    Deyoces el Medo, Espejo de Príncipes en Heródoto

    We conduct a case study focusing on Deioces, a probably legendary Median man, whom Herodotus presents as the first ruler of the independent kingdom of Media in Book I. We consider that his figure deserves to be analysed in depth because his dubious historicity, together with his significant affinities with later Iranian kings of very different character, namely Cyrus II, Smerdis the Magus and Darius I of Persia, suggests that Deioces’ profile may have been modelled in the image and likeness of these three monarchs. We also believe that our study may contribute to shed light on the profiles of oriental rulers in the Histories as a whole.

    Dorieo y Cleómenes: caracterización oracular de dos hermanos en Heródoto

    Este artículo examina las caracterizaciones de los hermanos Dorieo y Cleómenes de Esparta extraídas a partir de una selección de pasajes de las Historias de Heródoto. Su objetivo es evaluar la validez narrativa de la única caracterización explícita, la semblanza combinada de ambos personajes. Para ello, analiza el grado de participación de Dorieo y Cleómenes en siete episodios con temática oracular, atendiendo también a su contexto, a los contenidos oraculares y a las interacciones de los hermanos con otros personajes. Los resultados indican una impugnación de la semblanza combinada. ------------

    Retórica del parentesco en la biografía temprana de Ciro (Hdt. 1.107-130)

    This paper focuses on the rhetoric of kinship in the early biography of the founder of the Persian Empire included in Herodotus’ Histories, that is, within the Herodotean account of Cyrus II of Persia’s birth, childhood and accession to the throne. Its aim is to demonstrate the influence exerted by family ties among characters over the construction of Cyrus’ identity. To this end, the paper examines the speech acts through which characters articulate their family relationships, as well as the clarifications and interpretations made in this respect by the narrator. Results show that there is not a unique identity of Cyrus, but three of them (prince, slave and conqueror) that combine to create a prime example of a hero archetype applicable to men who are born to rule but face great difficulties caused by relatives or people around them. --------------

    Unmasking Onomacritus. Oracles and literary criticism in Herodotus' histories

    Herodotus provides the first attestation of the term “chresmologue” («utterer, compiler, interpreter of oracles») in Greek literature. Of the three named chresmologues, Onomacritus of Athens plays the leading role in the most enlightening anecdote, which mixes poetry, oracular manipulation and major political and military decisions (Hdt. vii 6). Although traditionally neglected, this passage has been the subject of active academic debate in recent years. We believe that an in-depth analysis from the perspective of literary criticism can contribute to an increased understanding of not only chresmologues, but also oracles in general in Herodotus’ Histories.

    Women in Herodotus' Oracles. A Look beyond the Pythia

    Women other than the Pythia are excluded from the consultation and reception of oracles, but they are nevertheless present in the oracular passages of Herodotus’ Histories. This paper focuses on the roles that they play in these passages, with the aim of determining the extent of their visibility. To this end, an analysis is conducted on the basis of their belonging or non-belonging to the community of male consultants or recipients of oracles. The examination shows that female presence in Herodotean oracular passages is quantitatively significant, diverse and pivotal in revealing interactions between the domestic and public domains within the communities involved in these passages.
