an emergency department emerges as a specific vulnerable profile. Conclusion: The high prevalence of BOS detected among healthcare professionals propels stakeholders to take proactive actions to prevent and revert this health condition, especially considering the profile of nurses at a young age working at a hospital or emergency department, since this specific profile is at a higher risk. The current study confirms the need to prevent and overcome BOS by means of developing and implementing multidimensional tailored interventions to decrease and/or revert symptoms, including psychological aspects associated with the syndrome itself, alongside decreasing unspecific muscle pain in the vertebral region. Implications for the profession and/or patient care: Gender is not a specific predictor of the development of BOS. Nurses usually show high Emotional Exhaustion and low Personal Fulfilment. The presence of BOS is also associated with muscle pain. Advocacy on prevention, assessment and screening of BOS in the field of healthcare is of paramount importance. Impact: Proactive actions shall be adopted to prevent and overcome BOS in healthcare professionals by means of developing and implementing multidimensional tailored interventions to decrease and/or revert symptoms including psychological aspects associated to the syndrome alongside decreasing unspecific muscle pain in the vertebral region.

Burnout in Elite Athletes: a Systematic Review
(Murcia: Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Murcia, 2018) Bicalho, C. C. F.; Costa, V. T.
Abstract: This systematic review analyzes studies on burnout in elite athle- tes and assesses the association between burnout and other psychological constructs for this group. The analysis of the studies is a descriptive se- miquantitative review. The following databases were searched for studies published up to March 2016: DialNet, Lilacs, Portal CAPES, PsycNet, PubMed/Medline, Redalyc, SciELO, Scopus, SportDiscus, and Web of Science. The following descriptors were used: burnout, athletes, and elite (languages: English, Portuguese, Spanish). Seventy-two articles were in- cluded in this review. The results indicate a negative correlation between burnout and the self-determined motivation index, intrinsic motivation, identified regulation, autonomy, competence, relatedness, self-oriented perfectionism, parental expectations, personal standards, and harmonious passion. In addition, positive correlations were indicated between burnout and amotivation, socially prescribed perfectionism, and concern over mis- takes. In conclusion, burnout in elite athletes is a variable different associa- ted with various psychological constructs that are protective or catalyzing of burnout in this population.

Exploration of stress, burnout and technostress levels in teachers. Prediction of their resilience levels using an artificial neuronal network (ANN).
(Elsevier Ltd, 2024-10-01) Pagán-Garbín, Inés; Méndez Mateo, Inmaculada; Martínez Ramón, Juan Pedro; Psicología Evolutiva y de la Educación; Facultades de la UMU::Facultad de Psicología y Logopedia
This study explores stress, burnout syndrome, resilience, and technostress in 168 teachers in Region of Murcia. The general objective was to predict the teacher's resilience levels, as well as analyse the relationship between the variables under study and see the influence of age and gender. The results achieved showed statistically significant relationships in the correlational analysis between stress, technostress, emotional exhaustion, and depersonalisation. Analyses on resilience showed a significant and negative relationship with factors the factors above, but a positive and statistically significant relationship with personal accomplishment. Also, we found age effects on technostress and stress. Furthermore, an artificial neural network (ANN) was created, obtaining a model with a capacity to predict resilience levels in an 86.7% of cases. Personal accomplishment is the most relevant factor to predict resilience levels in teachers, although stress, age and gender are also important.
