- PublicationOpen AccessAnálisis observacional de los saques de esquina en el fútbol masculino profesional en función del resultado parcial(Universidad de Murcia : servicio de publicaciones, 2026) Maneiro, Rubén; Casal, Claudio A.; Losada, José Luís; Ardá, Antonio; Iván-Baragaño, Iyán; Sin departamento asociadoThe aim of the present study was to describe and analyze the behavior of corner kicks in professional men’s football according to match time. A total of 441 corner kicks from 51 matches were analyzed using an observational methodology, applying a nomothetic, punctual, and multidimensional design. Descriptive analyses, bivariate analyses, and a multivariate analysis using a CHAID decision tree were conducted. The results of the bivariate analysis showed significant associations between match time and the number of attacking players (χ²= 52.31; p< .001; ES= 0.217), the players involved in the action (χ²= 8.43; p= .03; ES= 0.123), and the partial match score (χ²= 56.43; p< .001; ES= 0.225). At the multivariate level, the decision tree made it possible to identify contextual patterns in the execution of corner kicks according to match time and score; however, the model showed limited discriminative capacity, and therefore its results should be interpreted from an exploratory and descriptive perspective.
- PublicationOpen AccessLa fuerza integradora y entusiasta de Mª. Teresa Anguera Argilaga(Universidad de Murcia : servicio de publicaciones, 2026) Castañer Balcells, Marta; Sin departamento asociadoThe laudatio delivered by Dr. Marta Castañer at the ceremony awarding the title of Doctor Honoris Causa to Dr. María Teresa Anguera Argilaga (University of Lleida, November 13, 2024) highlights an outstanding scientific and human trajectory marked by more than 300 scientific publications and the supervision of over 70 doctoral theses, together with an integrative and internationally oriented research leadership. The text emphasizes her foundational role in the development of Observational Methodology since the 1970s and its subsequent consolidation through Mixed Methods approaches, which have substantially strengthened methodological rigor across the Behavioral Sciences and, especially, in Sport and Exercise Sciences, where her impact has been decisive in researcher training, competitive project development, and knowledge transfer, particularly within the INEFC and the University of Lleida. The laudatio combines academic excellence—supported by her inclusion in the top 2% of the Stanford ranking in Sports Sciences and Experimental Psychology—with an ethical and relational model of scientific leadership, summarized in the VAT acronym (Valor, Audacity, and Tenacity), portraying Anguera as a leading international figure who has built collaborative networks, mentored generations of scholars, and contributed decisively to the consolidation of a methodologically robust and socially committed sport science.
- PublicationOpen AccessUn enfoque plural del análisis secuencial desde perspectivas complementarias: estudio de caso de la esgrima desde un diseño de métodos mixtos(Universidad de Murcia : servicio de publicaciones, 2026) Anguera, Maria Teresa; Tarragó, Rafael; Iglesias, Xavier; Lapresa, Daniel; Sin departamento asociadoThe aim of this study is to highlight different perspectives of sequentiality, each involving different analytical techniques, and from a mixed methods perspective. Mixed methods studies have been defined by several authors as studies aiming to integrate qualitative and quantitative elements. On the one hand, from a “classic” approach and using a set of simulated data, we examine the merits of calculating the distance between sequences as a measure of their similarity or dissimilarity. On the other hand, we explore three approaches to sequence analysis—lag sequential analysis, polar coordinate analysis, and T-pattern detection—with the aim of analyzing the degree to which their results converge. Following a discussion of these techniques, we present an empirical case study from the field of sport sciences. In this study, we analyze a fencing competition in the final stages of a World Fencing Championship as a particular case of systematic observation. Considering the strong methodological component of this study, we focus on the first step of diachrony—intrasessional analysis—although our goal is to extend our analyses to include intersessional diachrony. Using a specific observational instrument, we created a dataset reflecting the sequences of events that, following the necessary data quality controls, was analyzed using lag sequential analysis, polar coordinate analysis, and T-pattern detection. The results were then combined and analyzed for similarities and dissimilarities. Finally, drawing from the results of this case study, we propose a procedure for harnessing the potential and guarantees offered by sequence analysis to bring together individual cases with similar structures and sequences to build a robust multiple-case study
- PublicationOpen AccessConservación de las danzas tradicionales filipinas en la educación superior para fomentar la competencia cultural de los estudiantes a través de la participación en la danza(Universidad de Murcia : servicio de publicaciones, 2026) Lobo, Joseph; Sin departamento asociadoThis study investigated the conservation and preservation of Philippine traditional dances as intangible cultural heritage and their role in fostering students’ cultural competence (cultural knowledge, sensitivity and awareness) through engagement in physical education within higher education. A total of 270 second-year college students enrolled in Physical Education courses at a selected state university in the Philippines participated in the study. Cultural competence was measured using an adapted Cultural Appreciation of Martial Arts Scale, and dance engagement was assessed using an adapted Sports Engagement Scale (vigor, dedication and absorption). Using a correlational-predictive design with multiple regression analysis, the study found that participation in traditional dance showed significant associations with students’ cultural competence outcomes. The regression models explained substantial proportions of variance and demonstrated large effect sizes: competence (R² = .535, f² = 1.15), knowledge (R² = .440, f² = 0.79), sensitivity (R² = .536, f² = 1.16) and awareness (R² = .346, f² = 0.53). Across these outcomes, the absorption dimension of dance engagement consistently emerged as the strongest correlate, emphasizing the importance of deep, experiential participation. These findings underscore the need to integrate traditional dance into physical education curricula not only to preserve cultural heritage but also to enhance students’ cultural competence and equip them to navigate a globalized world. Educational institutions are encouraged to create experiential learning opportunities that promote cultural awareness and sensitivity, fostering social cohesion and respect for cultural diversity
- PublicationOpen AccessLas experiencias deportivas como predictores de la ansiedad precompetitiva en atletas de doble carrera(Universidad de Murcia : servicio de publicaciones, 2026) Carvalho, Lara Kelly Fonseca de; Freire, Gabriel Lucas Morais; Costa, Nathan Leonardo Gomes; Oliveira, Daniel Vicentini de; Vieira, José Luiz Lopes; Ferreira, Luciana; Fidelix, Yara Lucy; Nascimento Junior, José Roberto Andrade do; Sin departamento asociadoThis research investigated the sport experiences as predictor of pre-competitive anxiety in Brazilian dual-career athletes. Participants were 135 male (n = 120) and female (n = 15) athletes, with a mean age of 23.43 years (SD = 9.77), who competed at the following sports: indoor soccer (n = 39), handball (n = 15), volleyball (n = 24), basketball (n = 41), and table tennis (n = 16). These participants completed the University Sport Experiences Scale -Portuguese version (USES-BR) and the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2R (CSAI-2R), which assess perceptions of sport experiences and pre-competitive anxiety, respectively. Data analysis was conducted through the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, Pearson's correlation, and multiple linear regression (p<0.05). The results showed that initiative presented a positive prediction on self-confidence (β = 0.34), while the domains of interpersonal relationships (β = 0.27 and β = 0.31) and social exclusion (β = 0.28 and β = 0.29) presented a positive prediction on somatic and cognitive anxiety. It was concluded that positive experiences (initiative) seem to act as a source of self-confidence, while positive (interpersonal relationships) and negative (social exclusion) experiences seem to promote cognitive and somatic anxiety
- PublicationOpen Accessnálisis de Coordenadas Polares en Metodología Observacional: Corrección del Umbral Crítico e Impacto en el Error Tipo I(Universidad de Murcia : servicio de publicaciones, 2026) Rodríguez Medina, Jairo; Arias, Benito; Hernández-Mendo, Antonio; Sin departamento asociadohe Polar Coordinate technique (Sackett, 1980) is a fundamental tool for data reduction in observational methodology. However, this study demonstrates that the original proposal contains a critical statistical error in its inference: it calculates the Radius vector (R) by combining two Z-statistics but tests the hypothesis incorrectly using the critical value of the Normal distribution (1.96). The objectives of this study are: (1) to demonstrate that the use of the Normal distribution threshold for the Radius hypothesis test is incorrect; (2) to theoretically substantiate the Rayleigh distribution as the appropriate one for the interpretation of the Radius; and (3) to confirm that t
- PublicationOpen AccessAnálisis observacional de las acciones con balón de los delanteros centro en la UEFA euro 2020(Universidad de Murcia : servicio de publicaciones, 2026) Fernández-Sante, Daniel; Iván-Baragaño, Iyán; Maneiro, Rubén; Ardá, Antonio; Sin departamento asociadoThe objectives of this study were to analyze the offensive ball actions performed by center forwards in UEFA EURO 2020, to understand the relationship among various analyzed technical–tactical criteria and categories -including spatial, interactional, and intentional criteria-and the result of the action, and to establish a predictive model of the action results. To do so, 599 UEFA EURO offensive forwards actions were analyzed using observational methodology by means of an ad hoc observation instrument composed of 4 dimensions, 14 criteria and 129 categories, with an inter-observer reliability of κ = 0.842. Three types of analysis were carried out: a descriptive analysis by counting absolute and relative frequencies, a bivariate analysis using contingency tables between the criteria included in the observation instrument and the action result, and finally a predictive model based on binary logistic regression. The results obtained showed that the criteria modifying the result of the forwards' actions were: Area where the ball comes from (χ²= 140.3; p< .001; ES=.342), Area where the action takes place(χ²= 148.7; p< .001; ES=.352), Initial interaction context(χ²= 57.7; p< .001; ES=.219), Previous action(χ²= 78.2; p< .001; ES=.256), First-contact surface(χ²= 20.5; p= .002; ES=.131), Field area where the ball goes(χ²= 498;p< .001; ES=.645), Tactical intention(χ²= 73.9; p< .001; ES=.351), Action performed(χ²= 557.9; p< .001; ES=.682), and Final interaction context(χ²= 348.2; p< .001; ES=.539). From the multivariate approach, the logistic regression model has shown a predictive capacity of 80% when it came to predicting the ability of center forwards to maintain ball possession. The significant predictor variables were the Initial interaction context, the Tactical intention and theAction performed. These results can be useful when preparing and training for the specific position of the center forward as well as increasing their performanc
- PublicationOpen AccessEvaluación de la coherencia estratégico-táctica entre la preparación y el rendimiento de un equipo femenino de baloncesto(Universidad de Murcia : servicio de publicaciones, 2026) Monteiro, Alan; Rangel, Wellington; Fellingham, Gilbert; Heiner, Matthew; Lamas, Leonardo; Sin departamento asociadoIntegrative assessment of a basketball team combining the preparation phase and match performance is key for preventing coaches from misleading interpretations about outcomes. The goal of the study was to evaluate the coherence between team preparation and match performance in a women basketball team supported by data and considering the emphasis and efficiency on tactical contents. Coherence was evaluated based on the emphasis given to pre-defined basketball contents, and respective efficiency, during practices and match. Data were gathered a women’s college team (15 players; 20.0 ± 2.5 years old), in preparation for the national tournament. Team strategy was assessed from the season’s playbook. Practice data was gathered from the full pre-season period. Competitive performance was analyzed from a match. Bayesian methods were used to compute the posterior distributions of the parameters for time of training tasks. Set offense was emphasized more than transition during both practice and match, although their match efficiencies were similar. Team plays were prioritized over group tactics throughout practices (posterior mean difference: 42.3 min/week, SD: 10.1, 90% CI [25.8–58.9]) and in match performance, demonstrating higher efficiency. Our approach successfully traced preparation–performance coherence in a basketball team. Practices reflected a game-based approach that emphasized offense–defense integration and set offense supported by team plays. Coherence was demonstrated by the higher proportion of set offenses relative to transitions, both during practices and match. Similarly, a greater proportion and efficiency of team plays compared with individual or group actions. The approach should provide objective coaching support

- PublicationOpen AccessPerfil de habilidades psicológicas en patinadores/as artísticos/as de Sudamérica y su relación con el compromiso y la intención de abandono del deporte(Universidad de Murcia : servicio de publicaciones, 2026) López, Laura Rosa; Corti, Juan Facundo; Vallejos, Lucila; Rosas, Analía; Maturano, Karina; Raimundi, María Julia; Sin departamento asociadoCompetitive figure skating is a sport of early specialization characterized by highly stressful moments. The aim of this work is, on the one hand, to establish the profile of psychological skills in elite level figure skaters of individual disciplines, studying their relationship with age, category, performance and the presence of psychology consultants. On the other hand, to examine predictive power of these skills on engagement and intention to drop-out. A total of 194 skatersfrom South America (88.7% female) aged 14-37 years (M= 20.29, SD= 4.44) participated, completing a Sociodemographic Questionnaire, the Psychological Inventory of Sport Performance, the Athlete Engagement Questionnaire and the Intention to drop-out scale. The skaters of the highest category (World Skate) had higher scores in self-confidence (d= 0.31), negative energy control (d= 0.44) and attention control (d= 0.33), while those who achieved the first place within the last two years had higher levels of self-confidence (d= 0.55) and negative energy control (d= 0.43) than those who achieved second or third place. The same occurred for those working with a psychologist in their visualization and imagery control (d= 0.30) and motivation (d= 0.29). No differences were found according to age. Motivation of skaters predicts both engagement (β= 0.38) and intention to drop-out (β= -0.55), and for engagement, positive energy control (β= 0.42) also resulted as a significant predictor. Understanding the psychological variables and optimizing them through the work of Psychology professionals may allow improving training processes, well-being and increasing the possibilities of success in sport competition
It was an observational, cross-sectional study analyzing match tactics through timing, frequency, concatenation, location, type, and effectivenessof techniques. Participants were 34 male black belts (1st Dan or higher) competing in the XXI Brazilian Championship of the Japan Karate Association (JKA). Match footage was analyzed by a single trained observer with confirmed reliability. Resultsshowed similar trends between finalists and non-finalists in technique frequency, sequence composition, and effectiveness. Significant differences appeared in timing, with more attackers among finalists (p < 0.05, Cramer’s V = 0.39), suggesting an advantage in limiting opponents’ timing. Effective techniques occurred mainly in central and peripheral areas for finalists and non-finalists, respectively. Although both groups favored upper-limb techniques, finalists performed more two-technique sequences.
- PublicationOpen AccessEntre academia y experiencia: cualificación de entrenadores en procesos de reserva deportiva en Colombia(Universidad de Murcia : servicio de publicaciones, 2026) Jáuregui, German Nieto; Moreno-Lavaho,Edwin Alberto; Sandoval, Álvaro Armando Cifuentes; Sin departamento asociadoThe role of the sports coach has acquired relevance in the contemporary sports system, especially where generational change is taking place in Colombia. Beyond their technical role, coaches represent educational and social agents responsible for articulated training experiences with pedagogical principles and human values. The objective of this research was to analyze the qualifications of coaches leading sports reserve processes in Colombia, considering the academic, continuing education, and experiential dimensions. To this end, a quantitative, observational, cross-sectional study with a non-experimental design was conducted. A validated structured questionnaire was administered to n=210 coaches enrolled in the School of Talents program of the Ministry of Sport, with nonparametric statistical analysis (Spearman's rho, Kruskal-Wallis, and Dunn tests). The findings showed that athletic career path is significantly associated with achievements in coaching (ρ=0.53), unlike experience accumulated solely in the coaching role or even the level of academic training. This result, consistent with international literature, indicates that competitive experience is a determining factor in professional practice. However, gaps in gender, postgraduate training, and socioeconomic conditions are also identified, limiting the consolidation of the Colombian coach profile. In conclusion, coach qualification is a heterogeneous and multidimensional process. It is essential to strengthen comprehensive training pathways and equitable access to academic and employment opportunities in order to dignify the profession and consolidate generational renewal
