- PublicationOpen AccessAnalysing the AD process. Creativity, accuracy and experience(ZHAW, 2020-01) Ramos Caro, Marina; Rojo López, Ana María; Traducción e InterpretaciónThe study of audio description (AD) has flourished over the last decade to become a broad research area in its own right. However, experimental research on the processes involved in the creation of AD is still scarce. More specifically, the study of describers’ psychological traits has so far been a rather unexplored area in the field. The present study focuses on creativity as one of the main professional competencies required for AD. In order to study the relationship between creativity, accuracy and experience, we recruited 10 professional describers and measured their creativity through a validated creativity test. They were then asked to create AD scripts for four highly poetic scenes. Their performance was analysed in terms of the accuracy and subjectivity of the texts. Our results show that more experienced describers are more creative, less subjective and more accurate when creating their descriptions.
- PublicationOpen AccessAnalysis of speech rhythm and heart rate as indicators of stress on student interpreters(Taylor and Francis Group Routledge, 2021-03-30) Rojo López, Ana María; Foulquié Rubio, Ana Isabel; Espín López, Laura; Martínez Sánchez, Francisco (1960); Traducción e Interpretación; Anatomía Humana y Psicobiología; Psicología Básica y MetodologíaStress is assumed to be intrinsic to interpreting and the ability to manage it a presumed predictor of performance. And yet, empirical research on the role of stress in interpreting has remained scarce. This study explores the impact of stress and anxiety on the academic scores, heart rate (HR) and speech rhythm of 23 student interpreters in a liaison interpreting task. Participants’ stress and anxiety are measured using HR measures and the STAI test. Their speech rhythm is automatically analyzed through different indexes deriving from the variability of syllabic intervals. Results show that students’ grades negatively correlate with their levels of state anxiety, which are, in turn, significantly related to their rhythmic parameters in L1-L2 interpreting. Greater rhythmic variability correlates with students’ lower examination scores when speech is delivered into their L2. A significant increase in mean HR is reported during the interpreting task phase as compared with baseline and recovery phase, suggesting that HR was a sensitive marker to detect the students’ stress response, but not to the level of influencing performance. Results point to the need to triangulate different measures to obtain a complete picture of how stress and anxiety may impact interpreting performance.
- PublicationRestrictedApproaching the emotional impact of loss of manner in translation: a case study on the reception of translated domestic violence testimonies(Taylor and Francis Group, Routledge, 2024-11-20) Cifuentes-Férez, Paula; Traducción e InterpretaciónTranslating between typologically different languages most often involves altering the amount and type of manner information present in the source text. Whether manner is added or omitted in translated crime events, for instance, has been found to influence the audience’s judgments about the violence and their decisions on a possible punishment. However, the emotional impact on the audience has not been addressed yet. The present article reports on a reception study designed to test the emotional impact of loss of manner in the English-into-Spanish translation of domestic violence testimonies by including psychometric tests to measure audience’s positive and negative affect and emotional engagement with the text. Results reveal intriguing differences on the audience’s emotional impact and suggest that, beyond including or omitting manner, the type of crime event described in the text plays a crucial role.
- PublicationOpen AccessAudio Described vs. Audiovisual Porn: Cortisol, Heart Rate and Engagement in Visually Impaired vs. Sighted Participants(Daniele Di Lernia, Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, Italy, 2021-04-01) Rojo López, Ana María; Espín López, Laura; Traducción e InterpretaciónAudio description remains the cornerstone of accessibility for visually impaired audiences to all sorts of audiovisual content, including porn. Existing work points to the efficacy of audio description to guarantee immersion and emotional engagement, but evidence on its role in sexual arousal and engagement in porn is still scant. The present study takes on this challenge by comparing sighted and visually impaired participants’ experiences with porn in terms of their physiological response [i.e., cortisol and heart rate (HR)] and self-report measures of affect [Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS); Watson et al., 1988], anxiety [State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI); Spielberger et al., 1970], sexual reactivity and arousal [Sexual Inhibition/Sexual Excitation Scale (SIS/SES); Moyano and Sierra (2014); and the Ratings of Sexual Arousal (RSA); Mosher (2011)], and narrative engagement or transportation [The Transport Narrative Questionnaire, Green and Brock (2013)]. 69 Spanish participants were allocated into three different groups: 25 sighted participants who watched and heard the porn scenes in their audio-visual version (AV); 22 sighted participants who listened to the audio described version without images (AD); and 22 visually impaired participants who also listened to the audio described version without images (ONCE). Overall, results on physiological and self-report measures revealed no significant differences between groups or different versions of the clips. The analysis of cortisol reactivity to porn as the maximum increase or decrease in cortisol (t+12) with respect to baseline values (t−20) revealed no significant differences between the groups, but pointed to a higher percentage of non-responders than responders in the three groups, the highest being found in the ONCE group. As for participants’ cardiac response to the clips, no significant differences were found across the groups, with the highest HR levels being registered in the baseline phase. Self-report measures revealed significant between-group differences in negative affect. The ONCE group displayed the highest pre-task levels of negative affect and was the only group that showed a decrease in negative affect after exposure to the clips. Sighted and visually impaired participants reported to be moderately aroused and immersed in the films, regardless of exposure to AV or AD porn. In addition, correlations found between participants’ levels of self-report sexual arousal and transportation and post-task affect pointed to a positive relationship between exposure to porn and perceived levels of sexual arousal and affect. Results from the study reflected the efficacy of audio description in providing sighted and visually impaired audiences with a similar experience to that offered by original AV porn scenes. This study is exploratory but provides valid, initial groundwork for further research on the impact of audio description on porn reception.

- PublicationRestrictedCan emotion stir translation skill?(John Benjamins Publishing Company, 2016-10-03) Rojo López, Ana María; Ramos Caro, Marina; Traducción e InterpretaciónThe present paper reports on an experiment to measure the impact of emotions and certain personality traits on translation performance. The study replicates Lehr’s (2013) methodology, but also explores the influence of personality factors on the induced emotional impact. Unlike Lehr’s study, our experiment focuses exclusively on translation students (Spanish L1/English as L2). A Spanish version of Block and Kremen’s (1996) ego-resiliency scale (ER89) was first used to assess trait variation in the participants’ psychological resilience. They were then asked to provide a translation of an emotional text, which was rated for accuracy and creativity. After having submitted their translation, they were randomly assigned to a positive or negative feedback group and received false feedback on their performance. Immediately afterwards they were asked to translate a second text, whose ratings for accuracy and creativity were compared to those from their first translation. A self-reporting questionnaire was finally carried out to obtain data on the participants’ subjective feelings during experimental time. Results corroborate evidence from Lehr’s work, pointing to a differential impact of emotions on different facets of translation performance and suggesting that different emotions may activate different processing styles. Although no statistically significant effect is found for resilient personality traits, data suggest they may also play a role in guiding translational behaviour.
- PublicationRestrictedCommunication issues during triage in a paediatric emergency department: Nurses' perspectives(John Benjamins B.V., 2020) Foulquié Rubio, Ana Isabel; Dolores Beteta Fernández; Traducción e Interpretación; Ineke H. M. Crezee; Eva N. S. Ng; Facultades de la UMU::Facultad de LetrasThis chapter presents the results of a questionnaire-based study carried out in the paediatric emergency department of one of the main hospitals in the Region of Murcia (south-eastern Spain). It explores the perceptions of the triage nurses who communicate with immigrant children and their families, and the current solutions being applied to address those communication needs. The results show that nurses experience mainly linguistic difficulties when communicating with non-Spanish-speaking patients and their families, and that informal, ad hoc solutions are the order of the day.

- PublicationOpen AccessCorrección automatizada de textos en español en MS Word mediante una macro de limpieza textual(Universidad de Cádiz, 2025-10-30) Goberna Falque, Juan Ramón; Romero Oliva, Manuel Francisco; Traducción e Interpretación; Facultad de LetrasThis study presents the results of a teaching innovation project developed during the 2022-23, 2023-24 and 2024-25 academic years in the external internship subjects of the Master's Degree in Editorial Translation at the University of Murcia. The main objective is to evaluate the implementation and impact of automation tools in text revision and correction processes in academic and professional contexts. The project focused on the implementation of 'Dr. Macro's Stain Remover,' a text cleaning macro as a tool for automating revision and correction processes in MS Word, created and distributed free of charge by philologist Antonio Martín.The research analyses the revision habits of three groups (60 students, 22 academic tutors and 10 editors) and their experience with this tool. Surveys were used to study revision methods, the application of orthotypographical rules, prior knowledge of macros, their perceived usefulness and the intention to use them in the future. Impact evaluation was conducted through analysis of academic tutors' report grades, observing a 0.5-point improvement in revision and correction competence (average grade of 9.25/10 compared to previous courses without the tool). The results reveal a significant discrepancy between prior knowledge and subsequent evaluation: although prior knowledge is limited (28.3% in students, 45.5% in tutors, and 0% in editors), the evaluation after use is very high (93.3%, 100%, and 100% respectively). This discrepancy between knowledge (28.3%) and actual use (18.3%) in students evidences technology adoption barriers that transcend mere knowledge of the tool. The study concludes that these tools represent an efficient innovation, with benefits for both training and professional practice. The implementation of text cleaning macros in academic and professional environments demonstrates significant potential for optimizing editorial workflows and improving the quality of revisión and correction processes.
