A competence-based test to assess historical thinking in secondary education: design, application, and validation
(HERMES, University of Newcastle, 2021-05-24) Domínguez Castillo, Jesús; Arias Ferrer, Laura; Sánchez Ibáñez, Raquel; Egea Vivancos, Alejandro; García Crespo, Francisco Javier; Miralles Martínez, Pedro; Didáctica de las Ciencias Matemáticas y Sociales
This paper presents the theoretical framework, application and final outcomes of a pilot test designed as a possible model for assessing students' historical thinking in Secondary Education. It is based both on widely accepted historical thinking concepts and on the assessment framework developed by PISA. The test tries to assess what could be named as the three major competences in history: "explain historically", "use of sources as historical evidence" and "understanding the features of historical knowledge". It includes several stimuli (texts, images...) and a total of 39 items. The field trial of the test was applied to a convenience sample of 893 10 th and 11th grade students, aged 16 to 18 years. Their answers were analysed statistically according to the item Response theory (IRT), and the results uphold the validity and reliability of the test instrument. The IRT analysis also enablesus to take a first step towards defining level of achievement and progress for the learning and acquisition of those competences. One implication of note of this research is the possible adoption of this model for assessing history, based both on applied content knowledge and historical thinking concepts and skills. Such a model of assessment would also stimulate more active, problem-based and motivating teaching approaches approaches.

A review of literature on history education: An analysis of the conceptual, intellectual and social structure of a knowledge domain
(2022-04-25) Gómez-Carrasco, Cosme Jesús; Rodríguez-Medina, Jairo; López-Facal, Ramón; Monteagudo-Fernández, José; Didáctica de las Ciencias Matemáticas y Sociales
In recent decades, Historical Thinking and Historical Consciousness have been two fundamental axes of research in history education. The first approach combines the use of historical sources and the work of the historian. The second includes the social function of history, identity, memory and civic and moral education. These two approaches attempt to provide students with the necessary intellectual tools for analysing the past and relating it to an understanding of problems in the present time. This article reviews the development and shaping of the knowledge domain of history education between 2000 and 2019 in the WoS (Web of Science). To this end, several techniques and tools were used, including R-package Bibliometrix and VOSviewer. Our analysis identifies five clusters of topics underpinning history education as a specific field of knowledge. This review highlights the fact that research topics associated with Historical Thinking and Historical Consciousness have gradually acquired a more central role to the detriment of History Textbooks or topics generally related to History. Finally, we describe how the termHistory Educationfunctions as a marker for this knowledge domain.

Active teachers’ perceptions on the most suitable resources for teaching history
(Springer Nature, 2021-03-04) Guerrero Romera, Catalina; Sánchez Ibáñez, Raquel; Escribano Miralles, Ainoa; Vivas Moreno, Verónica; Didáctica de las Ciencias Matemáticas y Sociales
The objective of this article is to analyze teachers’ assessment of various resources used to teach history. The research methodology is of a quantitative nature with a non-experimental design using a questionnaire with a Likert scale. The non-probabilistic sample comprises 332 history teachers in Primary and Secondary Education in Spain. The analyses carried out are descriptive and inferential. The results indicate that the surveyed teachers value better the resources that imply a greater involvement of the students in the teaching of history and therefore more active methodologies. Specifically, the most valued resources were heritage, artistic productions and museums and, the least valued, video games, textbooks, and applications of historical content for mobile devices and tablets. The study concludes that heritage is a growing educational resource among teachers and shows that teachers are moving away from their perception of resources, which involve a more traditional methodology of teaching history.

Active teaching methods in history education: Inquiry strategies
(Peter Lang, 2023) Monteagudo Fernández, José; Chaparro Sainz, Álvaro; Gómez Carrasco, Cosme Jesús; Didáctica de las Ciencias Matemáticas y Sociales
This chapter1 focuses on the capacity of active learning methods to improve teaching and learning processes in history. In traditional education, the subject of history was originally conceived as a means of legitimating the nation-state and did not have an exclusively instructive purpose. However, historical science does not produce descriptive knowledge to be learned by heart, but rather interpretations which are prone to reinterpretation depending on the sources and the dominant trends. For this reason, an epistemological approach to the subject of history should be based on its critical and analytical function in terms of social reality. The implementation of active learning methods leads students to develop skills of observation, analysis, interpretation, comprehension and expression and helps them to exercise their memories and critical thinking skills. This chapter examines the main active learning methods based on inquiry.

Affectivity concerning the commission of errors in mathematics in trainee teachers studying double degrees
(Nova Science Publishers, 2024-06-24) Jaime Garcia-Mointalban; García Manrubia, María Belén; Méndez Mateo, Inmaculada; Didáctica de las Ciencias Matemáticas y Sociales; Facultad de Educación
The commission of errors is present in the learning processes of university students who aspire to become Primary Education and Early Childhood Education teachers. These errors can have detrimental effects on their learning experiences, potentially influencing their future professional development. This issue is especially relevant in the subject of mathematics, where the emotional component plays a relevant role in the attitudes towards mathematics of these students. This study involved 85 participants who were administered the Ibarra-González and Eccius-Wellman instruments to measure affectivity in relation to making errors in mathematics. This instrument consists of 32 items, each assessed according to a Likert-type scale (1-5). The participants belonged to the Double Degree in Primary Education and Early Childhood Education (39 participants, 52.4%) and the Double Degree in Primary Education, with mention in Physical Education and Physical Activity and Sports Sciences- CAFD- (43 participants, 47.6%). The results revealed significant differences among the students of these two double degree programs in terms of the following factors: "misconception of the usefulness of errors," "favorable behaviors towards errors as a learning tool," and "negative emotions and affections for making errors". Therefore, the need arises to study how the nature of the double degree they are studying affects them and check the influence of Early Childhood Education skills on their training.

Aging and trace elements in human coronal tooth dentine
(Nature Research, 2020-06-19) Fernández-Escudero, Ana C.; Prieto-Bonete, Gemma; López-Nicolás, Manuel; Maurandi-López, Antonio; Legaz Pérez, Isabel; Pérez Cárceles, María Dolores; Didáctica de las Ciencias Matemáticas y Sociales
Teeth are a fundamental tool in forensic odontology for identification in a legal context of those individuals who cannot be identified visually or by other means. Dentine presents physiological exchanges of in trace elements after a period of mineralization and several factors can affect its concentration. The aim of this study was to investigate the concentration of 25 trace elements in the coronal dentine according to sex and type of tooth to determine their relationship with age. A total of 25 trace elements were analyzed in 150 human coronal dentine. Teeth were classified into three age groups, sex and tooth type. The trace elements were grouped as potentially toxic or essential. Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry and Atomic Emission Spectroscopy were used. The toxic and essential elements were detected in the following order of concentration: Al > Pb > Sn > Li > As > Cd and Ca > P > Mg > Na > S > K > Sr > Zn > Ba > Fe > B > Ti > Mn > Cr > Ni > Cu > Co > Se > V. Our findings show an increase in the concentration of toxic (Pb, Li and Sn) and essential (B, Ba, K, Sr, S and Mg) elements in coronal dentin related to the age of the teeth, regardless of sex. The concentrations of Pb and K in dentin of molars and premolars are the elements that best relate their variations with age. In view of our results, the analysis of these trace elements in dentin in combination with other types of techniques could be established as an element to consider in age dating studies in different forensic situations.

(Editum.

Analysis of Cognitive Skills in History Textbook (Spain-England-Portugal)
(Frontiers Media, 2020-11-30) Gómez, Cosme J.; Solé, Glória; Miralles, Pedro; Sánchez, Raquel; Didáctica de las Ciencias Matemáticas y Sociales
The main objective of this article is to analyze the cognitive level of the activities in History textbooks in Spain, England, and Portugal in the transition stage from Primary to Secondary Education (11–13 years), according to the country of origin, typology, and the concepts and disciplinary contents included. The design of this research is quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional. The non-probabilistic sample consists of 6,561 activities contained in 27 school textbooks from Spain, England, and Portugal. Descriptive and contrast analyses have been carried out using parametric tests. The results indicate that textbooks from Spain and Portugal mainly include activities situated between a basic and intermediate cognitive level while in England, the cognitive level of activities is medium or high. The ANOVA and Tukey B tests show significant differences between the cognitive level required in the activities and the typology of exercises, the concepts, and historical contents worked on. The activities with higher cognitive level correspond to those of creation and essays, the exercises that work on empathy and historical relevance, and that contain activities of social and economic history. In contrast, the activities with the lowest cognitive level are short questions and objective tests, those that work on first-order concepts (data and concrete facts), and those on the History of Art. The conclusion is that there is a need for a balanced presence of first-order content and historical thinking skills, the application in the classroom of a more active student-centered methodology, and the teachers’ conception of history teaching that prioritizes historical skills.

Approaches to History teaching according to a structural equation model
(Frontiers Media, 2022-01-25) Guerrero Romera, Catalina; Sánchez Ibáñez, Raquel; Miralles Martínez, Pedro; Didáctica de las Ciencias Matemáticas y Sociales; Facultades de la UMU::Facultad de Educación
Approaches to the teaching and learning of history imply a series of changes and improvements which are adapted to the new epistemological and disciplinary contexts. This calls for a series of transformations in teaching approaches and methodological strategies in order to bring them more into line with the current model of history education. The purpose of this article is to analyse the validity of a questionnaire designed to identify the perceptions of in-service teachers regarding the teaching approaches they believe to be most appropriate for teaching history in primary and secondary/baccalaureate education in Spain. The research methodology employed was quantitative with a nonexperimental design based on a Likert-type questionnaire. The sample is non-probabilistic and consists of 332 active teachers who teach history in primary and secondary/baccalaureate education in Spain. For the analysis of the data, a structural equation model was used based on exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. The results indicate that the teachers surveyed identify three teaching approaches in accordance with the theoretical approach underlying the research. Specifically, a traditional approach based on the memorisation of content; an intermediate model in which there is interaction between teachers and students, through strategies such as discussion, and a third focused on students and the development of historical and critical thinking. These results have important implications for the initial and on-going training of teachers, especially in terms of content.
