A multi-group confirmatory factor analysis of the revised children's anxiety and depression scale (RCADS) in Spain, Chile and Sweden
    (2022-05-10) Cervin, M.; Veas Iniesta, Alejandro; Piqueras Rodriguez, J. A.; Martínez-gonzález, A. E.; Psicología Evolutiva y de la Educación
Background: There is a need for a measure that can be used across countries and cultures to advance cross-cultural research about internalizing mental health symptoms in children and adolescents. The Revised Children’s Anxiety and Depression Scale (RCADS) is a potential candidate, but no study has examined whether its scales are measured similarly in youth populations from different countries. Methods: In this study, we use confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and multi-group CFA to examine the crosscultural properties of a short and free to use 30-item version of RCADS that assesses social, generalized, panic, and separation anxiety alongside depression and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. We tested the factor structure of RCADS in children and adolescents from Chile, Spain, and Sweden, recruited using different research designs (i.e., school-based studies and an anonymous web survey), and whether the factor structure showed measurement invariance across the three countries. Results: The proposed factor structure of RCADS showed good model/data fit in all three countries and was superior to a unidimensional model in which correlations among scale items were explained by a single broad internalizing factor. Each RCADS subscale showed adequate to excellent internal consistency in all three countries and multi-group CFA supported scalar invariance across the three countries. Limitations: No clinical sample was included. Conclusions: This study provides an important first step in supporting the use of RCADS in cross-cultural research on depression, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive symptoms in children and adolescents, but more work on validity aspects of the scale across cultures is needed.

A statistical complexity measure can differentiate Go/NoGo trials during a visual-motor task using human electroencephalogram data
(Elsevier, 2025-10-04) P. Carlos, Francisco Leandro; Carla Navas, María; Soares Coelho Da Paz, Ícaro Rodolfo; Bordini de Lucas, Helena; Ubirakitan, Maciel-Monteiro; Araújo Rodrigues, Marcelo Cairrão; Aguilar Domingo, Moises; Herrera-Gutiérrez, Eva; Rosso, Osvaldo A.; Bavassi, Luz; Selingardi Matias, Fernanda; Psicología Evolutiva y de la Educación; Facultad de Psicología y Logopedia
Complexity is a ubiquitous concept in contemporary science and everyday life. A complex dynamical system is usually characterized by a blend of order and disorder, as well as emergent phenomena that often span multiple temporal and spatial scales. The information processes related to different cognitive processes in the brain can be studied in light of statistical differences based on complexity measures of the electrophysiological time series from different trial types. Recently, it has been demonstrated that a symbolic information approach can be a valuable tool for discriminating response-related differences between Go and NoGo trials using the local field potential of brain regions in monkeys. The method shows significant differences between trial types earlier than the simple average of the electrical signals. Here, we analyze human electroencephalogram data during a Go/NoGo task using information-theoretical quantifiers, including entropy and complexity. We employ the Bandt–Pompe symbolization methodology to determine a probability distribution function for each time series and then to calculate information theory indices. We show that a few channels, especially a central and an occipital electrode, consistently differentiate Go/NoGo trials at the individual level. We also show that different trial types occupy separate regions in the complexity-entropy plane. Our method also captures specific time windows to better differentiate the trial type. Moreover, we show that our results are robust at the group level, considering the average activity of all subjects.

ADHD and ODD Symptoms in toddlers: common and specific associations with temperament dimensions
(Springer, 2020) Sánchez Pérez, Noelia; Putnam, Samuel P.; Gartstein, Maria A.; González Salinas, Carmen; Psicología Evolutiva y de la Educación
The aim of this work was to study the relationship between temperament and signs of psychopathology in typically developing toddlers. More specifically, Attentional Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) symptoms were analyzed in connection with fine-grained temperament dimensions. The sample was composed of 65 toddlers aged between 18 and 35 months. Bivariate correlations showed that higher levels of negative emotionality and approach tendencies, and lower levels of inhibitory control, were related to more ADHD and ODD manifestations. Bivariate correlations also indicated unique associations: lower levels of soothability were associated with higher ODD symptoms, whereas lower attentional focusing and low-intensity pleasure were related with higher ADHD symptoms. Additionally, regression and path analysis models indicated that ADHD was predominantly associated with attentional focusing and motor activation whereas ODD was most closely related to frustration. Our findings highlight the relevance of studying early correlates of psychopathological manifestations to identify children who could benefit from prevention and early intervention programs.

Adherence to the Mediterranean diet and depressive, anxiety, and stress symptoms in Spanish adolescents: results from the EHDLA study
(Springer, 2024-01-03) Jiménez‑López, Estela; Eumann Mesas, Arthur; Visier‑Alfonso, María Eugenia; Pascual‑Morena, Carlos; Martínez‑Vizcaíno, Vicente; Herrera-Gutiérrez, Eva; López‑Gil, José Francisco; Psicología Evolutiva y de la Educación; Facultad de Psicología y Logopedia
Depression and anxiety are prevalent and disabling conditions among adolescents. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) and depressive, anxiety, and stress symptoms in adolescents. This cross-sectional study included a sample of 698 adolescent students from a region of Spain (mean age of 13.9 ± 1.5 years; 56.2% girls). Adherence to the MD was evaluated with the Mediterranean Diet Quality Index in children and adolescents (KIDMED). Mental health symptoms were measured with the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21). Logistic regression models were performed, including a wide range of potential confounders. Compared to individuals with low adherence to the MD, those with moderate and high adherence had lower odds of experiencing depressive symptoms (odds ratio [OR] = 0.40, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.24–0.65 and OR = 0.33, 95% CI 0.20–0.55, respectively), which were statistically significant even after adjustment. No significant associations were found regarding anxiety or stress symptoms. Therefore, according to our results, higher adherence to the MD is inversely related to having depressive symptoms among adolescents, regardless of socioeconomic, anthropometric, and lifestyle factors. Considering the deleterious effects of mental health problems in youths, further research on the role of nonpharmacological strategies for the prevention and treatment of depressive symptoms in adolescence is essential.

Anticipated synchronization in human EEG data: unidirectional causality with negative phase-lag
(American Physical Society, 2020-07-15) Carlos, Francisco-Leandro P.; Ubirakitan, Maciel Monteiro; Rodrigues, Marcelo Cairrão Araújo; Aguilar Domingo, Moisés; Herrera-Gutiérrez, Eva; Gómez Amor, Jesús; Copelli, Mauro; Carelli, Pedro V.; Matias, Fernanda S.; Psicología Evolutiva y de la Educación; Facultades de la UMU::Facultad de Educación
Understanding the functional connectivity of the brain has become a major goal of neuroscience. In many situations the relative phase difference, together with coherence patterns, has been employed to infer the direction of the information flow. However, it has been recently shown in local field potential data from monkeys the existence of a synchronized regime in which unidirectionally coupled areas can present both positive and negative phase differences. During the counterintuitive regime, called anticipated synchronization (AS), the phase difference does not reflect the causality. Here we investigate coherence and causality at the alpha frequency band (f∼10 Hz) between pairs of electroencephalogram (EEG) electrodes in humans during a GO/NO-GO task. We show that human EEG signals can exhibit anticipated synchronization, which is characterized by a unidirectional influence from an electrode A to an electrode B, but the electrode B leads the electrode A in time. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first verification of AS in EEG signals and in the human brain. The usual delayed synchronization (DS) regime is also present between many pairs. DS is characterized by a unidirectional influence from an electrode A to an electrode B and a positive phase difference between A and B which indicates that the electrode A leads the electrode B in time. Moreover we show that EEG signals exhibit diversity in the phase relations: the pairs of electrodes can present in-phase, antiphase, or out-of-phase synchronization with a similar distribution of positive and negative phase differences.

Are the use and addiction to social networks associated with disordered eating among adolescents? Findings from the EHDLA study
(Springer, 2023-05-26) López‑Gil, José Francisco; Chen, Sitong; Jiménez‑López, Estela; Abellán‑Huerta, José; Herrera-Gutiérrez, Eva; Panisello Royo, Josefa María; Eumann Mesas, Arthur; Tárraga-López, Pedro J.; Psicología Evolutiva y de la Educación; Facultad de Psicología y Logopedia
The objective of this study was to examine whether the use and addiction of social networks are associated with disordered eating in Spanish adolescents. A cross-sectional study was carried out using data from the Eating Healthy and Daily Life Activities study. The final sample included 653 adolescents (44.0% boys). Social network use (i.e., Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok) was evaluated by a single item scale with multiple response options. The Short Social Networks Addiction Scale-6 Symptoms was used to determine addiction to social networks. Disordered eating behaviors were assessed with the Sick, Control, One, Fat, Food scale. Adolescents with high social network use had greater odds of disordered eating (odds ratio [OR] = 1.88, 95% confidence intervals [CI] 1.17–3.02). Adolescents with high social network addictive behaviors also showed a higher likelihood of presenting disordered eating (OR = 2.04, 95% CI 1.34–3.12). Social network use and addiction must be considered factors related to disordered eating among adolescents.

Buss and Perry Aggression Questionnaire-Short Form in Spanish children
(Springer, ) Torregrosa, María Soledad; Gómez Núñez, M. I.; Inglés, Cándido J.; Ruiz Esteban, Cecilia; Sanmartín, Ricardo; García Fernández, José Manuel; Psicología Evolutiva y de la Educación; Facultades de la UMU: Facultad de Educación
As aggressive behaviors emerge at early ages, is necessary to analyze this construct and its relationship with emotional variables as soon as possible to plan more effective interventions. This work has three main goals. First, to validate the scores of the Aggression Questionnaire Short Form (AQ-SF) in a random sample of 1202 Spanish children (M = 10.09, SD = 1.31, 51% girls), considering its factorial invariance across sex and age and possible differences as a function of these variables. Second, to identify aggression profiles based on the AQ-SF and, finally, to analyze possible differences in school anxiety based on these profiles. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the four-dimensional structure of the AQ-SF scores. Factorial invariance analysis of this model across sex and age confirmed that the model maintains the same structure in boys and girls and different age groups. Latent mean analysis identified significant sex and age differences. Five aggression profiles (High, Moderate High, High Physical, Moderate Low, and Low) were identified using latent profile analysis, and differential functioning of those profiles was found across the dimensions of school anxiety. Results show the adequacy of the AQ-SF scores in Spanish child population and provide relevant data to plan psychoeducational interventions.

Changes in patterns of early mother-child interaction: a longitudinal study of the first 18 months of life
(Elsevier, 2023-08-20) Perea Velasco, Laura Patricia; Martínez Fuentes, María Teresa; Pérez López, Julio; Psicología Evolutiva y de la Educación; Facultades de la UMU::Facultad de Psicología y Logopedia
Objective The main objective of the present longitudinal study is to describe the progression of early adult-child interactions between the first and second years of life. Changes identified in interactions are described, focusing on both the qualitative aspects of maternal responses, as well as maternal response latency to the child's behavior using a microanalytical methodology that collected data on maternal and child behavior in real-time without losing sight of the temporal dimension. Participants This study examined 52 mother-child dyads from intact families that presented no psychological, social, or biological risk factors at 6, 12 and 18 months of age. Instrument CITMI-R (early mother-child interaction coding system, revised edition) was used to assess early mother-infant interactions during free play sessions between mother and child the. Results The results indicate that some components of maternal sensitivity improve as children progress towards the second year of life, detecting an increase in sensitive maternal behavior and a decrease in intrusive behavior in the evolutive observed period; moreover, regarding latency of maternal response, we observed that mothers of older children give more time for their children to explore, which stimulates autonomy. Finally, the implication of these results for intervention directed to optimizing early adult-child interactions are addressed.

Children exposed to intimate partner violence during confinement: characteristics by age and sex
(Frontiers Media, 2022-06-20) Alcántara López, María Vicenta; Castro Sáez, Maravillas; Martínez Pérez, Antonia María; Fernández Fernández, María Visitación; Negrón-Medina, Kaveri; López Soler, Concepción; Psicología Evolutiva y de la Educación; Facultad de Psicología y Logopedia
The COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions imposed to stop its advance have affected the entire population. Children living with difficulties or in vulnerable situations prior to the pandemic might have suffered an even greater impact. This present study examines the psychological impact of quarantine on children and adolescents exposed to intimate partner violence against their mothers. Participants were 185 mothers who reported 269 children, as well as 108 children who self-reported. An emotional and behavioral checklist was administered to both mothers and children throughout confinement. Results show mothers observed changes in their children’s psychological state. Children, in turn, reported an increase in different variables. Mothers reported a higher percentage of overall increase for both general and severe symptoms than their children. Differences were found by sex and age. Future research with similar population groups is necessary to establish the support and intervention children require in similar contexts, as well as to clarify possible causes of differences found by age and sex.

Cognitive and personality differences between adolescents with and without attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder
(Elsevier, 2021-08-06) Herrera-Gutiérrez, Eva; Gómez Amor, Jesús; López Ortuño, Josefa; Navarro Noguera, María; Villanueva Blasco, Víctor J.; Psicología Evolutiva y de la Educación; Facultades de la UMU::Facultad de Educación
Background The relationships between cognitive and personality profile in teenagers with and without ADHD were assessed. Method Two groups of teenagers, one with ADHD (N = 135; mean age = 13.93) and another group without ADHD (N = 199, mean age = 14.29) were evaluated using the K-BIT and 16PF-APQ tests. Results In cognitive variables, the results revealed that the ADHD group returned higher scores in the Matrices subtest and the IQ test. In personality variables, the group with ADHD exhibited higher scores in Tough-Mindedness and lower scores in Self-Control than the group without the disorder. The canonical correlation analysis applied to each group revealed a differing pattern of interrelationships between the cognitive-personality variables in the two groups. In adolescents with ADHD, we observed that higher scores in cognitive variables were associated with a more extroverted personality and less self-control, while in adolescents without ADHD, higher scores in cognitive variables were associated with less tough-mindedness and lower levels of self-control. Conclusions The cognitive and personality variables of adolescents with and without ADHD differ. These results will be useful for establishing a cognitive and personality profile for this section of the population. The educational implications of the study are under discussion.

Cognitive empathy as a moderator in the relation between negative emotionality traits and schoolchildren’s aggressive behaviours
(Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, 2021) Sánchez-Pérez, Noelia; González Salinas, Carmen; Psicología Evolutiva y de la Educación
Given the consequences of aggressive behaviours for children’s development, researchers have tried to ascertain which individual characteristics might act as risk factors. This study examined the potential association of negative emotionality traits and empathy abilities with children’s aggressive behaviours in the classroom. In undertaking this task, main and interaction effects between the dispositional variables were taken into account. The sample was composed of 141 children (M = 8.75; 78 boys). Parents reported on their children’s empathy and negative emotionality, and teachers reported aggressive behaviours exhibited by children at school. The analyses showed a main effect of cognitive empathy on aggressive behaviours, and interaction effects between children’s negative emotionality traits (anger, fear, and sadness), and cognitive empathy. No significant results were found for models including negative reactivity and affective empathy. These findings provide insights that could be helpful for the development of intervention programmes aiming at preventing the negative consequences of aggressive behaviours in childhood.
