- PublicationOpen AccessAdaptación lingüística y cultural del Oxford Cognitive Screen (OCS) en población española(Elsevier, 2020-01-21) García Manzanares, Maria; Sánchez Pérez, Alicia; Alfaro Sáez, Arantxa; Limiñana Gras, Rosa María; Sunyer Catllà, Marta; López Roig, Sofía; Personalidad, Evaluación y Tratamiento PsicológicosIntroduction: Stroke is the sixth leading cause of disability in Spain. Patients may present motor, sensory, or cognitive sequelae, which can be minimised with early treatment. To this end, there is a need for quick-to-administer assessment tools to evaluate deficits in these areas. The Oxford Cognitive Screen (OCS) is a brief test specifically designed to assess cognitive function in patients with stroke. Our aim in this study is to report the linguistic and cultural adaptation of a Spanish-language version of the test (OCS-S). Material and methods: The linguistic validation was conducted with a process of double translation and 10 consensus meetings of the multidisciplinary research team. We also performed 3 pilot studies, with 5 potential users, 23 healthy individuals, and 23 patients with stroke (ischaemic in 61% of cases and haemorrhagic in 39%), respectively; participants were aged between 31 and 88 years. Results: The OCS-S includes the 10 subtests, the coding of responses, and the scoring system from the original version. We modified and extended the instructions for administration in order to ensure the reliability of the content and its application. Five tasks were modified (images, numbers, and sentences) and the praxis subtest was modified to evaluate both hands. The pilot studies confirmed comprehension in the target population, independently of any cognitive problems. Conclusions: The OCS-S is conceptually and linguistically equivalent to the original test, enabling psychometric assessment and application of the test in the Spanish population. The OCS-S may be a useful screening tool for quickly assessing cognitive function after stroke.

- PublicationOpen AccessAssessment of hyperactivity-impulsivity and attention déficit in adolescentes by self-report and its association with psychopatology and academic performanceSaura-Garre, P.; Vicente-Escudero, J. L.; Checa Solueta, S.; Alcantara Lopez, M. V.; Martinez Perez, A. M.; Lopez-Soler, C.; Castro Sáez, Maravillas; Fernández Fernández, María Visitación; Personalidad, Evaluación y Tratamiento PsicológicosThe scientific literature highlights the risk of the appearance of internalizing and externalizing symptoms, together with difficulties in the academic area, linked to diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This is normally assessed by teachers and primary caregivers, disregarding the self-perception of the adolescents themselves, which limits detection of this disorder at an evolutionary stage. Our aim was to analyze the psychometric properties of a self-report for ADHD in adolescence and its relationship with psychopathology and academic performance. This study assessed an incidental sample of 267 students from secondary schools in the Region of Murcia, Spain, using the EDAH questionnaire adapted for self-report, in order to analyze its psychometric properties in assessing ADHD. The Youth Self-Report (YSR) and the Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS) were also used to determine their association with psychopathological, self-control and academic performance variables. An ADHD prevalence of between 3.7 and 13.1% was observed depending on the established cut-off point. The adapted EDAH showed adequate reliability indices (α = 0.818; ω = 0.817) and explained a high variance percentage (50.655%). Adolescents with anxiety/depression difficulties, dissocial behavior, aggressiveness, and poor performance in mathematics showed a higher amount of ADHD symptoms. Moreover, selfcontrol, dissocial behavior, age, and performance in Social Sciences acted as predictors of the disorder. The good psychometric properties of this questionnaire and its adequate correspondence with other variables of interest suggest it is an appropriate self-report instrument to assess ADHD in adolescence.
- PublicationOpen AccessCognitive flexibility and response inhibition in patients with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder(Elsevier, 2020) Rosa-Alcázar, Angel; Olivares-Olivares, Pablo; Martínez-Esparza, Inma; Parada-Navas, Jose Luis; Rosa-Alcázar, Ana Isabel; Olivares-Rodríguez, José; Personalidad, Evaluación y Tratamiento PsicológicosBackground/Objective: The main aim of this study was to analyze differences in inhibition and cognitive flexibility, taking into account some variables that may influence results (non verbal reasoning, depression, anxiety, intolerance of uncertainty, comorbidity, medication consump- tion). Method: The participants were 95 adults aged 17-61 years old (M = 33.48, SD = 11.13), primary (most severe) Generalized Anxiety Disorder or Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and a healthy control group. Neuropsychological neasures were completed using computerized Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, Stroop Color Word Test and Go/NoGo Task. Results: Clinical groups presented worse results in cognitive flexibility to the control group. The obsessive-compulsive group showed worse scores in flexibility than the generalized anxiety group, once non-verbal reasoning and tolerance to uncertainty were controlled. Comorbidity and medication use did not affect results in the obsessive compulsive group but did however influence the generalized anxiety group. Conclusions: Cognitive flexibility could be included treatment in the treatment of obsessive- compulsive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder.
- PublicationOpen AccessCognitive and affective dimensions involved in mental health of infertile couples.(Wiley, 2023-12-30) Limiñana Gras, Rosa María; Morcillo Pérez, M. Eugenia; Picazo González, Ana; Everaert, Nathalie; Personalidad, Evaluación y Tratamiento PsicológicosObjective: The main goal is to analyze the relationships among some of the cognitive and affective processes involved in stress coping, cognitive dimensions of personality, and mental health of men and women with reproductive dysfunctions or infertility.
- PublicationOpen AccessCognitive deficits in fibromyalgia syndrome are associated with pain responses to low intensity pressure stimulation(Public Library of Science, 2018-08-01) Galvez-Sánchez, Carmen María; Muñoz Ladrón de Guevara, Cristina; Montoro, Casandra; Fernández-Serrano, María José; Duschek, Stefan; Reyes del Paso, Gustavo; Personalidad, Evaluación y Tratamiento PsicológicosBackground: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain and diffuse tenderness, accompanied by complaints including morning stiffness, fatigue, insomnia and affective symptoms. In addition, affected patients frequently experience cognitive impairments such as concentration difficulties, forgetfulness or problems in planning and decision-making. These deficits are commonly ascribed to interference between nociceptive and cognitive processing. Method: The present study investigated the association of cognitive performance with (a) pain responses to low intensity pressure stimulation (0.45-2.25 kg/cm2), (b) responses to stronger (above-threshold) stimulation (2.70 kg/cm2), and (c) pain threshold and tolerance in 42 women with FMS. Tests of attention, memory, processing speed, and executive functions were applied. Results: While no significant correlations were seen for pain threshold and pain tolerance, inverse associations arose between pain intensity ratings during pressure stimulation and performance in all evaluated cognitive domains. The magnitude of the correlations increased with decreasing stimulus intensity. Conclusions: It may be concluded that pain experience during somatosensory stimulation of low intensity is more closely related to attention, memory and executive functions in FMS than the traditional measures of pain threshold and pain tolerance. Considering that pain responses to low intensity stimulation reflect the hyperalgesia and allodynia phenomena characterizing FMS, it may be hypothesized that central nervous pain sensitization is involved in cognitive impairments in the disorder.
- PublicationOpen AccessCognitive impairment in fibromyalgia syndrome: Associations with positive and negative affect, alexithymia, pain catastrophizing and self-esteem(Frontiers Media, 2018-03-22) Galvez-Sánchez, Carmen María; Reyes del Paso, Gustavo A.; Duschek, Stefan; Personalidad, Evaluación y Tratamiento PsicológicosFibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain accompanied by symptoms like depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance and fatigue. In addition, affected patients frequently report cognitive disruption such as forgetfulness, concentration difficulties or mental slowness. Though cognitive deficits in FMS have been confirmed in various studies, not much is known about the mechanisms involved in their origin. This study aimed to investigate the contribution of affect-related variables to cognitive impairments in FMS. For this purpose, 67 female FMS patients and 32 healthy control subjects completed a battery of cognitive tests measuring processing speed, attention, visuospatial and verbal memory, cognitive flexibility and planning abilities. In addition, participants completed self-report questionnaires pertaining to positive and negative affect, alexithymia, pain catastrophizing and self-esteem. Clinical characteristics including pain severity, symptoms of depression and anxiety, insomnia and fatigue were also assessed. FMS patients showed markedly poorer performance than healthy controls in all of the cognitive domains assessed, in addition to greater levels of depression, anxiety, negative affect, alexithymia and pain catastrophizing, and lower self-esteem and positive affect. In exploratory correlation analysis in the FMS sample, lower cognitive performance was associated with higher pain severity, depression, anxiety, negative affect, alexithymia and pain catastrophizing, as well as lower self-esteem and positive affect. However, in regression analyses, pain, self-esteem, alexithymia, and pain catastrophizing explained the largest portion of the variance in performance. While interference effects of clinical pain in cognition have been previously described, the present findings suggest that affective factors also substantially contribute to the genesis of cognitive impairments. They support the notion that affective disturbances form a crucial aspect of FMS pathology, whereas strategies aiming to improve emotional regulation may be a beneficial element of psychological therapy in the management of FMS.
- PublicationOpen AccessCognitive-Behavioral Therapy and Anxiety and Depression Level in Pediatric Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis(Colegio Oficial de Psicólogos del Principado de Asturias, 2022) Rosa-Alcázar, Angel; Sánchez-Meca, Julio; Rubio-Aparicio, Maria; Bernal-Ruiz, Cristina; Rosa-Alcázar, Ana Isabel; Personalidad, Evaluación y Tratamiento PsicológicosBackground: Although some meta-analyses have identified potential moderators associated with treatment outcomes for pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), there is as yet no consensus regarding the influence of anxiety and depression symptoms on the recovery from pediatric OCD. A meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the effects of depression and anxiety symptoms and their comorbidities on the efficacy of CBT in pediatric OCD, as well as other potential moderators that may be associated with outcomes. Method: An exhaustive literature search from 1983 to March 2021 located 22 published articles that applied cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to pediatric OCD, producing a total of 26 treatment groups. Some of the moderator variables analyzed included age, gender, comorbidity baseline in anxiety, depression and obsession, and methodological quality. Results: Results showed that the psychological treatment of OCD achieves clinically significant effectiveness, both for measures of obsessions and compulsions (d+ = 2.030), and for anxiety (d = 0.613) and depression (d = 0.451). An explanatory model for the CY-BOCS effect sizes + + showed that three moderator variables were statistically related: the mean of the CY-BOCS (Children’s Yale Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale) in pretest, the effect size for anxiety, and the mean age of the sample. Conclusions: CBT reduced obsessive-compulsive symptoms and, to a lesser extent, anxiety and depression symptoms. Since anxiety symptoms are reduced with the same therapy, resources would be saved compared to other treatments.
- PublicationOpen AccessCompetitive psychological disposition and perception of performance in young female soccer players(Frontiers Media, 2019-05-22) Olmedilla Zafra, Aurelio; Ruíz Barquín, Roberto; Ponseti, Francisco Javier; García Mas, Alexandre; Robles Palazón, Francisco Javier; Personalidad, Evaluación y Tratamiento PsicológicosThe athletes’ psychological disposition is a factor that is increasingly considered by researchers as a key to sports performance, even as a mediator between the physical, technical and tactical abilities of the athlete and their competitive performance, thus acquiring great relevance in training and in sports performance. The purpose of this study is to analyze the psychological characteristics of young soccer players and their relation to their performance perception, made both by the player herself and by their coaches. The sample is composed of 108 women (M age = 15.53, SD age = 1.05), with ages between 13 and 17 years (13 years, n = 1, 14 years, n = 18, 15 years, n = 36, 16 years, n = 29, 17 years, n = 24), and with a sport practice experience of 7.27 years on average (SD = 2.64). For to address this aim, we used the Psychological Characteristics related to the Sport Performance Questionnaire (CPRD) and the Psychological Skills Inventory for Sports (PSIS). In addition, regarding the evaluation of performance perception, an ad hoc short questionnaire was created, composed by one question addressed to the player and one directed to the coach. The results indicate that the group of players of the under-16 category obtained higher scores in all the psychological dimensions than the U-18 players, showing significant differences in Team Cohesion (p < 0.048). Regarding the degree of congruence between the player’s psychological features, and the player’s and coach’s performance perceptions, the results show statistically significant and negative correlations between the Team Cohesion factor and the athlete’s own outcome perception for the match #1 (rxy = 0.479; p < 0.001), and match #2 (rxy = 0.402; p < 0.01). The results of this study may contribute to establish the differences between different constellations of psychological characteristics according to the categories of competition and their relationship with the perception of performance. This knowledge can be used by sports professionals: coaches, psychologists, physical educators, etc., in order to help athletes to reach their maximum performance.
- PublicationOpen AccessCoping strategies in obsessive-compulsive patients during Covid-19 lockdown(Elsevier, 2021) Rosa-Alcázar, Angel; Garcia-Hernández, M. Dolores; Parada-Navas, José Luis; Olivares-Olivares, Pablo; Martínez-Murillo, Sergio; Rosa-Alcázar, Ana Isabel; Personalidad, Evaluación y Tratamiento PsicológicosBackground/Objective: The main aim of this study was to compare coping strategies in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients and a healthy control group during COVID-19 lockdown and to analyze the relationship with some variables which may influence results (depression, anxiety, comorbidity, subtype of obsession-compulsion). Method: There were 237 participants, 122 OCD and 115 healthy controls, aged 17-61 years old (M = 33.48, SD = 11.13). Results: Groups showed differences in the use of some adaptive strategies (positive reinterpre- tation, acceptance, humor) and maladaptive (denial, self-blame). Within obsessive-compulsive group, comorbidity affected the greater use of inappropriate strategies (denial, substance abuse and self-blame) while type of obsession-compulsion did not influence use. Anxiety and depres- sion levels were related to the use of less adaptive strategies. Conclusions: These findings strengthen the need for training in the use of effective and adaptive coping strategies, making it necessary to improve clinical follow-up of these patients. It is relevant to be in contact with healthcare professionals, review medication and observe the anxiety and depression levels.
- PublicationRestrictedDepression and trait-anxiety mediate the influence of clinical pain on health-related quality of life in fibromyalgia(Elsevier, 2020-03-15) Galvez-Sánchez, Carmen María; Montoro, Casandra; Duschek, Stefan; Reyes del Paso, Gustavo A.; Personalidad, Evaluación y Tratamiento PsicológicosBackground: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic pain condition associated with a substantial decrease in health-related quality of life (HRQoL). This study investigated the relationships of HRQoL with clinical parameters of FMS (pain, insomnia and fatigue) and affective variables (depression and anxiety). Methods: Women with FMS (n=145) and healthy women (n=94) completed the Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) to evaluate HRQoL, and self-report questionnaires pertaining to clinical pain, symptoms of anxiety and depression, fatigue and insomnia. Patterns of associations were assessed by correlation, multiple linear regression, and mediation analyses. Results: FMS patients showed lower scores on all SF-36 scales than healthy individuals. Clinical and emotional factors were inversely associated with SF-36 scores. Although depression was the strongest predictor of global HRQoL (explaining 36% of its variance), clinical pain and fatigue were the main predictors of physical components of HRQoL; depression and trait-anxiety were the main predictors of mental HRQoL components. Results of mediation analysis showed that depression, trait-anxiety and fatigue mediated the effect of clinical pain on HRQoL. Additionally, depression, trait-anxiety and fatigue mutually influenced each other, increasing their negative effects on the different areas of HRQoL. Conclusions: Our results suggest that FMS pain and related functional disability may increase depression and anxiety, in turn aggravating the primary symptoms of FMS and indirectly increasing the negative influence of pain on HRQoL. These results showed the need to evaluate and treat negative affective states in FMS.
- PublicationOpen AccessDevelopment and exploration of psychometric properties of the family adjustment questionnaire for admitting an older adult to a nursing home (CAFIAR)(MDPI, 2020-10-19) Riquelme Marín, Antonio; Martín Carbonell, Marta; Ortigosa Quiles, Juan Manuel; Méndez Mateo, Inmaculada; Personalidad, Evaluación y Tratamiento Psicológicos; Facultades de la UMU::Facultad de Psicología y LogopediaBackground: Admitting an older adult to a nursing home involves significant adjustment efforts by the family. Our goal was to prepare an assessment instrument for this, given that there was none to date. Method: Participants—134 relatives from di erent nursing homes in the region of Murcia. Instruments—structured interview for socio-demographic information, satisfaction with the nursing home, well-being and health self- ssessment, Radlo ’s Depression Questionnaire (CES-D), and the first version of CAFIAR. Results: A 15-item instrument with three factors was obtained: Factor 1 (Unease due to admitting an older adult to a nursing home), Factor 2 (Relief), and Factor 3 (Nostalgia and concern for the older adult), in addition to a general adjustment index, with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.74. The general adjustment index and the subscales that demonstrate poor adjustment were significantly correlated with depression and a worse health self-assessment, while the Relief subscale, which indicates better adjustment, was significantly correlated with well-being and a positive health self-assessment. Conclusions: The family adjustment in admitting an older adult to a nursing home questionnaire (CAFIAR) has adequate psychometric properties to assess family adaptation in admitting an older adult to an institution.
- PublicationOpen AccessDifferences in psychological coping with illness during the treatment and survivorship phases in adolescents according to age and sex(MDPI, 2024-12-06) Sáez-Rodríguez, Diego-José; Ortigosa Quiles, Juan Manuel; Riquelme Marín, Antonio; Suriá-Martínez, Raquel; Chico-Sánchez, Pablo; Personalidad, Evaluación y Tratamiento Psicológicos; Facultad de Psicología y LogopediaIntroduction: Despite the importance of addressing different stages of cancer, there is a lack of data on how these stages relate to coping strategies. This study aims to analyze coping strategies among adolescents with cancer by comparing two distinct time points, the treatment phase and the post-treatment phase, with a particular focus on age and gender. Methodology: A total of 201 cancer patients aged 12 to 17 years from Alicante, Valencia, and Madrid participated in the study. They completed a Demographic and Clinical Data Form questionnaire capturing age, gender, and illness phase, along with the ACS to assess coping strategies. Results: During the treatment phase, strategies such as “worrying”, “stress reduction”, “ignoring the problem”, and “self-blame” were used more frequently than during the follow-up phase, revealing notable changes in emotional management between the two stages. Gender differences were observed in the first three strategies. Conclusions: The coping strategies of adolescents with cancer vary significantly between the treatment and follow-up phases, with greater use of certain strategies during treatment and a decline in their use post-treatment. These findings highlight the evolving emotional demands of each stage and emphasize the need for targeted interventions that address the specific coping needs unique to each phase. Such targeted interventions in clinical settings could support emotional management by adapting strategies to the distinct challenges faced by adolescents during treatment and post-treatment phases.
- PublicationOpen AccessDoes Youth Soccer Players’ Group Cooperation Improve when Pitch, Goal, and Team Size Are Reduced?(2021) García Angulo, Antonio; García Mas, Alexandre; Palao, José Manuel; Ortega Toro, Enrique; Giménez Egido, José María; Olmedilla Zafra, Aurelio; Personalidad, Evaluación y Tratamiento Psicológicos; Actividad Física y DeporteThe aim of this study was to analyse the effects of the modification of the pitch size, goal size, and the number of players per team on the level of cooperation in youth soccer players (U-12). A quasi-experimental design was implemented to measure the effects of the changes in the number of players per team (8-a-side vs. 5-a-side), goal size (6 x 2 m vs. 3 x 2 m), and field size (58 x 38 m vs. 38 x 20 m) on the cooperation. Four soccer teams under-12 (n = 48 players) participated in three tournaments (standard rules; proposed rules; standard rules). The five variables of cooperation were measured using the “Sports Cooperation Questionnaire”: conditional cooperation, cooperation with the coach, disposition of unconditional cooperation, situational cooperation with teammates, and situational cooperation outside the field of play. Players presented the same level of cooperation in conditional cooperation, situational cooperation with teammates, and situational cooperation outside the field of play with both types of rules. The modification of rules involved a reduction of the cooperation with the coach and a disposition of unconditional cooperation. The causes of the reduction may be related to players’ adaptation to new tactical dispositions and game situations. Future studies are needed of player’s cooperation and different competition rules in youth sports.
- PublicationRestrictedDyadic and emotional adjustment in infertile couples(Wiley, National Council on Family Relations, 2023-01-25) García-Quintans, Lorena; Limiñana Gras, Rosa María; Patró Hernández, Rosa; Sánchez-López, M. Pilar; Personalidad, Evaluación y Tratamiento PsicológicosObjective: This research evaluated dyadic adjustment and analyzed its contribution to emotional health and interpersonal resources in Spanish couples with reproductive problems undergoing assisted reproduction treatment. Background: Many studies described the psychological challenges of infertile couples experiencing infertility. Social support, particularly in their relationship, protected each couple member's health and quality of life. Method: Overall, 174 infertile heterosexual couples, selected from several Spanish reference hospitals, completed questionnaires regarding personal and clinical data, emotional health, adaptive resources, and dyadic adjustment. Results: Both partners in couples presenting with infertility showed less emotional maladjustment and more dyadic adjustment than the normative values. Women in couples presenting with infertility reported greater emotional maladjustment and interpersonal resources and fewer personal resources than men. For women, educational level, age, affective expression, and dyadic consensus seem to act as protective factors, predicting less emotional maladjustment and more adaptive resources. For men, the couple's relationship duration, affective expression, dyadic cohesion, and dyadic satisfaction contributed to reduced emotional maladjustment and accounted for greater adaptive resources. Conclusion: Greater dyadic adjustment appears to protect the emotional health of women and men seeking infertility treatment. Implications: Support programs targeting dyadic adjustment may be helpful to couples undergoing fertility treatment.
